Brooklyn restaurant featuring authentic Persian home cooking made with love.
Traditionally, Persian families gathered around the sofreh, an iconic fabric spread that served as the backdrop for beautiful displays of food during New Year, weddings, and other celebrations.
More than a decorative tablecloth, sofreh represents the warmth and hospitality that Persian people are known for. We embody this ethos at Sofreh, with traditional Persian dishes that represent/speak to the rich heritage and diversity of the region that is modern-day Iran. We want Sofreh to feel like a second home - a place where you can experience comforting food, made with love, in an inviting atmosphere.
Our philosophy is simple - food should be authentic, well crafted, and delicious. We capture this essence in everything we create, from our homemade yogurts to our fresh-baked breads. We even make our own pic
In a word, amazing! Every aspect of Sofreh was well above expectations.
We had a really outstanding experience at Sofreh. We love Persian food but haven't quite found an authentic experience where you can eat Persian foods that taste like they're made at home. Sofreh delivered this beautifully! The menu was so perfectly constructed to capture the essence of Persian culture and the flavors melded together very nicely. The chef introduces unique flavors like tahini, tamarind and chili so effortlessly and though these are not traditional "Persian flavors" they compliment the dishes very well. She even stopped by our table and gave us lots of interesting insight into the construction of the menu and inspiration for the unique new flavors. The classic dishes like the herb and beef stew (ghorme sabzi) and the bean and noodle soup (aash reshte) were executed to perfection. Even the more simple appetizers like the freshly made barbari bread with feta spread and the Shirazi salad were full of flavor. We really enjoyed our experience and will definitely be going back!
Excellent flavors and service
For my husband and I this is a special occasion restaurant. We came last year for his birthday with a Persian friend. This year is was just the two of us. The food is extraordinary and it's quiet enough to be able to have an intimate conversation. We try a bit of everything but I have had the sirloin entree both times and it is perfection, especially with the house pickled vegetables. The wine selection is very good but you can't go wrong with a glass of the house wine, a lovely Cabernet Franc.
The food was outstanding and the staff was very pleasant and well informed about the menu, wine and recommended options we loved.
I’ve been to Sofreh before and really liked it, it has a great vibe and the food is delicious, which is why I wanted to take my friend while she was visiting from out of town.
We had ordered a few appetizers and then shared the lamb shank with rice plus tahdig. It was a lot of food! We couldn’t finish it and couldn’t take the leftovers home.
The reason I give the service poor marks is because of the way the male owner spoke to us afterward, saying that it was very authentic food and asking why we wouldn’t take it home. He stood there for a while and wouldn’t really accept no for an answer which was awkward. The entire encounter felt like he was fussing at us.
It was uncomfortable and questionable behavior. I would’ve honestly given the restaurant another 5 star review had it not been for him.
An explosion of amazing flavors, excellent service, beautiful yet simple atmosphere. We both loved it and can’t wait to go back.
One of the best restaurants in all of New York!!
Sofreh was a delightful treat. Truly a unique, one of a kind dining experience featuring delicious Persian food with a modern twist. I can't say enough wonderful things about our dinner, from the meal itself to the staff, to the owner making sure you feel at home, everything was perfect. Will definitely be returning as often as we can get a reservation and will recommend to everyone.
Terrific restaurant. We loved the food and chatting with the owner. Would definitely return!!!
The best Persian food in New York City hands down! I'm a persian cook and I know what I am talking about. Every dish is perfect
have been dying to come here and finally snagged a reservation. It was worth the wait!! flavors were sublime and delicate. Often in Persian food, certain spices such as Saffron or the flavor of pomegranate is overwhelming but not here! The Meatball on the entree or the saffron rice is the perfect example of this! Loved the crunchy onions that accompanied the eggplant appetizer.Excellent service!!(thank you, Tony!)
cannot wait to go back!
Food was wonderful as was staff. A bit close to your neighboring diners.
Food is truly amazing. Get the fish. Smoked eggplant appetizer starts it all with wonderful flavors. Lamb shank meat is delectable.
This is my second visit to Sofreh. The reason for less than 5 stars is the mediocre and downright awkward service at this restaurant. On my first visit (with the same guest) the service was also poor but I assumed it was because the restaurant was new. This time, I don't believe we should have been subject to such odd behavior as exhibited by the server: 1. We were told we had to order everything at once even though we wanted to order some, eat, order more, eat, etc. This is because when we visit a restaurant we like (and the food is excellent btw) we blow it out: we eat a lot, we spend money, we go for all courses, usually twice. It's an EVENT. The server said no when we requested to order a few things and later a few more, etc etc.
2. We ordered 2 of one item and were told by the server that no, we couldn't have more than one. Not because 2 didn't exist, just because one was enough. We said we ate it before. We said we were aware of the portion size, which is SMALL! We said we were hungry. We said it was delicious. No dice. We got only ONE. 3. Server also said that no, the chef didn't want the salad coming before the main course because they were meant to come together. At this point I put my food down and said "Don't worry about what the chef says, worry about what I SAY." 4. After being allowed only ONE portion of the dish mentioned in #2, we were instructed that it would be good to order a dish based the same way as item #2. Because the chef said it goes well with the entree. Um, what about the one we wanted in #2? 5. I gave up at this point: After mentioning we don't eat dairy with meat, we were told to order a dish with whey in it. That IS dairy but I didn't want to clap back at this server....again. It was actually exhausting. The talk of the odd service dominated the dinner conversation, which wasn't pleasant. At the end of what would have been the first round of food for us (5 dishes, 2 people), instead of ordering more, we bounced. ;-(
The staff are very nice, the food is very good, the space is very nice, and the location is accessible by public transportation. Some of the appetizer/side portions are ridiculously small, and the only dessert we tried was so-so, nothing to write home about, won't order again. The appetizers, the main dishes, and the "Ash Reshteh" all tasted very good.
The food was very fresh and delicious. Service was rushed and server was obnoxious. We were not able to order appetizers for the table until we ordered our entire meal. “Warm“ dessert came out cold. Desserts were not great.
Beautiful Decour and atmosphere, but the music was too loud. Very pricey.
Another superb meal, and, for our friends who’d never been here before, a real revelation. One of them told our server after we’d tasted a few of the appetizers that he was so excited and looking forward to the rest of the meal. We always get the Ash stew to share with our other guests, and it is always wonderful and, on a cold night, the perfect way to start the evening.
Food is fantastic as always. It was extremely annoying, however, that the server would not allow us to start with ordering (many) appetizers before deciding what (and how much) we wanted to order for main courses. It's hard to judge ahead of time how full one will be and the restaurant should be pleased that we're ordering so much to start; in any event, they should be willing to accommodate such a reasonable request.
Wonderful! We enjoyed a meal with flavors We never before experienced! Wow!
The place was airy and bright. Service prompt and low key. Deco well thought out. But the food is the true star: the chef has achieved perfection balancing the tastes and texture. Truly great food.
Went there to celebrate my birthday and loved it! Very special and delicious meal!
My favorite special spot in Bklyn. Your reserved table is ready and the staff is happy to recommend the perfect meal. Really appreciate the sound proofing under the tables.
This is the perfect restaurant! I can’t recommend it enough. Each dish is crafted so expertly and with so much flavor that the meal transports you. You have to try their chicken in plum sauce, it is out of this world. The steak with pomegranate sauce was also perfection. Eggplant appetizer was awesome and so was their in-house bread. Man I loved this place. Save room for their amazing Persian ice cream also! I can’t wait to bring some friends back here.
My wife and a friend ate here on a weekend visit to Brooklyn and thought everything was superb. We shared a number of the dishes (eggplant dip, Meatball starter, catch of the day, lamb dish) and a couple others and everyone was well prepared and incredible flavor. We had tried 2 different cocktails and both were interesting and tasty. Our server was friendly and efficient. Top marks all around on Sofreh
As always an absolute delight!
I didn’t appreciate being made to stand, cold and dripping, and wait to be seated in a fully set restaurant, empty when I arrived, as the bartender pointedly told me, 8 minutes early for my reservation, which they held w a credit card and warned they would cancel after 20 minutes. All tables were set! But I had to stand there, a sixty y o woman who simply didn’t want to wait out in the rain, till the stroke of 6pm, when they deigned to seat me. Food, etc, aside, I won’t be back. I was born in this city, btw, and no, that’s not how to welcome customers.
The food was really good, we had a vegetarian in our group and there was a lot of choice. I personally loved liked the carrots with yoghurt and the meatball, with crispy onions: yum! The decor was nice very modern but it was a little too brightly lit for my personal taste. Then there was the service, it was not necessarily bad but there was no spark. We discussed that it felt a little bit like they were robots performing at 20%. After dinner I was satisfied with the nice meal and excellent bottle of Sancerre (great wine list in general) but a little underwhelmed with the overall experience unfortunately. Maybe it was just the night?
The food was amazing but our waiter was not helpful at all. She questioned every choice we made even though we knew what we wanted to order (which was a very odd experience). Also, although the food is more mezze style the kitchen only allows you to order once and no additions to the order can be made.
This is my new favorite restaurant. I ate at a Michelin star restaurant a few days before and Sofreh far outweighed that experience. The food was spectacular with the Persian tastes melding beautifully for a beyond satisfying taste and experience. I loved, loved, loved everything about this restaurant!
Loved it. Am adding to monthly rotation (when not traveling).
Wow, saffron rice blew me away. Buttery and just delicious. The tahini salad was a bit heavy with dressing but good flavor though. Wish it had more dates or something lemony. The salad and cauliflower were both spicy which I liked but it wasn't described as such on the menu. My friend doesn't like spicy food so we would have changed our appetizer choice.
Smoked eggplant was good but perhaps too smoky? It was nicely balanced though with the rice. And the chicken with plum sauce was also delicious. Bread had good flavor but wasn't amazing. Overall, ambiance was awesome - love an open kitchen where you can see the chef. And the server was very nice and gave us modifications for things based on our original selection. Food was good but I would select something different perhaps for appetizers.
Went with a group of 6, we ordered a lot of dishes, everything was excellent!
Amazing experience as always.
I’m not sure what to write other than, you really need to eat here. The food was impeccable. The service, outstanding. We were blown away and immediately thinking of other people we could bring here. All around amazing experience.
This was our fourth time here and it has always been excellent. One of our top 3 favorites in NYC.
It got a tad loud as time went on, music. But I'm sound sensitive.
All else, superb.
Staff were super helpful in giving ordering suggestions. Lovely atmosphere--bright, happy, and quiet enough to carry on conversaton. And so nice to have a menu with exciting dishes--not the usual Brooklyn bistro fare. The starters, salads, and grains are super! For a party of 4 like we were, I recommend splitting lots of those and maybe just getting one or two main dishes.
Fantastic food at this gem Iranian restaurant.
all of the food was delicious with a bounty of lovely flavors and bouquet of spices. recommendations were all excellent and cocktails were a wonderful way to start the evening. next time we will order a little less food! wait staff was lovely and ambiance comfortable.
