We booked the greenhouse to have a safe and comfortable outdoor dining experience. But we were freezing cold as there was no heat at all despite electricity being hooked up to it. I had paid $50 just have the reservation for 4 people as it clearly states that it is heated. It was only 40 degrees. Terrible. They should not be charging people $50 for a frozen booth to eat in. The food doesn’t even stay warm.
The service was wonderful, shout out to our server Cait. We had reserved the greenhouse and when we arrived there was no light fixture, opening covering, or heating. This was because it had been warmer during the day but it left us fairly dim and chilly during our dinner. They offered to refund for the reservation which was very nice. The only other thing was that we had ordered a steak to be cooked medium and it arrived with all of the other entrees as very well done so we had to send it back and by the time a new steak had arrived everyone else had finished and the person who ordered the steak had to eat alone, which was rather unfortunate. The service is very very good, the food is also fairly good but there was obviously a big problem with pacing in the kitchen, and the ambiance is nice but not what we expected/paid for. I would go again but skip the steak and the greenhouse, not worth the money.
Dinner and drinks were so good.
Incredible experience. Food was outstanding! Get the roasted Brussel sprouts with bacon. Beignets were delicious, not an easy find in Philly. Crab cake Benedict was to die for. Can’t recommend this place enough. Drove from Bucks county and will be returning!
Fabulous time with friend in outside greenhouse! Great food and fantastic service. Can’t wait to come back!
Service was great. The food was hit or miss in my group. My chicken ceasar salad was fine but on the pricey side ($18). Also it was not very clear that they straight up charge you for the greenhouse for 1.5 hours. So I paid $50 for a table on top of the bill. The greenhouse was nice and warm but the door is a curtain which kept flying open from the wind so it got chilly fast. I splurged because I never go out in the pandemic anymore but I certainly could not afford to do this all the time with those prices. Meal for 3 people was $250 after the table reservation and tip. I recommend they make the fee go towards your bill at the very least.
Updated review: Along with writing a review I wrote a message to SOMO about my visit and the hospitality manager, Marissa, and she has been so apologetic and accommodating. I work in marketing with a specialization in food and fitness so I have pretty high standards for food serviced and their management and Marissa reminded me of some good points we should all remember. Restaurants are constantly given updated regulations and opening and closing due to to COVID making it nearly impossible to efficiently run, and we all (especially myself) need to be a little more patient while we go back to the new normal. Although I'm still really upset about my Valentines Day, Marissa offered us an opportunity to come back and give SOMO another chance and we are looking forward to it!
ORIGINAL REVIEW (shortened because of space): We made the difficult decision to splurge and go out to SOMO for Valentines Day. After paying the $50 "greenhouse fee" we were handed the menu and it was very over priced and price was not listed anywhere on line prior to seeing the prefixed menu. We were immediately handed a piece of paper explaining that we only had a 1.5 hour slot to sit in the green house. Our waitress was very rude from the beginning, continued to pop into the greenhouse yelling at us "everything good" and leaving the curtain open which kept it very cold.
The food was very, very small for the price, presentation was poor, the lobster bisque was cold and had hardened, the steak was so chewy more than half of it wasn't even edible, and the worst was the dessert which was mixed up with another order and the wait staff was rude and rushed us out instead of correcting our order. Overall, a sad date night.
Somo is one of our favorite restaurants in the area. Usually an experience at Somo is consistently good in all areas...service, food, ambiance. We went for Valentines dinner, and unfortunately, they apparently had a bad night! It was obvious they overbooked. The wait, with a reservation, was excessive. We were seated about 25 minutes AFTER our reservation time. After being seated...we sat, and sat, and sat...until somebody finally came by to bring water and take our order. Our main course came an hour after we ordered. As for the appetizers that preceded the main...the soup was cold, and the salad was pedestrian. They made a come back with the main courses and dessert. Our server, after initially overlooking us, did her best to provide good service. But if the kitchen is backed up, there was little she could do. In all, a surprisingly disappointing experience.
We went to SOMO for a pre fix Valentine’s Day dinner in the greenhouse. The greenhouse was absolutely perfect and gave privacy and warmth outside. Unfortunately, our food ran very late. The entrees arrived 40 minutes following the appetizers. My chocolate lava cake arrived with a cold solid chocolate center. Food and service was not worth the price of the ambiance.
I wanted to like this place but the food was bland and just ok plus our server was unfriendly and we felt rushed.
The greenhouse provided a safe and warm environment for our experience.
VDay at Somo was bad. We had reservations for an 1 1/2 and was rushed through the whole meal. We were given a greenhouse with no working light when there were others available. They moved us. I called twice and asked if the VDay menu was the only thing available or could we choose from the regular menu, we were told the regular menu would be available. Of course, we get there and it’s only the VDay menu, which we got over, I just wanted to try things from the reg menu. No soup so we got salads and said no anchovies. Salad comes out with them. Crab cakes were no where near jumbo. They were flat and the size of a silver dollar. My husband said something and the runner stated “ yea I’m sorry about that”. There must have been complaints all night and I see them from other reviews. The potatoes were hard and nasty like they were sitting out all day. The dessert was brought out before dinner was even done. The strawberry shortcake was a cookie and even harder than a cookie. I couldn’t even get the spoon through it. Oh and as for a spoon. She brings my husband a spoon and me a plastic utensils set. Like what? And the couple next to us she brings out dessert the same time and they started eating way after us. So they had to pack theirs to go. But anyways she brings them regular spoons as well. So my husband catches her and asks why was I given a plastic set. She acts as if she doesn’t understand and is like “oh you want forks” . No I don’t want to spend $75 pp for a meal and be given plastic utensils. Then I joke the bill will come out within 10 mins , it’s out in less than 5. No ‘anything else’ just the bill with still 30 mins left of our reservation. Then the bill comes out with 20% gratuity applied. I’m okay with tipping and tipping good but not for bad service. And what I am really upset about is that they are supposed to display there is a gratuity upon ordering. Nothing on the menu, or website and this was my second time there so I know I didn’t pay gratuity before.
You are required to pay $50 for the outside Greenhouse regardless of how many people in your party, and it wasn't ready zo we had to stand outside in the freezing cold for 20 minutes. Waitress was terrible and yelled each time she came in. Salad came with the food even though we requested it ahead of time. Food was fine but expensive. Since they are the only ones in Manayunk with fully enclosed eating areas, I guess they can get away with being mediocre.
Servers and hostess need more training. But food is excellent! Recommend brunch in the greenhouse!
Wow- a very cool experience! The greenhouse was cozy and warm! The food and service were exceptional... the bottomless mimosas were well worth it and the food was very tasty! We had a great time and we'll be back!
Arrived on time for my reservation and it took 45 minutes to be seated when I payed extra to reserve a green house. Otherwise food was good. DRINKS were amazing! And my waitress was great. Eating in Greenhouse during the winter was an amazing experience and warm.
Food was excellent. Service was subpar. We would have spent way more money celebrating a birthday if the service had been more efficient. 50 dollars for the green house is not worth it in my opinion.
So warm and cozy. Food was delicious!
We were in the greenhouse and it was wonderful. Grayson, our waiter, provided us with a great dining experience. Made recommendations and helped work around a food allergy. Highly recommend Somo and Grayson!
Our $50 greenhouse was the only one without a curtain and the wind was freezing. We had to rig up our own solution, as the staff weren’t too concerned. Then we were unceremoniously asked to leave when we didn’t order dessert. We had only been there 90 minutes and weren’t even done our drinks. The bar service was very slow, so we should have been given more time. Don’t plan to return.
Great adaptation to Covid restrictions and policies.
Was relatively easy to get a greenhouse reservation compared to other places. Loved dining in the little green house! It was super warm. Food was good and prices are very affordable! We will be back!
The outdoor greenhouse is warm and comfortable with nice decor. The brunch was great. I would recommend it!
The greenhouses will be perfect for a safe date once the weather breaks!
This was a nice and cute place.
Very warm and cozy for outside, nice for private dining worth the extra cost. You are kind of in the street so traffic is close but once you get past that and see that your safe very great time. Fast servers
Tho it was nice experience and the waitress was great I would consider putting up a curtain on the rod above the door space. the heaters were a great touch however on a cold day the outside air took over. I know the pandemic has been horrible for all of us , however for $50 I would think it needs to be a bit more comfortable. the curtain will allow heat to not escape
We got a greenhouse and it was really cold out had to have someone drop off blankets.. definitely did not feel the heat.. food and service was very good though and overall we had a great time.
The greenhouses were great and the service was so nice. So innovative and safe
