About this restaurant

  • Lively
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Hot spot
Soothr, properly pronounced “Sood” is the Thai word meaning “Recipe”. This East Village establishment is the vision of close friends who grew up in different regions of Thailand, hoping to share their experiences and recipes with the rest of the world. Raised in distinctive regional cities, each individual brings their own unique relationship with Thai cuisine, with a specific focus on the generational family recipes that have shaped their childhood and time growing up in Thailand. With a specialty in family noodle recipes from throughout Thailand, Soothr offers a culinary experience that is geared towards the comfort and warmth of dining at home. These traditional recipes have brought great comfort and a sense of home for generations, and Soothr at its core is an invitation to sit at the table and enjoy a classic, Thai family meal.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Noodles are the star at this Thai East Village gem that got raves from Eater and the New York Times after it opened in 2020. You'll find them in a host of regional dishes like the spicy ba mii pu (dry crab noodles) and chicken khao soi. Pair them with equally exciting cocktails like the tequila and tamarind syrup-based Pay-Thai in a neon-lit space that'll make you feel you're at one of Bangkok's famed street-food markets.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Soothr offers an "exceptional" Thai dining experience with "amazing" food, particularly the "best crab fried rice" and "delicious" Khao Soi. The ambiance is vibrant and bustling, with "friendly" staff. However, service can feel "rushed," and late reservations might result in time constraints. Despite this, the "flavors and presentation" make it a "must-try" spot.

I used to love Soothr and I was so excited to bring my friends from Oregon here. The food was tasteless, there was hair in one dish and they still charged us for it, the service was horrible and one dish didn’t come out until the rest of us finished eating. I was so disappointed and will not be coming again.

If punctuality were a religion, this place would be the Vatican. They don’t seat you unless your entire party is present—so if your friend is “five minutes away,” just know you’ve got time to age a cheese. Once we were finally seated (after sending out a search party for Karen), the service was so fast I started to wonder if they were trying to beat a record. Our server may have handed me my entrée before I even ordered it. Impressive? Yes. A little suspicious? Also yes. The savory dishes were the real MVPs—full of flavor and probably a little sass. The noodles and rice? Let’s just say they showed up to the party but didn’t really dance. Bonus points: they surprised us with a birthday dessert complete with a candle. Either they were being sweet, or they were trying to distract us from how fast we were eating. Either way, 10/10 would return—next time with the whole squad on time and ready.

Delicious dinner that fully evokes the flavors of Thailand. Everything was exceptional and overall the cost was about where it should be.

Food was great, felt a bit rushed during the entire service. Want to go back and try other things on the menu!

The food was amazing. The service was okay, but I wouldn't classify it as a good place for their service. When we asked for recommendations, the waitress proceeded to call out at least 5 dishes very fast without any description or explanation, to the point that it was hard to understand, so we decided to go with what we had planned initially.

Very good food and service. A bit crammed into a table and the noise level in the back room which was full was a bit too loud for easy conversations.

My wife and I brought another couple to Soothr to celebrate her birthday. I'd had a good experience at Soothr before and was excited to bring my friends. Unfortunately, we had a disappointing experience due to inconsiderate service. Food - I've been to Soothr before and had better dining experiences. The food was solid but not great. The whole fried branzino is a total waste (and way overpriced). Stick to the saucy noodle dishes for a better meal. Service - Soothr gives you 90 minutes from when you are seated to complete your meal. We were seated at 5:15p. We had finished our entrees and ordered a dessert. The birthday girl tried to order a drink at 6:22, and the waiter refused her because it was "too close to the end of our reservation." I explained that it was my her birthday, and we had over 20 minutes left in our reservation. The waiter said he would have to check with management. He came back 5 minutes later and said he could process the drink if she finished it quickly. She was upset and declined. I was surprised and embarrassed by the whole episode. I understand the need to keep to your reservation schedule, but this is not the way. Ambience - we were seated in the front of the restaurant, which does not have good air conditioning. Only the back past the bar does. It was 90 degrees out and my wife is pregnant so this was very uncomfortable.
