Socarrat Paella Bar - Chelsea
Socarrat, the quintessence of the perfect paella and for which the restaurant is named, is the delectable, sensuous crust that forms on the bottom of the paella pan when the liquid is rendered and the rice reaches its peak of succulence. The menu, an authentic array of delicious dishes from the regions of Spain specializing in traditional tapas with an accent on paella and fideua (which substitutes fried noodles for rice) that can be characterized as a true exploration for the palette.
Socarrat Paella Bar Chelsea's ambiance denotes feelings of warmth, comfort and hospitality. A neighborhood staple with a small, intimate space comprised primarily of one large communal table with bar and smaller communal tables available.
**Please note that all of our tables at the Chelsea location are high tops with stool seating, with a combination of communal and private tables.**

All was good until our waiter learned we would just be having tapas and wine, not tapas and paella and wine. He stopped being friendly, stopped asking if we wanted another round of drinks. We get it: you want high turnover or at least high dollar amounts. We just want to have some tapas and wine and not feel like you’re rushing us. Shame because I love this place otherwise.
The tapas were amazing. Nice size portions to share and very tasty. Nice balanced flavors, not too salty or bland. Everyone enjoyed all the selections. The two different paellas, the short rib and the seafood were both very tasty and had a nice crunchy crust. The sangria was nice and fruity tasting.
The calamari tapas, octopus tapas and ham tostados were very good and the staff were friendly.
Cochnillo is unexpectedly excellent, crispy and tasty suckling pig, worthy of the fair price.
Pescado y mariachi is, personally speaking, the best paella in NYC. very fresh seafood and well-sautéed underneath rice.
Happy hour is a must! Bartender always ready with a fabulous recommendation...
My husband and I have been going to Socarrat Chelsea for years and we've never had a bad experience. This time was no different. We requested a private high-top table; seated promptly, lovely Spanish music in the air. Enjoyed a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir, succulent octopus and perfectly cooked squid ink seafood paella for two. Oh, and the chocolate filled beignets were the perfect ending...no utensils needed, or the filling inside will ooze out; pop the whole thing in your mouth and enjoy. Manager, waiter, runner were all friendly and service was gracious and efficient. Thank you...we'll return soon.
Sat at the back at high table small table and enjoyed a reserve rioja temprenillo with tapas. Garlic shrimp is one of the best in the hood
Great food. Pleasant ambiance on the whole but it was excessively loud and hot the other night.
Always a wonderful time at Socarrat! Food and wine selections are exceptional.
It was perfect period!!!
Excellent experience. Authentically delicious. Appropriate attention. A great place to bring an out of town friend.
I was there for dinner with a friend. The ambiance was great, very Spanish like. It reminded me of my time Spain.
We were seated, service was decent, wine was good. The waiter recommended 4-6 tapas for two people. Luckily we ordered only 4. Portions were decent size however, the food was tasteless. We ordered Gambas al Ajillo which had no flavor and size of gambas were tiny. This is not how this dosh should look like, taste and be charges $16 for it. We ordered some flatbread special which was OK, but not crunchy more like soft and wet. Meat balls were good and croquetas were fine.
But soo over prices for what you get. If the food was taste I wouldnt mind the prices, but food fast not good at all.
We didnt finish most of it and no one really bothered asking how was the food.
Anyhow, I will most definitely not go there nor recommend anyone going there!
Socarrat has lost their standards when it comes to food. I’ve been here many times (and other locations as well) and have always enjoyed the food. I would like to think they were having a bad night but it’s hard to swallow that with a $500 bill. I also didn’t care for our aggressive waiter.
I love Socarrat!! The best place for Tapas! They are so friendly and accommodating.
They were so wonderful...they even gave me dessert on the House bc I am a loyal customer 😍
Socarrat is a very authentic Spanish restaurant experience. We shared the Tortilla Espanola and the pan con tomate. Both tasted as we remembered them in Spain. Delicious. We had the seafood paella with mussels and shrimp. Amazing. And we loved how they scraped the pan at the end so we could enjoy the socarrat at the bottom. The service was excellent, too. An authentic meal in an intimate setting.
Great happy hour at the bar.
Always delicious! We were exhausted and celebrating our daughter’s wedding (being over!) and they sent over complimentary sparkling wine. We always order “extra crispy” and the socarrat was delicious. A favorite of ours
The tapas selections were excellent. Good service. Ambiance was lacking. Long rows of high top tables.
Food is the highlight here as well as the service. Not for an intimate gathering.
The signature dish was not great. It was just ok. Very disappointing.
Fabulous paella of the day! Sangria pretty delicious too
10th wedding anniversary. We’ve been coming here for 6yrs and counting. Food and drinks are consistently excellent, along with the wonderful wait staff. Here’s to many more!
Shrimp was over cooked to the point it was mushy... we worked through it. Then we saw two mice hanging out— running bAck and forth across the floor. Nice spot but more than likely wouldn’t go back— super over priced for what you get.
The first time I visited the restaurant I was amazed by the paella served. This time I was disappointed; the rice was too soft (too much broth left) with no flavor and aside for the lobster, the rest of the seafood included in the paella was also flavorless. Not worth the money spent in my opinion.
Just happened upon this place while visiting NYC. Great paella and a really cool vibe, incredible service. If you like paella you can't go wrong with Socartat!
This is absolutely the best Pailella that I have ever had. If you like Pailella, this is the restaurant to eat it in
The place is small and intimate so it is very nice. The food is fantastic. The room was pretty warm for most of the time we were there, but we asked them to adjust the air and they did. Great after work place to go. Not sure it is a date place though.
Our server, Andres, was wonderful. Took the time to make thoughtful recommendations. The server assistants and timing of dishes was on point - for 4 people with wine, water glasses, tapas plates, then paella... a table can feel overcrowded. They did a superb job with keeping things bussed and clean. The food was outstanding. Definitely a little pricey ($100/person with 2 bottles of wine. Plenty of tapas and 2 servings of paella). But a very enjoyable experience. Free dessert was much appreciated and delicious.
Food is pretty good but Service is horrible. I would not recommend going there solely.
Dear Firstfisitnyc, Thank you for taking the time to review your dining experience at Socarrat. We take a lot of pride in what we do and thrive to provide a wonderful overall experience to all of our guests. If possible, please write to firstname.lastname@example.org with time and date you dined with us and details of what made your experience horrible. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Best wishes, Socarrat Management
Black rice and Socarrat paella were good. Prices steep. Ambiance casual trendy. Small venue all communal table seating.
As always Socarrat never disappoints. The service was great and they never rush us as we like to stagger our dishes so not everything comes out at once.
If you are looking for authentic Spanish food, this is the place to go in Manhattan!
Delicious food, reasonable price (~$30/person for Paella), good drink options as well. Not a huge amount of space, but actually seemed like a good thing because it limited the amount of people and overall amount of noise so that we could converse without having to yell. Was able to get a reservation a few hours out on a Friday night, highly recommended.
The paella was awful! This was a sorry excuse for a restaurant specializing in paella. Just pre-cooked pans of rice with toppings thrown on according to order and heated through. I will never eat here again.
Dear NancyC, Thank you for taking the time to write your review. I am really sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your experience at Socarrat. However, I would like to let you know that we never precook Paellas and we always prepare them from scratch to order, each Paella has different ingredients and cooking methods. This is the reason why our Paellas take between 25-30 minutes to cook. Hopefully we can welcome you any time soon. Best regards, Socarrat Management
The paella is great and ambience is casual. I really enjoyed my dinner.
Fun and vibrant atmosphere, delicious food and great service. Wonderful for a group!
They were amazing and we loved the whole experience.
Good food, attentive service & nice atmosphere. Paella was very good - it was difficult getting everyone to agree (paella was for 2 minimum). Churros were not up to par (too thin & crisp, not enough dough). Drinks were very good
Very good food and nice selection of paella. I would have hoped for more tapas options.
We had never been there before and our waiter was very patient with us while I picked out a bottle of wine I liked. The food was beyond delicious! At the end of the meal we were served a glass of bubbly wine that I loved so much our waiter went out of his way to write the name of it down for me. It was not so loud that you could not hear yourself speak, this is def one of my new fave spots! Highly recommend. Keep up the amazing job! You really made our date night special!
