At Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar, our culinary mission is straightforward - use the best local ingredients as simply as possible. New American Cuisine places an emphasis on seasonal ingredients that are regionally available, and our menu changes frequently to reflect the Mid-Atlantic’s offerings. The first floor, a bustling, “upscale-casual” bistro and wine bar, offers superior moderately-priced cuisine by using the best local, organic, and naturally raised ingredients. The menu bears a southern European influence, and is comprised of four groups: cheese and charcuterie, handmade pasta and pizzas, wood-grilled meats and fish, and organic salads and produce. The second floor features a lounge and reserve wine bar along with a dining room for private events. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be taken by telephone or through OpenTable.

The restaurant is attractive with an interesting menu and very close to the theater we were going to. We ordered gravelax to start which was delicious, but we hadn't even finished it when our entrees were brought. There didn't seem to be any reason to have the courses timed like that (we didn't say we were in rush or had to be anywhere at any time.)
Had a group of 14 for a birthday dinner and girls night out. The restaurant was very accommodating and staff was attentive. Drinks were very good and food was delish. We were in a bit of a hurry to get out on the town (and the restaurant was emptying out) so I didn't get a chance to really enjoy the food/ambience. Everything I tasted was very good. I will be back again to take in the full experience. Overall though, would recommend this place for a nice romantic dinner out or evening with friends.
Great restaurant. They even let us pop in 10 minutes prior to opening since it was so cold outside. It's pricey, but not terrible for a special occasion. Food (burger and paella) was excellent, as was dessert (beignets). Sideways wine flight was good (though pricey for three small pours). I'd stick to just a glass next time.
Go for the flights of wine, reliably delicious small plates like the fried oysters with bacon jam, and the olive oil cake. The salads are joke--vastly overpriced, messily plated, and needing a microscope to find the ingredients listed on the menu. Greens, that you will get. Service varies greatly. I've had some great, attentive servers--but Saturday evening, well, not so much.
We met here for a work place birthday luncheon. Even though we showed up early, we were seated right away. Danielle was our server and she seemed a bit overwhelmed. The place was packed - perhaps they were short-staffed? Unsure, she never said. Took a long time to get our wine and she wasn't overly friendly - until the glass of water spilled all over the table and floor. That seemed to break the spell and made Danielle a bit more human and more personable. We all (oddly) ordered the mushroom burger - which was delicious - as was the CA sauvignon blanc. All in all it was a good meal and we were happy to have chosen Sonoma for our colleague's birthday celebration.
I chose Sonoma because of its proximity to the Folger Theatre where we were going to see a play at 8 pm. We arrived 15 minutes late for a 6:30 pm reservation, and explained to the hostess that we were pressed for time. She said she would let our server know, and we should be able to eat and get to the theatre in time. After we were seated, it took 15 minutes to get our menus. When the server came to the table, she was not prepared to take our orders. We ordered one dish each, a pizza, two pasta dishes, and a mushroom burger with a side order of brussel sprouts, and let our server know our time constraints. We had not received our food by 7:20 pm. We asked our server to check on our order. She said that orders were filled in the ordered submitted, but agreed to check and to bring us the bill with the food. She came back promptly and said that our order would be ready in 5 minutes, and then brought the bill. The food arrived at 7:35 pm, giving us 15 minutes to eat. One pasta order was not very good and our friend only took a few bites. We left the restaurant at 7:50 pm, and made it to the theatre by 8 pm, completely stressed out!
The food at the restaurant was great, but the service was terrible. My friend arrived 15-20 before I did for our reservation and no one asked him if he wanted a drink while he waited. Then it took them 15 minutes between clearing our salad courses before the dinner course came out. I thought an hour and a half would be enough time for a nice meal, but in the end we were rushing to get to our next appointment.
Visiting from the Seattle area, we found Sonoma by chance walking through the neighborhood. We were looking for a gluten free menu and found plenty of options here. Our waiter, Carlos, was fun and interactive. A large wine selection, although coming from the Pacific NW we didn't recognize all of the wines available. We did, however, have a lovely Barbara from Italy. The food presentation was beautiful and each bite exquisite..kudos to the Chef. The only drawback for us was the lack of ambiance.
My husband and I LOVED our experience at Sonoma! It had been on my to-do list for awhile, so we were both really happy we made it there. The food was delicious and so was the bottle of wine we split. We each had the gorgonzola salad to start, then split the delicious gnocchi pesto and seafood paella. Pro tip: definitely order dessert - any of them! Service was also wonderful.

Great service with humor and wit and the best sense of when to approach the table (girlfriends' get-together with lots of talking and laughing). We both tried the rose wine flight and my friend moved on to the bubbly wine flight. All very good wines, well-priced easy drinking and for my experience, paired well with the food selections.
The amuse bouche was savory and warm; I selected the fried oysters, paella, and ricotta beignets. My only disappointment was with the beignets-after undergrad in New Orleans, these weren't even slightly evocative of Cafe du Monde's sublime version and were instead surprisingly heavy and dense balls of fried dough. Also, the shrimp in the paella, while I'm sure imparted far more flavor to the dish as the heads remained on, were nonetheless a frustrating experience to remove from the shell as the dish cooled down. The work was made more intense by the fact that the shells weren't even split down the back to ease the peeling.
Otherwise, a very nice dining experience for an exceptionally reasonable price and had me wondering why I'd let so much time pass in between visits.
Sonoma is often my "go to" place for lunch when I'm on Capitol Hill - very close to the House office buildings. I must say, I often get the chicken pillared on a salad, which I did yesterday, but this time the piece of chicken seemed to be a smaller than usual and also very lackluster. The Caesar salad though was very good.
I was there for lunch, midweek. It's a smallish venue with a few sidewalk tables. I side was energetic. Food above average but my grilled cheese sandwich was only slightly warm when it arrived at my table. The cheese was already cooling off. My friend had a pizza which looked good. Might want to give this place a try for dinner.
