Solare Ristorante Lounge Ratings and Reviews
Lots of potential that unfortunately didn’t deliver on this occasion. The service was ok but food delivery was slow. Waiting staff were ok if not a little erratic at times forgetting cutlery, drinks and bread orders My wife had the fish stew which was very good and I had the Special Raviolini that turned up cold and for $27 was not a good value main course. I would have normally complained but the restaurant seemed short staffed to cope with the number of covers and so saw little point as I tend to just vote with my feet. We were looking forward to our dinner date as there is a lot of hype around Solare but it didn’t meet the price tag that we paid.
Dinner was totally delightful. Tasty food, beautiful ambiance, good service. But we learned something VERY impressive...the chef competed with 14 others recently in Europe and won the title of best pasta chef (in the world!). I tried the traditional lasagna, and it was very good, but we both want to go back to try some more of his pasta. He was also just voted the best chef in San Diego in San Diego Magazine...A hidden gem here.
Another lovely meal. Great menu choices and the dishes we picked were delicious. This is a restaurant that we have visited many times in the past few years and they remain a favorite. Tonight we shared the Fritti Misti, the Eggplant Timbale and a weekly special house made macaroni with a four meat sauce. Excellent!
My borrowed and I came to Solare to celebrate our anniversary. After telling the hostess this, we were congratulated by the waiter, and he brought us a very delicious fruity drink to celebrate. The entire night was very enjoyable, good food, and very friendly service. The only think i would recommend would be some nice music to play while we ate. There could have been music playing while we were there but I don't remember hearing any. Either way, very good service and tasty food. Special thanks to Mark.
Been to Solare several times and am never disappointed. We both had the fish special - sea bass in a tomato sauce, encrusted with pistachios and olives on a bed of smashed potatos and spinach. Everything was perfectly cooked and flavorful. The waiter was professional and helpful. Definitely a great date-night venue.
Long story short, our party of 6 arrived on time but no food showed up at our table, not even bread, for nearly an hour, and only then because I kicked up a big fuss. We were told they were unexpectedly busy but there were many empty tables. They apologized and comped some appetizers, but overall it was a poor experience with Solare Ristorante Lounge. Why bother going out to a restaurant if you have to fight to be served.
Solare was a great Open Table find. It was also further confirmation that a restaurant where the owner is hands-on is usually a great experience...clearly there's care for the patrons, food and experience. The wine list is extensive, the food was excellent as was the service.
Went for my wife's birthday celebration and were treated like royalty. Were seated in the wine cellar and it was a remarkable experience. Surrounded with 2,500 bottles of fine wine, enclosed in a private setting, attended by several knowledgeable staff people. Waiter Joseph was OUTSTANDING in everything from food selection to wine recommendations and was professional in every way. Shanna the manager of the evening was equally as attentive and gracious. Utilized "on line" reservation option and were blown away by their treatment and the food. I would highly recommend Solare of anyone who enjoys good Italian/contemporary cusine, unique wine parings, and outstanding---peraonal and professional service.
We ordered quite a bit of food for 3 of us. We came hungry.
Starters: pear & gorgonzola pizza, arancini (special), and burrata Fragole e balsamico salad
Entree: lasagna with a side of meatballs, spaghetti and meatballs (not on menu -but they serve it), parpadelle al sugo di salsiccia, gnocchi Arrabiata.
Dessert: Gelato/Sorbet Trio: pistachio, strawberry sorbet and lemon sorbet.
Some of the food came out luke-warm (lasagna, side of meatballs, arancini). This was a bit disappointing because the meatballs with the spaghetti came steaming hot. And I like my food to come out hot.
Pizza was really good. A little too blackened for my taste. That burned flavor takes away from the flavor of the dough. Not all the pieces were burned so just ate around it. The arancini not only was it a bit luke warm, but also not too much flavor. We were disappointed since it was a special, but we finished it because we were pleased with the salad and pizza.
The lasagna came with a fondue sauce and wine reduction. Those were both a bit sweet, which I personally didn't like at all. Luckily it was on the side on the plate so I just scraped it away. The fact that the meatballs were cold made them a bit firm and hard to eat. Didn't complain about it because service was otherwise great and food was pretty good. I also tasted the hot meatball and that was excellent so it was just a mistake. Gnocchi, spaghetti and parpadelle were very good. All the pastas were perfect.
Wine: Rose on specials menu. This was also very good.
Customer service was great. People were kind and attentive.
Drinks ordered at the bar may increase in price when moved to your table. Tonic for the Times is $9 at the bar; $10 at the table. Some pasta portions are pretensiously small. I overheard their Sommelier, and he seemed knowledgeable but never came by. Bathrooms are for public use, and can be best described as high school in look and seemed to be tended to in a similar fashion.
Recommended by Italian foodies! Our friends are from Rome and Sicily. They LOVE food and recommended that we try Solare for authentic and delicious food. They were correct. From the house-made focaccia with robust olive oil to the grilled squid with mint pesto to the lamb sausage with fresh house-made pasta to dessert and wine - all were great. Even the cocktails were unique and tasty. We will be back to try many other things.
We were very excited to go to Solare for my girlfriend's birthday based on the Chef winning the Barilla competition and San Diego's Best Chef. We also learned that wine was 1/2 price on Tuesdays after making our reservation.
Seemed like a great list, our wine was okay but underwhelming for the original $60 price tag. I wonder if it just needed longer to open up (even by the end of the 3 courses).
Calamari was very good, and we liked that it had vegetables in it but carrots were an off choice and the sauce was vaguely buffalo-esque. Would have been better with marinara or a lemon cream sauce.
Dinner was two pasta dishes, risotto with black truffles, lobster roe, and scallops and the lasagna.
Lasagna was good but not great, had a sweet fruit compote around the outside which gave it an interesting twist.
The shaved black truffles on the risotto were impressively flavorless (even when eaten by themselves, we were quite disappointed and pointed it out to the server who promptly walked away). The rest of the risotto was great and the scallops were incredible.
Received a free birthday dessert, house-made tiramisu in a small pot (for plants). Very cute presentation and quite tasty. Service was good but ambiance was lacking sitting out front.
Another wonderful dining experience. Solare is superb! From the moment you step up to the hostess station you are treated like you are a most welcome guest. Decided to wait for the rest of our party of 6 at the bar and the cocktail offerings are creative and delicious. Bartender very engaging and friendly...sort of the signature of this fine place. Our table was ready well ahead of our arrival. Our waiter was knowledgeable about all aspects of the menu and all six of us were very happy with our dining choices. I chose to go with the Restaurant Week menu which included 3 apps, entrees and 2 desserts to choose from. The scallops with risotto I chose for my entree was outstanding. The rest of our party too had nothing but good things to say about our Solare experience. Recommend highly!
Still thinking about the risotto with scallops, lobster roe and truffle! Creamy deliciousness! Amazing!
We had a late dinner and did not feel rushed at all! Staff was very attentive and accommodating as usual :) Our server was Alfredo.
Thank you for a wonderful dinner experience!
My friend suggested this restaurant and thought I'd like it. While I generally like Italian food, I generally avoid most Italian restaurants unless they come recommended. I've had too many "great Italian" places that turned out to be mediocre.
Not so Solare Restaurant! His recommendation was accurate! It was outstanding. Very creative, with all locally produced dishes that vary with the availability the ingredients. Solare has a very nice ambience and feels warm and inviting. I'm not going to go into the actual dishes (they change) but the quality of the ingredients and the execution of the dishes are second to none. Overall a wonderful find in San Diego.
