Sonoma’s event food selections have been designed to mirror the same high quality and ethos of the restaurant. With choices from house made charcuterie boards, to artisanal cheese boards, from shrimp cocktail to apple and brie crostini, our canapé selection has something to delight all tastes.View Private Dining Details
Perfect for pre-theater at the Folger or Library of Congress spaces. Service a bit spotty at times; waiter grumpy but that was just one night. The food is good and predictable in a good way (not boring). Very accommodating.
Food was good though we had only pizzas and burgers. The staff were friendly without too much interference.
We went for pre theater dinner and everything was served in good time. I'm looking forward to going again.
Went here for my birthday dinner and overall a terrible experience. One person had a bug in their water. When she told the waitress she didn’t even apologize or offer to get new water. Had to walk to the bar to get a new water. Other staff member was rude and made snide remarks to individuals in the party. Food was mediocre at best. Plenty of other choices in Capitol Hill that are much better.
Thanks! Always our favorite pre-theater nosh!
The food and service are always good but we found it very expensive for what we got. I haven't been for a while and it seems like there must have been a price hike so less likely to return.
Everything was great! Perfect spot for a large party 10 ppl for a bday celebration!
We had a great dinner and the service was outstanding.
They gave away my reservation after confirming with me that I would be dining there still.
Ate lunch at off time
Service was great food great
A perfect pre-theater option for us! Nice wines, good food, great service!
Friday night (3/16/18) You had a male server (white, scruffy, plump) who seemed very unhappy serving us. he made snide comments, was sarcastic and insulting and generally impatient. He did not seem to enjoying serving us, which is fine. But I'd say if you're going to be that rude to people (anywhere, not just at a job) excuse yourself, take a personal day, or at least a 5 minute break to regroup. While his attitude made for a rather unpleasant experience we still tipped him 20% and we will be back because we love the food and ambience at Sonoma, rude guy not withstanding ;-)
Beyond disappointing. Service was unfriendly. Our entrees took forever to come. They were cold and did not taste good. We skipped desert!
Very good service and service.
We had a wonderful time. The waiter was able t answer all our questions and made excellent suggestions.
Sonoma is my go-to restaurant for business lunches near the Hill. It's about a five minute walk from the House Office Buildings, and 15 from the Senate Office Buildings. The staff was friendly and unobtrusive, and the speed of service and food was fast (perfect for one hour and under lunches). The food here is always stellar.
Food was great. However you cannot talk due to volume of noise. Too loud for a business lunch.
A large group came in for lunch while we were there, and once they arrived, it was almost too loud to hear others at my same table. Service was good once our order was finally taken, but our server took his time taking our order.
On a rare date night without the baby, we chose Sonoma but were disappointed. The server had no input on what wine to chose stating that they do not like wine themselves (even though this is advertised as a wine bar). The portions were very tiny considering the price and could have been easily recreated at home. We were underwhelmed with the salmon. The ambience was loud and the seating was not cozy or intimate like we hoped for based off online photos. Overall, we wished we had spent $100 differently or somewhere else.
It took 45 minutes at
Lunch before the waiter
Took our order
This was our first experience with Sonoma. We had tickets to the Folger Theatre and got a note from them suggesting Sonoma for a pre-theatre dinner. Since it is just a five minute walk from there to the Folger, we thought this was a good choice. The restaurant followed up with me on the morning of our reservation, just to confirm. We were seated immediately, but the tables in the back are just too close together for any private conversation and they happily moved us to a table in the front window--excellent choice.
Our waiter was very pleasant and attentive until it came time for the bill--we had to track him down.
We ate pretty casual food and my burger was very tasty.
The wine list is quite good and quite expensive, in my opinion.
The ambiance is very pleasant, kind of a "warehouse" chic feel. It is very noisy with all the hard surfaces.
All in all, a very pleasant dinner.
I think my pasta was a little undercooked because it was all stuck together but the flavors were fantastic
The mussels and brussels sprouts were excellent - some of the best I've had. Wine a little pricey - but that seems to be the norm for DC these days. The waitress was excellent. Really enjoyed the food.
Brunch service was slow. Uninspiring menu of mediocre food.
Food was fantastic, service was on point, atmosphere was lovely. My friends were really impressed!
Very very slow kitchen and waitress was quite inattentive. It was a busy Saturday night so I know that presents challenges, but we arrived 6:15 pm and had 8:00 pm theater tickets 3 blocks away. We had to rush through the main course and dessert in order to arrive on time. Should have been plenty of time for a leisurely meal. Also the food was just ok and the some of the portions were very small. The dessert served was not the right one for one diner.
Soup of the Day yesterday was Creamy Tomato Soup - Mmm mmm good! Outstanding
Our waiter was very nice and polite during our dinner service. The service was quick and efficient.
We visited Sonoma during Restaurant Week. The menu for all three courses was very appealing and offered many options. We chose the fried oysters for a starter and ricotta beignets for dessert. Both were excellent. For a second course we had short ribs and pumpkin gnocchi. My husband said the short ribs were the best he had ever eaten. We also opted for a bottle of wine that was very reasonably priced. Service was ideal. The only negative was the noise level; the restaurant was crowded.
It was very conducive to sharing meals and quick in-and-out.
Sonoma is one of the better places I’ve been to in DC that gives outstanding menu options for Restaurant Week. $35 for dinner included a charcuterie plate, gnocchi, and cheesecake. However, a real downer that soured me on the place and made me likely to not return, was the insane wine mark up prices. A $32 bottle sold at the restaurant retails for $9. I understand places profit from alcohol sales, but that is insane price gouging.
I've had season tickets to the Folger theater for many years and have been looking for good places to dine in the area. Proximity to Metro is important, as are food quality and ambiance. I tried Sonoma for the first time recently and am planning to go back very soon. The food and service were both outstanding, and it's closer to the Folger than other places I've tried.
Unfortunately, there is no decent upscale restaurant on Pennsylvania Avenue, Capitol Hill.Sonoma is crowded, noisy and extremely overpriced. The food is good, occasionally better than good, and the service very good, but the ambience is very government staffers, and the prices outrageous for at best good food and very small portions. We had the pre-theater menu—supposedly a bargain—soup, risotto, bottle of wine. No coffee or dessert. With tip, it came to $150.00. Never again!
We enjoyed the pre-theatre menu and found it to be acceptable. The house wine offered with the menu was excellent. The regular menu looked very interesting. We will return. Their cocktails are a little pricey.
Sonoma must have changed its chef from last year--the food this time was delicious! The pre-theater two-course pre-fixe is a great value, and with really moist and tasty halibut, it was a real treat. Others at the table had trout (which earned raves) and pasta with lamb (ditto).
We will be back!
Delicious food. Nice local eatery. Well thought out menu.
Did a stage wine flight and cheese/charcuterie bird before our NYE festivities. Wine was delicious as well as a good selection of goodies to go with cheese and charcuterie. The waitress was very attentive and knew what pairings to suggest and descriptions of the wine.
Fantastic food and service with a nice environment.
See service but delicious food. Definitely going back
Great Service and delicious menu
This place was dead on a Saturday night and now I know why. Appetizers were good, desserts just ok. 6 of us had different main dishes. 4 were WAY overcooked (example: burger requested as "medium" was extremely well done and dry) but 2 of the dishes were quite good.
The worst part though was the waitress. She did not care at all when we complained about the food. She subsequently asked the manager when pressed, and offered us a free round of desserts. However, when the bill came, we were charged for 3 of 4 desserts. I complained again and she said it was going to be just 1 dessert that was free.
When I asked to see the manager, the waitress said that the manager was too busy to see me. The manager finally came out, apologized, comped all the desserts, and gave us a $75 gift certificate to use next time. Maybe I will go back to give them a second chance, but if that waitress is working my table forget it.
Bottom line: There are many great restaurants in DC. Skip this place.
