Persian
Brooklyn restaurant featuring authentic Persian home cooking made with love.

Traditionally, Persian families gathered around the sofreh, an iconic fabric spread that served as the backdrop for beautiful displays of food during New Year, weddings, and other celebrations.

More than a decorative tablecloth, the sofreh represents the warmth and hospitality that Persian people are known for. We embody this ethos at Sofreh, with traditional Persian dishes that represent/speak to the rich heritage and diversity of the wide region that is modern-day Iran. We want Sofreh to feel like a second home - a place where you can experience comforting food, made with love, in an inviting atmosphere.
Our philosophy is simple - food should be authentic, well crafted, and delicious. We capture this essence in everything we create, from our homemade yogurts to our fresh-baked breads. We even make our own pickles and marmalades.

We booked a sitter, had our reservation set and we’re off to Sofreh, not knowing what to expect from the food, but anticipating the same quality of service you’d get at any restaurant charging these prices. We were shockingly disappointed. We were seated late for our reservation, and were barely at the table for forty five minutes before the hostess came to our table and informed us that it was needed for another reservation. No apologies, no comps, just an incredibly rude aggressive expectation that we vacate immediately - and we still had unfinished drinks in front of us. Don’t come here.

Delicious. Interesting. Loved the soupy "ash" noodle soup -- must unusual and good. Excellent lamb shank. Lovely herbed rice. Very good chopped cucumber/tomato salad.

They haven't worked out the service yet and don't know how to turn tables to maximize their efficiency- as a result we had a very anxious owner rushing us out the door unnecessarily.

I booked a 6pm reservation but then needed to push it to 6:30. The restaurant was willing to accommodate but said they would need the table back at 8:15 for an 8:30 reservation. We were ok with this (and I was grateful for their flexibility) but at 7:30 the owner came and told us we needed to give up the table for people arriving in 15 minutes. There were many empty tables and no one was waiting to be seated, so I suppose they were anticipating a dinner rush at 8 pm. I told the owner that we had been told that we had the table for another 45 minutes (he said we didn't) and was happy to show him the email- he wasn't really interested and it was just awkward and quite frankly a bit rude.

Regardless by 7:38 the owner brought our check to the table (we hadn't asked for it) and by 7:50 we were out the door because the owner was hovering over us and we no longer felt welcome. I should also note that we stood outside the restaurant talking for a bit so we happened to notice that by 8:15 when we left our table was still empty (as were several others) and there wasn't anyone waiting to be seated.

The food and the decor were good but I am not likely to go back anytime soon. I would have preferred that they had just told us we couldn't push our reservation than to be asked to leave prematurely. The experience left us disappointed.

Beautiful restaurant with unique food but the service was terrible. We had to get up to find out server each time we needed something. The food was generally good but under seasoned and was expecting more flavor. Disappointing!

Food is just not good enough. Tastes tend to be too salty.Restaurant isn't nearly as good as those in London around Connaught Village and Little Venice.
Sour is a popular Persian taste but adding a bit more sweetness would be more helpful for Americans. Kateh in London is that. Also, many dishes are sour ans salty, a tough combination. Also, kebabs here are just meatballs instead of being grilled.

Loooved Sofreh. It was our 2nd attempt to eat here and finally success. Worth the try. The food was a unique and creative take on Persian cuisine. The drinks were well crafted. The hostess was extremely attentive and knowledgeable on everything regarding patrons and menu - unfortunately not all the waitstaff was as helpful. Whenever we could we referred to her. Other than that our evening was marvelous and we cant wait to come back.

This was perfect. We ordered the lamb shank, the smoked eggplant, as mains for 2 of the party, and the third had the koffteh and ash stew. We started with the yogurt dip with shallots and the Shiraz salad.

From my point of view, the smoked eggplant was the clear winner with the lamb running a close second.

The bread they served with the dip was heavenly, as were the saffron rose infused cocktails.

All in all, I will definitely go back many times.

I had booked reservations at Sofreh before the reviews started coming in, so I'm grateful that I did - because they were seemingly booked through Mid-November.
Disclaimer: I am Persian, and my mother is a caterer - so I know good Persian food.
We were a hungry table of 4, with 3 non-Iranians with one who'd never tasted Persian food at all. We ordered;
Apps - eggplant spread, kofteh, cucumber yogurt dip, watermelon feta salad
Entrees - 2x lamb shank, half chicken, beef & potato kebab
Sides - saffron basmati rice, herb rice, tahdig
Drinks - Mezcal Watermelon, Isfahan gin fizz

Overall review of the food was very good. The wonderful thing about it was that both the dishes and ingredients were authentically Persian. The bread provided for dipping was warm and tasty. The appetizers were all lovely. The lamb and chicken were both delicious...the beef and potato kebab was the only thing that I'd say was good, but not noteworthy. Both sides of rice were delicious, though slightly clumpy (which may seem weird to say, but Persian rice when cooked should be light and fluffy). For the cost of dishes, I would have expected bigger portions. Overall, the food was authentic and delicious.

The service, on the other hand, was unexpectedly bad. The hostess was difficult to find, and not very welcoming - it seemed like her other responsibilities outweighed greeting and seating people. The waiter was not friendly or informative. Little things you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber, like telling you when a dish you've ordered won't accommodate 4 (kofteh comes in 3s). There was also a limit on tahdig (one per table...which I can understand, but the two pieces that they provide then needed to be further shared). Drinks took forever, and the waiter wasn't available often to take our drink orders making us flag down other staff members to inform him that we required his attention. Overall, I'd likely wait until they get their house in order before going back.

The food is very good — the roasted beet appetizer, chicken with barberry and lamb shank were standouts. The service is a little weak, with the water server pouring into my friend’s glass of vodka. Honest error, but the ice should have tipped him off. And i hated my cocktail and after one sip, moved it to the end of the table. I was disappointed that none of our servers asked if there was a problem or offered to bring something else.
That said, i’d go again because the place is lovely and cozy and the food close to the best in the neighborhood.

Great experience. I'm generally unfamiliar with Persian food, and this was a great introduction. Generally familiar ingredients with new spices, all prepared to the highest standard. Had a veggie meal except for the lamb shank, which was outstanding. Will return as soon as I can get another reservation and will do an all-veggie evening.

I've never written a review on OpenTable so ignore my username, inside joke to myself just wanted to see if they put it on there.

Sofreh is amazing. I cook and thought going in that my food is surely just as good/better. No... the food here is amazing. I didn't care really about the cocktails, but whatever I didn't come to this place for cocktails. I came for delicious Persian food, and they nailed it.

We loved this new Brooklyn gem. The room was fresh and lively. The flavors of all the dishes were so original and clearly made with love and passion. The owner /chef stopped by our table and gave us a wonderful introduction to her personal history of cooking Persian Food with the working women in her family in Iran before the Revolution. We heard about the restaurant from Melissa Clarke's review in the NYT. It did not disappoint.

It was amazing. Read a review in the NY times and then that it was named #50 in top 50 NYC restaurants by Time Out NY. Had to go and brought a Persian friend with me. She said ti was the real deal. We both loved it and will be back. Great food and service. Ambiance too. Cool décor. We ordered 4 appys (the yoghurt with cucumber, eggplant (wow), roasted zucchini (yum) and an 'ash" stew my friend said she always ate when she cooked. It was great. We also split the fish of the day. Was so full took half of that home for lunch the next day. We had some interesting drinks too. This place is a keeper. Owner was vey nice too

We were a group of 5 and shared all our dishes as suggested by Chef Nasim. Starting with Grilled Eggplant, Feta & Herbs, Kofteh, Summer Squash & Feta and the Watermelon Feta Salad we eased into the main courses: Half Chicken, Lamb Shanks and the dish that no eggplant lover will forget, Smoked Eggplant. Meals were complemented with the different varieties of cocktails and wine. The perfect ending: Persian Ice Cream, Rosewater Sorbet and Rose Custard. The quality and freshness of the incredients in this restaurant are outstanding. Our only regret not living around the corner of this unique new place.

Delicious food and great service! I ate way too much because it was so yummy and I wanted to try so many things. I can’t wait to go back and try more although I would definitely eat everything I had again. I can’t pick a star dish - we had the eggplant spread and cucumber yogurt appetizers. Both were delicious with the warm flat bread. The chicken main course was mouthwatering and finished the meal off with the custard. Topped with fabulous cocktails, it was a fantastic meal. We never felt rushed and the wait staff was consistently present without feeling hovered over. A great dinner outing.
