Socarrat Paella Bar - Chelsea
Socarrat, the quintessence of the perfect paella and for which the restaurant is named, is the delectable, sensuous crust that forms on the bottom of the paella pan when the liquid is rendered and the rice reaches its peak of succulence. The menu, an authentic array of delicious dishes from the regions of Spain specializing in traditional tapas with an accent on paella and fideua (which substitutes fried noodles for rice) that can be characterized as a true exploration for the palette.
Socarrat Paella Bar Chelsea's ambiance denotes feelings of warmth, comfort and hospitality. A neighborhood staple with a small, intimate space comprised primarily of one large communal table with bar and smaller communal tables available.
**Please note that all of our tables at the Chelsea location are high tops with stool seating, with a combination of communal and private tables.**

What Insiders Are Saying
No bigger than a subway car, Socarrat packs the majority of their patrons on bar stools around a communal table. The idea here is that they do paella the way it's done in Spain, as one big family. In such a small space, keeping the drool inside your mouth while you wait for your food is no easy task.
BEST meat paella on the planet! Really great tapas; chorizo, fried calamari, pork belly (was a special) fried artichokes, garlic shrimp. All delish. Excellent white sangria. Friendly staff. Kinda noisy. Hi-top seating only and stools are a little uncomfortable. But worth a trip from ANYWHERE for the carne paella.
This is a neighborhood favorite! It should be yours too. Food is consistently very good and outstanding service.
Real Spanish Experience: food + environment
Hands down, the best paella in NYC, maybe the States. Always have the squid ink paella and it’s fabulous. The staff is friendly and helpful. Highly recommend
Everything was very good. We did end up showing up 10 minutes late and the hostess told us that she was about to give away our table, that wasn’t very nice. The waiter was excellent and the food was very good, the Paella was not as great as I will would’ve expected
The food was wonderful, the service terrific, and the overall experience great. So happy we chose this restaurant!
I have been going to this restaurant for long time, the service is inconsistent, and lately the food as well. I always order the same Meat Paella, and last time it was made differently, without some of the normal ingredients.
Wonderful staff and ambience. Food was absolutely delicious. Can't wait to go again
The staff makes the restaurant shine! We loved speaking with the bartender and Alfredo on favorite dishes, soccer, and NYE plans. We will certainly be back.
A friend and I just came back from Barcelona and wanted to relive our sangria and paella meals. The food was exceptional (Socarrat paella), but the staff asked us so many times about ordering, it made us feel rushed out. The place was full, so I understand, but it took away from our dinner!
Excellent food, the tapas are amazing. Especially the octopus!
Very expensive thou.
Was craving paellas after watching a cooking show and this place did not disappoint! the Tapas were just as good as their paellas. When the paellas came out, it was a mix of crunchy and soft and the seasoning was on point. Also all of their desserts were homemade. Literally everything was really good, would recommend and come back again!
The food was delicious and the service outstanding. I will be back!
Food was good but service was poor. They asked us to move to the bar exactly 2 hours after our reservation time even though there were empty tables of our size everywhere and we were clearly still finishing our drinks.
we went a happy hour. wow. all the tapas were half price. inexpensive and very good. i didn't love the chicken skewers but the eggplant napoleon was fabulous; shrimp very good; wines were happy hour prices. friendly bar staff and patrons.
Have never tried the Carne Paella so not sure how it was supposed to taste. I know the rice is meant to be crispy, but I believe this was burnt.
Delicious paella, very good service and atmosphere!!
A little pricey though.
Delicious food and kind service. Had chorizo, smoked salmon, seafood paella. Highly recommend.
It was ok but I expected more based on the reviews. But the service was pretty good
I just didn't like the food. Sorry. Paella is made differently around the world. This version didn't appeal to me and I didn't want to eat it. My friend, however, did. So this is just my opinion.
Our experience at Soccarat was very pleasant from the delicious and unique appetizers to the authentic and generously portioned main paella dish to the amazing desserts. I would highly recommend this restaurant when visiting the City!
Wonderful and authentic tapas and paella. The folks who work here are actually from Spain. Super friendly. Great sangria too! Dos vino tinto por favor!
As a vegetarian, I was disappointed with the options. Not much of a sweet paella person and that was the only brunch option. All of the brunch dishes seemed heavy on the meat. I appreciated the kind service. I loved the fried artichokes.
The food was amazing and the wait staff was helpful and very attentive! What a great find! Thank you Yelp. We will definitely be back!
I know this restaurant's differentiation is that its paella is authentic. Its crustiness/dryness is much closer to paella I've had in the UK and in Spain (Seville) than in NY and NJ. This being said, I thought it was actually a bit too dry/burnt, to the point that this quality actually took away from the taste. The chicken pieces in the paella were extremely dry/overcooked, and the seafood was placed on top before serving so that it didn't overcook (but it then lacked the paella flavor). The croquettes were good but small. Paella is usually served in a huge portion; here, it was just enough (portion for2 for 2 people).
The restaurant is beautiful, great ambiance, and the service was nicely attentive without overdoing it.
I would try it again, but if the paella is again so dry/burnt then I might not go back.
Great place and amazing Paella. The long table is a bit tight, but it's good for conversation.
We had an awful experience.
Appetizers were inedible.
When we flagged down the manager his response was “People are eating these at other tables” dismissively.
We cancelled the paella order and left.
Andrew, our server, was very friendly and knowledgeable with wine and food recommendations. Will definitely be coming here again when we’re back in NYC!
Good food..great happy hour. Helpful, friendly wait staff. Very high noise level.
Forgot our order, we waited one hour for overpriced mediocre paella. Didn’t even take it off the bill. Never again. They also jam you into tiny tables with other parties.
Just plain awesome! You can’t go wrong here. Food, service, atmosphere..it was exactly what I needed
Food was good
Very expensive!!! Super tiny portions ( two little piece of squid for $15!!!) omfg
Have always enjoyed the food at this restaurant but sitting in the bar area was always very noisy, crowded and unpleasant. This time we sat in the other room which had a communal table and a couple of individual tables. It was much quieter and much more comfortable. No one was at the communal table and the other table was occupied. I suspect it would have been much louder if the communal table was full. The service was excellent and attentive. It was a perfect end following a performance at the Joyce Theater.
Loved the food and service. The seating was horrible
Hands down best paella in NYC. Great service and home-like atmosphere.
The atmosphere was very nice. Decor was great, we sat at the high table that faced the outside with the windows open so we had beautiful scenery. The service was great, the food was very good. The only negative was that we had the brunch that came with bottomless mimosas for a specific time - only 90 minutes. Our champagne glasses were empty longer than we would've liked & had to keep asking for refills. But other than that we enjoyed ourselves, the service was great & the food - wow.....I went with the chicken paella (hold the sausage) & it was incredible. Came out in a cast iron pot on a wooden pallet with mitten holders. Excellent dish!
Loved it. VERY friendly and accommodating. I have lived in Spain and enjoyed an authentic experience
Came here for my partner's and my six year anniversary. The staff was so kind, making sure that we got the bottle of sparkling wine we had specially requested to share at the table, and consistently checking in with us to make sure that everything exceeded expectations. While the paella is meant to be the star of the meal, I would highly recommend parties of more than one take advantage of the great tapas selection, in particular the fried artichoke and the pan con tomate.
Great food, great service helped make for a great evening out.
