About Society Cafe
Hidden inside the charming Walker Hotel Greenwich Village, Society Cafe is a new market-to-table American restaurant by rising-star chef, Christopher Zabita. Chef Zabita's training in award-winning restaurants such as Victoria and Alberts, Bar Boulud and Marc Forgione has prepared him for his new passion project at Society Cafe as he takes the helm of the kitchen as Executive Chef.
Relying on the purveyors at the nearby Union Square Farmers Market where he personally shops 4-days per week, Chef Zabita has created an evolving, seasonal menu that is sustainable and locally sourced. The beautiful new dining room features accents of walnut, leather and teal for a modern yet sophisticated surrounding.
Guests bask in natural light over breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch from the stunning skylight above. As the sun sets, the fireplace adds a soft, warm inviting glow while the downtown crowd comes alive in true New York City fashion.

Went for Brunch. It is a cute space from the outside, and the bar area is cute. the booths are roomy in the dining room. those are the positives. Service is intermittent, and non attentive. Ordered brunch beverages (mimosa, etc.). The orange juice and champagne in the drink was stale/flat old/borderline rancid. Same with our friends bellini.
It took a long time to get those basic drinks and restaurant was not very busy. Service disappeared for awhile. We got a bad feeling that if the drinks were bad the food would be also. AS such we paid bill and left prior to eating.
It's rare when every element of your meal is delightful, but Society Cafe pulled it off. Except for not having the whiskey my husband wanted for his Old Fashioned, everything was perfect. We were seated right away in a cozy spot. Cocktails were nice and strong. Appetizer (lobster tater tots) portion was small but decadent. Entrees were rich and filling but not heavy. Brussels sprouts side was delightful, and the dulce de leche cheesecake was ridiculous. Our server was attentive but not intrusive, and the staff refilled our water regularly. Plates were cleared promptly but we weren't rushed. I would definitely go back and refer friends here.
Society Cafe always amazes me. This was a special event. New Year's Eve. Chef Chris's menu was off the chart. From the First- Amuse course of Beau Soleil Oyster en Gelee, Kaluga Caviar to the app of Cauliflower Panna Cotta, Pickled Raisins, Marcona Almonds, Vadouvan I could taste the local in every morsel. What knocked it out of the park was the third course of Maine Lobster, Chanterelles, Bisque, Scallion Hushpuppy, Belgian Endive. Keep in mind this was a 5 course tasting menu of the talents of Chef Zabita. What's more, is Chef made it personal by visiting tables. The overall ambiance was also amazing. Festive but in true Walker Hotel elegant and understated. During the course of the night, multiple people including the manager, Jessica who took personal interest in what appeared to be everyone's evening. I am always skeptical of NYE dinners in NYC- not anymore. Great Job Team Society Cafe- attached is a photo of Chef's Foie Gras Agnolotti, Parmesan Brodo, Black Truffle- I can die now..
Although the food was incredible, it was overshadowed by the terrible service we received. Not only were we sitting at the bar staring at our empty table, waiting to be sat by the hostess that seemed to be nowhere, but we waited 10 minutes for the server to come to our table. Though the food was timed well coming from the kitchen, we ordered several rounds of drinks throughout the night and 15-20 minutes went by before we reminded our waiter that we'd ordered drinks. Even then it took another 15-20 minutes to get the drinks. Several in our party were frustrated and ordered two drinks at once to keep up with the slow service. I would understand if there were limited staff or it was busy, but our server was mostly standing near our table.
For such a high-end restaurant the service was not nearly up to the level of quality it should be.
It's a beautiful place with wonderful food. It's a shame the service was not up to par. There are plenty of other beautiful restaurants with 5-star service in New York to spend an evening here, and for that reason I won't be returning.
This place should be good. Great location, great space, good menu, chef has talent. But the restaurant was empty at 8pm on a Friday night and after eating here I understand why. The place is very poorly run, the servers are not good and the manager clearly doesnt run the place well. Further, the food is ok but its just not as good as it should be. Its difficult to describe but something is just off. Overall disappointed with it because it has a lot of potential but its just a poorly run place
I consider this a find. I requested the "least acidic" wine available per glass and ordered a rose; waiter, unasked, brought me a sip to sample before ordering. My friend and I shared the charcuterie appetizer, which could have been lunch for both of us. We ordered salad entrees (mine was best: tuna comfit and baby kale) and then excellent coffee. Will certainly return. Staff was lovely every step of the way.
We had an excellent lunch here in November. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was very relaxing. We loved the whole experience and would certainly dine here again. Our table was very comfortable with the restaurant quite spacious, considering most in NYC.
My husband loved his burger and said it was the best anywhere. Our salad was also delicious. I loved the flatbread pizza too. We were not rushed, and totally enjoyed our lunch here. Great neighborhood.
We had a wonderful 80th birthday celebration at Society Cafe. We were there for a Saturday brunch. The food was wonderful, as was the service. We enjoyed the appetizers: DiPalo's burrata and mushrooms, the charred romaine Caesar salad, and shishito peppers. The entrees were delicious: Eggs Florentine with Hollandaise was a hit; the olive oil pancakes; brioche french toast. The pastry chef made a birthday cake just for us, chocolate cake with whipped cream and bananas. The space is lovely and the seating was comfortable and spacious. We loved that we were able to have a conversation without shouting. We will be back.
The food at Society Cafe is excellent. It is fresh, well spiced, prepared in unusual ways, and absolutely delicious. The service was not so good. First of all, the wine pour is stingy at best. When we raised this to the waiter, he argued instead of generously adding to the scant amount in our glasses. He had difficulty describing the dishes (e.g. he assumed we knew what "charred pasta" is). Also, the waiter was incredibly annoying - he stood a few feet from the table and commented on our conversation. We just wanted him to go away!
Talk about a delicious experience from start to finish !!
There are some serious culinary skills going on in the kitchen here with delicious offerings. Our waiter Ryan was very attentive too, and knows the wine list and suggested nice pairings with our meal.
We will definitely be back ;)
Went to entertain business clients on a Sunday early evening. Aside from a few other people, we were the only ones there, which made it comfortable and relatively quiet. Keep in mind, this place was A LONG WAY AWAY from being busy.
Weirdly, however, the bar "ran out" of one of the pre-mixed signature, seasonal cocktails - the Boogie Woogie (really? pre-mixing in 2017 in NYC? not cool). Whatever, wasn't a deal breaker.
We ordered a bunch of appetizers and pasta-dishes-as-entrees for the table to share as a first course. Everyone ordered their own entrees, and we also ordered 1 each of their 3 side-dishes to come out with the entrees for everyone to share. So, of course, the side-dishes didn't make it out when the entrees came out. I had asked about it and was told that the kitchen was "firing them now". 30 minutes later, everyone more or less finished their entrees, and no side-dishes to be seen.
We, of course, were not charged for the side dishes, but seriously? You had MAYBE 10% seated of the full capacity the space can hold when it's really slammed, and the kitchen just "forgot" to get the side dishes fired in time to come out with the entree? Why, because they were so slammed with other orders? Not sure what's up with that, but it sort of left a negative feeling at the end.
Lovely restaurant that's pleasantly bright during the day thanks to a large skylight in the dining room. Everyone is friendly, service is very pleasant, and the food is delicious. We went for brunch... the olive oil pancakes are amazing, and they make a tasty sangria. The bar is great too. Coming back in a few weeks to host a celebratory brunch - the manager was extremely kind and accommodating during the process of coordinating the arrangements. We can't wait to return!
I have been to the Society cafe twice and both times it was a lovely dining expereience. First I came with my mom and a friend for lunch, food was excellent! Then I came with a party of 9 for a bachelorette. We felt extremely welcomed at the Society Cafe, the director of sales even stopped by the table and offered a round of bubbles. Highly recommend! Great food, lovely atmosphere and nice staff!
We went for the NY Restaurant week which was a three course lunch menu for $29. It was a great value and the portions were really well-sized. The food was delicious! The roasted carrots which sound like a somewhat boring dish were amazing! The main was also really good and the dessert was to die for (chocolate hazelnut tart with caramel gelato). Super rich but super delicious. My husband got a club sandwich which we were a little disappointed in- it really had nothing special to set it apart, but I guess what do you expect from a club sandwich?
The ambiance was nice and the service was very attentive. I would return.
A good destination for creative dining in the heart of the Village. The food is good, but realize that you are paying boutique hotel restaurant prices - in other words, come when you can write off the bill! We came during Restaurant Week, and thoroughly enjoyed the meal, and I got the wine pairing, which was a steal at 3 glasses of wine for $25, when the cheapest glass of wine on their regular menu was $14, but half of our bill was alcohol (for those who didn't choose the wine pairing) and aside from me, everyone got a single drink.
So - to sum up, creative and appetizing food, but very pricey. Beware the alcohol!
Drinks were pretty expensive - a glass of wine started at $15 and cocktails at $18. Unfortunately, I found a hair in one of the cocktails I had, so I was hesitant about the rest of the food. Expensive for that place - would rather go to a nice steakhouse for the amount we paid.
