Third or fourth time I have taken a group there.
This last time we had a group of 14.
Server Francois was excellent.
Great, homemade Italian Fare !
OssoBucco was absolutely great !
This restaurant is fantastic. They make the best Italian food in the city of San Diego. This is a great date spot for a nice occasion. Food value is high but a little pricey depending on the entree.
The most overpriced Italian food I’ve ever eaten.
The bill was $100 between my girlfriend and I, but the food was not even close to good.
This place tries to be really fancy and authentic but ends up being a really basic Italian restaurant with pretentious plates and servers.
The sphagetti was basically just left in marinara sauce and served, while the ravioli didn’t taste good. The only good thing in this restaurant was their bruschetta
Had high expectations from their drinks due to their “signature cocktails”, but they turned out to be very basic and not mixed well.
There are WAY better Italian restaurants in Little Italy and other parts of SD. Save your money and go somewhere else!
It is a nice cozy place with outside and inside seating. It has a smaller menu but seems like all good selections. Loved the pasta with meat sausage. Nice staff. Great place with very reasonable prices.
We've visited San Diego several times over the past 25 years, and this is the best San Diego restaurant we've been to. It also ranks among the best Italian restaurants in the country. It's clear why the Chef, Accursio Lota, was Readers' Pick for Best Chef in 2017. Consistent with the best Italian cuisine, everything is super fresh, and the chef lets the ingredients shine. He locally sources many ingredients, and you can tell.
We started with two exceptional appetizers. The calamari, pane condito e ammoglio was tremendous: fresh California, grilled to perfection, with complementary mint ammoglio over a delicious bed of endive and arugula. The inalata cesare alla griglia is a work of art. The grilled romaine was nicely charred, and accompanied by an intense, almost foam-like Caesar dressing.
All of the pastas are hand-made. We had a unique, beautifully executed malloreddus agnello e scamorza: Sardinian pasta infused with saffron, accompanied by lamb sausage, oyster mushrooms and scamorza cheese. The spaghettie all puttanesca was flawless. The white bass special was en papillote; slicing open the paper revealed a beautifully flavorful and moist fish with fennel overtones and broccolini.
The pastry chef continued the exceptional level of quality. The chocolate mousse was harmonious and not too sweet. The raspberry tart was luscious, and the millet crust gave a unique crunch.
The wine list features both Italian and California wines, and is fairly deep. We had the terrific 2012 San Felice Campogiovanni Brunello, which opened up superbly with decanting.
The only minor gripes were the need for a bit more salt on some dishes, and the wine list was not posted on the web site.
But when in San Diego, this is a must visit for the discerning foodie.
Always a favorite of ours. The staff is invariably knowledgeable and helpful - food consistently terrific. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
We celebrated a birthday in Solare’s Wine Room. Service and food, the best! Highly recommend Solare as an amazing trip to Italy!
I had asked for some special changes to fit my dietary restrictions and they missed the 1st time but brought it back. Tried to bring out other items to appease but also not allowed on my diet. I know the waitress wrote it down but the cooks messed up. I expected a little discount but instead there was an upcharge for my dietary restrictions which I would have been ok with has it not come out wrong the first time
Enjoyed an Easter breakfast of the pancakes and french toast. Both dishes were very good. Still waiting for my open table points.
The staff is great. They know the menu and are service oriented, without being intrusive. They were very helpful and attentive regarding my wife’s birthday.
My meal was great. I had the paparadell with sausage. Previously I had the osso bucco and enjoyed it as well. Others enjoyed the lasagne. However those who ordered the gnocchi with clams were not as pleased. For one thing, there were too few clams. That being said, we go back and feel confident about having a wonderful experience.
We were celebrating our 55th wedding anniversary and our first time at Solare's.
The dinner was DELICIOUS, the drinks were outstanding and the service was perfect!!
It is now our favorite restaurant, thank you for such a wonderful and fun evening and our waiter was amazing and fun!
Impressed by the service and our server, Justin's, knowledge of the menu. Two sodas, an appetizer, two entrees, and dessert all came to just over $80 which seems expensive, but well worth the entire experience. Definitely recommend this place and I can see why some reviews say Solare is one of the best Italian restaurants in the state!
Superb dining at a neighborhood price. The Eggplant was worth the trip alone and my partner felt the same about the lasagna. First class all the way.
Excellent Italian food and service from this Barillo and Gamberi Rosso award winning restaurant! Great Wine Cellar selections and ambiance! Definitely a 5 star winner!
Great food, beautiful ambiance, lighting and service.
Well, my friend and I went to Solare based on the reviews. In Yelp. We’ve both been to Italy and craved good Italian food. What we got and paid for was two different experiences. We ordered the Charcuterie board and the meat came out but no cheese. Then the salads came out on top of the appetizers. Finally, the entree came out on top of the salads. Essentially, the dinner was delivered all at once.
The meal was meh, not good not bad. It was not the best meal nor was it comparable to a meal from Italy. The service was meh too. The server was nice and hospitable but he did not make the experience as some servers can do. The atmosphere was ok. The evening over all was okay. Overall, I would not make it a point to go to Solare, on the other hand, while if you find yourself near the restaurant go in the food will be good, but not life changing.
Terrific food and service. Would highly recommend. Plan to go there again.
Food is delish. Everything was great until our server disappeared for 20+ min at the end with no explanation besides he had to “handle something.” The owner went around and said hi to every table but ours. Have been a long-time supporter of Solare but will not be returning. Have already informed restaurant via email and FB but no reply. So, if you like good food and poor service-especially being snubbed by management and forgotten at the end, once you’ve spent all yout money, go for it!
Dinner was, as always outstanding. Solare has a great reputation & it is well deserved - Some of the best Italian in the State. There to celebrate my wife's birthday, we decided to try items from the weekly specials menu. Braised beef Cheeks & Octopus Linguini, as well as 2 excellent wines [by the glass] from their extensive wine list. Our server was, as always attentive, but not overbearing as some tend to be
Good place. Would go again but prefer veal osso bucco
Fantastic experience, the food was terrific!
Love Love Love this place. Every time we go, there is something new and tasty on the menu. Their specials really show off great Italian/Sicilian cooking, yet bring together local ingredients. The fish is always fresh, as is the pasta. The pizzas are perfect and authentic. The wine list is huge!! Lots of good selections. Not sure if I like Solare more in the evening, or sitting outside in the afternoon with a bottle of wine and some pizza. OK... I guess I can do both. ;-)
The restaurant is lovely - lots of seeing outside and inside - charming -
Food was good but service was not great - felt rushed in the dining room and ignored in the bar -
Very close to a place we like in Rome. Food is better at Solare. Service is superb.
The food was excellent; flavorful and interesting. The service was attentive but not bothersome. Good noise level so one could converse across the table.
This restaurant was rated as one of the most romantic in the country.......we missed that.....??
Still a nice place and fun to go to
An epicurean delight - upscale Italian food preparations that far exceed the standard fare. We were there on a busy night so the normally vivacious and attentive service waned a little. In addition, a rather boisterous large party interrupted the normal reserved atmosphere.
We were there to celebrate my brother's birthday and he was definitely impressed. As usual, the owner (or in the past - the chef) stopped by to ensure the meals met their high standards. It is that attention-to-detail and genuine concern for the customer that keeps me coming back (that and the extraordinary desserts).
Loved their happy hour menu! Great value and delicious too!
The lamb chops were excellent. All of the desserts were intriguing.
Well, the food here was great. My experience was a bit less than expected. Requested the wine room.... didn’t get it. Celebrating a birthday.... not acknowledged even though it was noted in the reservation. Waited much too long to be seated, or ever see a host or hostess.
Probably would not return.
Knowledgeable and nice waiter
Wide selection of dishes and wines but not overwhelming
Delicious home-made bread and pasta
Elegant settings and candlelight
Very nice restaurant. Food was great. Liked the fact that every thing is cooked fresh. Only issue was the service as a little slow like refilling drinks and checking up on us.
Valentines Date Night. Best restaurant in San Diego. Incredible staff, crazy good virtuoso chef, friendly comfortable atmosphere, wine, cocktails, ...the total package. Get thee to Solare!
Waiter was nowhere to be found when needed, the maître d' who was also waiting on us (bringing the glasses of wine over) stunk of cigarettes, we were not wowed by the food (pasta was over-cooked, as was the pork shank). We planned for a pleasant evening out but the whole experience was over in a flash and suddenly we were home again having spent in excess of $140 for a rather forgettable evening.
Had a wonderful meal, with excellent service and congenial staff.
I went with a group of friends for Happy Hour. Fair warning - only half the dining room does Happy Hour, so if you want it, request it! The small plates are VERY small (think 2 meatballs about the size of a ping pong ball for the Polpette). The food was good though and we had a fun time out on the patio.
We (2 couples) got together to catch up and have a wonderful meal & wine . We were all very happy with our food, the service, and the wine. The osso buco and pappardelle pasta were outstanding.
sixth time in four weeks we have dined here-great food and service - i now feel at home there but I have to return to Chicago. Try it, you will like it.
Not only was the food great but we got to meet the owner-Randy- and had a wonderful conversation with him about cooking classes held at the restaurant every other Saturday and some trips to Mexico that he hosts a few times a year.
