SOL Mexican Cocina - Newport Beach
inlcuding antojitos, street tacos, cocktels de mariscos and main dishes made with fresh seafood, wood grilled meats, local produce and salsas that are all made fresh daily.
The food was fine, nothing to shout about. The area we sat in was so loud we could not even hear the person sitting next to me.
1 star is for first impression and cleanliness as we didn’t even end up eating here.
As soon as we walked in the reception area it had a coat of dust and dirt on the bottom of the front cabinet.
While we walked to our table we noticed dirty chairs and tables still with some dried food residue.
When we sat down I opened my black cloth napkin only to discover big brown curly hair, yuck! That definitely not only killed our appetite but confirmed our fear of clean kitchen just by how the surroundings look like from the moment you enter.
I am baffled on how some places get high ratings, do people not care on how the restaurant is kept clean? The appearance of the front of the house is the best reflection on what the kitchen looks like!
We would definitely not go back and would never recommend to anyone.
Great spot for a date night, birthday, or any other sort of celebration! The flavors are amazing and the food is great. Every time I travel to the area, I have to stop here for dinner.
A great experience and wonderful food.
Great place and amazing food. First time there will be back.
The food here is always good but the server we had was just the worst. He took 20 minutes just to come by our table. Screwed up my friend’s drink order. Lost my friend’s credit card somehow and also messed up the bill. He had no idea what the taco Tuesday menu or pricing was and seemed really overwhelmed.
The menus were filthy. We almost walked out. My silverware was dirty. It was gross. We have eaten there before is only reason we stayed. Neither the waiter or manager seemed to care. Unlikely we will go back.
Had a reservation, and unfortunately because of transportation issues, was 5 min late. Was practically ignored by hostess busy cleaning menus and a walk-in, who arrived after me with a party of 6, was seated fairly quickly and before my party of 4. Had to wait 30 min to be seated. Nice decor, but too loud to clearly hear conversations around 4 person table. Service was ok at best. Food was very good, but there are more than enough Mexican resturants In the area with great food and also have great service to warrant returning here and being treated like a 2nd class citizen.
Was one of my favorite places when i moved here 3 years ago. Went downhill. Make you wait for a table when you have a reservation. Took over a half an hour to get a server to the table. Took way to long to get our drinks and food. Ordered wasn’t all right. Won’t be going back anytime soon.
Went for lunch with my husband to try the new menu items. Our server was unsure what we were talking about. I tried to pull up the email but couldn't. Her manager finally did. The time to get a drink was too long. Waited about 15min to order and get one. The food was excellent.
They had a private party and we showed up and couldn’t get in to our reservation. Ridiculous.
We were turned down due to plumbing issues
Great happy hour
Amaaazing food especially for vegetarians like me ! Lots of veggie options ! Definitely going back soon. ❤️
Fantastic service and delicious food — highly recommend!
Really great food, really slow service. We were a group of 7 and I received my food 10 minutes after everyone else, they forgot my order. We ordered drinks and had to ask twice to get them. We ordered two sides of Guacamole and had to ask three times for some chips! Don't sit on patio, like a sauna.
The music was very loud. Food was great
Sol is a great spot! The food is good and the scenery is awesome, Unfortunately, the service has experienced a downturn in recent months. This place gets busy, so I always make a reservation. The past 2 times I have gone, I have had to wait 30-50 minutes, even with my reservation. I know that the staff has no control over how long guests stay, so I try t be respectful of that. Waiting and being made to feel like a nuisance when all you want to do is give the restraunt all your money so you can enjoy the entire menu, is no fun. If you are looking for a great meal and don't mind engaging with irritated staff and fellow diners, this is the spot for you.
Great service, food was great.
After being seated for our reservation, we watched as the table of 2, who were seated approx. 5 minutes after us, were waited on. After 15 minutes of not having anyone stop by our table, I asked a worker if anyone was assigned to wait on our table. He said he would check, but never returned. So, after close to 30 minutes and no service, we moved to the bar to be served. Our waiter at the bar was excellent, but sadly, the food was average, at best. For having such great reviews, our experience at Sol was very disappointing. Needless to say, we will not be back for overpriced food that is average and spotty service. That's too bad as we were looking forward to trying something new in Newport.
Decent food. Wasn’t impressed with the mushroom chorizo queso, and calamari is not the typical calamari but tacos were AMAZING!!!
Food choices were very good there were several options for vegans as well as vegetarians and meat lovers
Our waiter Rigo was very patient with our questions & attentive.
They have a very nice black beans and salsa dip with their full ships that they serve which is a nice touch on the small condiment items.
It would’ve been nice if they had some pickled items as well as their salsa and bean dip
I have the Seabass which was very good sauce was slightly over sweet
Trumpet mushrooms were cooked well. Not as imaginative as it could have been.
Made a reservation a week in advance and was seated in the corner by the kitchen, but there appeared to be a large wedding party in house so we may have been too late to receive any better options for views.
Very poor service and weak food. Very disappointed. Waiter was arrogant and inattentive.
I love coming to Sol...this time around I felt the service was not upto par. I was actually quite disappointed. From the front desk hostesses having some what of an attitude to the waiter forgetting our drinks. I was just so disappointed.
The restaurant is very attractive. We had a reservation for eight and they squished us into a table for six but we worked it out. The food and drinks were excellent. I was happy there were veggie options. At the beginning of the evening our server was very attentive but as the restaurant got busier he ignored us, our drinks sat empty and we had difficulty even paying our bill. I had to stand up and wave my arms to even get anyone to come over. Other than that it was a pleasant experience and I would return.
Not fond of eating in the wine cellar with no bay view, our bad for making reservations late. But otherwise outstanding!
The “best” $17.00 margarita tasted like cheap margarita mix. The remainder from shaker spilled all over and waitor did not ask if he could bring me another. It should be automatic offer to replace drink. A la carte tacos were good but expensive for just a taco. If I’m paying $20 for 2 tacos it should include sides. Ambience was fine for casual place.
Had an 8pm reservation and didn’t get seated until 8:30
I’m sorry to say that I had an incredibly disappointing experience dining at SOL on my husband’s birthday. I made a reservation for 6:30 and was excited to try this restaurant for the first time – one of the main reasons I picked it for this special occasion was because it was on the water. So I knew that even though we might not get a table right by a window, at least that would add to the fun atmosphere and ambiance. We were shown to our table shortly after 6:30, but I was dismayed when the hostess led us down a half flight of stairs to what they call their “private dining room.” In reality, it felt like we were in a small basement room that they had halfheartedly converted into an overflow dining area. There were a handful of tables, no windows, and an unused bar at the end of the room where extra supplies were stacked—including an iron sitting on top of the bar. Lovely. Through our entire dinner, only two other tables were occupied in this room, adding to the feeling that we were the leftovers relegated to this pathetic dining area. A few members of a different party gathered at a table down there as they waited for their whole party to assemble (after which they were shown to their table on the main floor) and one of them said it best when she walked down the stairs and looked around: “Well, this is depressing.” I was so frustrated that this was the extraordinarily un-fun setting for what should have been a fun birthday dinner for my husband.
On top of that frustration, the service we experienced was mediocre. After sitting down, it was at least five minutes before any server came over to greet us or take our drink order. I will freely admit that the food we had was delicious. The Taco Tuesday menu had some great options, and I particularly loved the shrimp taquitos and animale taco. I would try SOL again sometime for Taco Tuesday after my irritation has worn off, but only if I was not seated in that awful “private dining room.”
Sat “outside “ much quieter than inside. Good for lunch conversation
Sol mexican cocina is a great place to dine for special occasions it has a beautiful view of the docks and has amazing food it is a little pricey but the food is great
Food was fantastic! nice location. Live music a little loud.
I have been here many times before and it’s been great. Yesterday was the worst experience I’ve had. I brought my boyfriend there for the first time for his birthday. We checked in early. There were 5 parties that showed up after us that were seated before us. When they finally did seat us they put us at a table in the back corner that wasn’t even clean or ready. After quickly realizing that was a bad idea they hostess back tracked and said she could seat us near the bar.
It took 20 minutes after we were seated to receive service. During the lunch we were constantly waiting for service.
Not a good experience, we were very disappointed.
Great food and location . The drinks are really tasty Small plates great service . Bathroom a little dirty
Not our best visit to Sol Cocina. The food was tasty enough as usual, but we had some issues:
1. All of a sudden they are charging $4 for Valet parking. Neither we nor our friends remember ever having a parking fee so we didn’t think twice about finding the self-parking area.
2. There was bit much paprika (or whatever spice they add) on the chips.
3. Two of us asked for sour cream as an add-on, and it was soupy. Neither of us even tried it. The explanation for the consistency didn’t make sense. The server said he’d remove the charge ($2 each for a small amount) but did not.
We still enjoyed our meal, but these little things were pretty irritating.
Wonderful authentic Baja style Mexican. Great to get several tacos and share. The table side corn is a must try. Margaritas are delicious too.
Great service. Delicious food and drinks. Nice and fun ambiance. We recommend and will go back to try other menu items.
The chicken tacos were dark meat.
The chips were stale. Our waiter brought us new ones.
Took a long time to get bill...
Mexican corn was delicious 😋
Great service and great food. Our favorite Mexican food. $1 corn on National Corn Day made it even better!!
Great leisurely lunch with great service & tasty food.
