Socarrat Paella Bar - Chelsea
Socarrat, the quintessence of the perfect paella and for which the restaurant is named, is the delectable, sensuous crust that forms on the bottom of the paella pan when the liquid is rendered and the rice reaches its peak of succulence. The menu, an authentic array of delicious dishes from the regions of Spain specializing in traditional tapas with an accent on paella and fideua (which substitutes fried noodles for rice) that can be characterized as a true exploration for the palette.
Socarrat Paella Bar Chelsea's ambiance denotes feelings of warmth, comfort and hospitality. A neighborhood staple with a small, intimate space comprised primarily of one large communal table with bar and smaller communal tables available.
**Please note that all of our tables at the Chelsea location are high tops with stool seating, with a combination of communal and private tables.**

The hi-top tables are perfect for the setting - our waiter seemed to be handling a lot that evening and he was slow to take drink orders but over the night the service ended up being great. This was our second visit and we thought the paella on the first visit was much hotter and more to our liking. The paella was very tasty both nights. Our bill ended up being really high due to all the specialty cocktails we ordered but overall the food prices are decent... some of the high tops for 6 seem to be shared once in a while as the whole restaurant is not that big...
Issue preventing a higher rating is that I was charged $5 PER cup of coffee at BRUNCH! It's absurd not to refill a relatively small coffee cup at brunch and charge an additional $5.
Other than that we enjoyed the food, particularly the huevos a la flamenca. Service was slow with only significant issue trying to pay the bill as we had to leave due to the time.
Phenomenal. The absolute perfect place to do a birthday dinner or enjoy a fun evening out with friends.
Finally! Real paella and sangria in NYC! The fried artichokes and shisito peppers were perfect tapas to start before we dug into our Paella con Mariscos.
calm ambiance with unusual seating at first which you get used to it. Socarrat is an intimate setting, almost in a family style vibe which you get used to almost immediately as soon that first cup of sangria sets in. every appetizer is made with love along with the pella which is an understatement. the paella is crisped to the perfect “socarrat” and takes you back to authentic catalan cuisine. highly recommend this location. can’t wait to try the remaining locations.
If this were a true Spanish Tapas Bar, it would not have so many fried tapas and it would have offered a small portion paella.
My favorite Chelsea restaurant. The paella is always worth the trip, and the tapas menu is very special too. The wait staff know the food choices very well, always take their suggestions. Cocktails are too expensive for what you get and the wine pours are stingy but that’s the only criticism.
The food was great and service was also good; but I just felt like I was being rushed. Also it was super noisy. Music was loud so it felt like people had to yell to be heard which made the place even more noisy. Aside from that it was a nice place.
This place was long and narrow space but comfortable and nice. The food & service was generally great but I didn’t like that the winter prix fixe/restaurant week more economical priced menu wasn’t brought automatically with the main menu. I had to specifically ask for it which the bartender had showed me upon Arriving but the waiter did not. So be sure to ask if they have any special prix fixe menus available concurrently with the main menu.
Also, by the time we were done...we were one of the last two tables left and it was after 10pm so they kept signaling us to pay our check and leave. They came over multiple times to ask for payment, they started turning up and flicking the lights in and off at the end which was so obviously obnoxious. I guess they were in a rush to close up on a Thursday night. So if you go, go earlier snd be out by 10!
For years this used to be one of my favorite places in Chelsea, but no longer. Despite having reserved (and re-requested by phone) a private table for two, they tried to seat us at a communal table, and then a sharwed table. I argued and finally won., but should I have to argue? This has happend three times now. Appetizers were very good, but the paella simply isn't what it used to be. There was nothing moist about the rice. I love the crispy part, but this was shallow and crispy through and through--it looked like is was 1/2 inch high. No kidding. We ordered the special--a duck and asparagus paella--with an incredibly bland taste. I was really surprised. I guess this happens all too often when a restaurant becomes popular. I used to relish going here; I won't return. What a shame!
My party of 8 have a wonderful evening at Socarrat this past Saturday. It was a birthday celebration for a dear friend and she had a great time as did the rest of us! The food was delicious fresh and the portions were ample. The service was 1st rate and it's a very appealing venue. My only reservation would be to say that the space is very tight . If you are a large person or a person with disabilities, the high chairs are both difficult to climb into and feel secure in, as well as a little uncomfortable to perch in for a long period. But that being said... even with that caviat, I would highly recommend Socarrat to any one looking to enjoy great food, great service and a wonderful evening!
We met at Soccarat for our Bookclub meetup. It was great to order and be able to share with the table. The specials for the night were amazing! We were able to face one another at the table and discuss the book title with ease.
I was taking someone to lunch and was truly embarrassed by the experience, The restaurant during lunch was totally empty except for us. The food is extremely expensive. We went there for paella but the pricing on paella was per person so it would have cost us over $40.00 just for paella. The waiter was totally disinterested in us and his job.
The food was excellent. My anchovy appetizer was superb. The food were flaky, tender and flavorful. The traditional paella was excellent. The seafood was really well cooked. Maybe a bit pricy.
Our server, Alex, was awesome! Always there when we needed him but not overbearing. I 1000% recommend getting the scallops tapas! They were cooked perfectly with such great flavor- and I’m very picky with my scallops since they’re my favorite food. Obviously, the paella was spectacular. We had the seafood and carne for the table. We will certainly be added this restaurant to our regular rotation.
This is one of our go to places near Chelsea. We take friends there. Many have never been before. Always consistent and the taste is out of this world.
Family dinner with our 3yr ild
Excellent tapas and paella in small intimate setting. I can see how it may get a little crazy when packed but my girlfriends and I had a lovely time Monday eve.
good food. I am on a plant based diet now, and the server was versed in options which was helpful.
We LOVE this neighbor hood gem! Be ready to enjoy the energy of a communal table with fabulous food and wine. Ask for the original room and get ready for a fun night.
Very good food
Servers were very attentive to everything
Paella is perfect for sharing with groups! The service and drinks were stellar as well!
The tapas and paella are always terrific. Sangria is really good too, though a little pricey. Overall a great time.
I love everything about this restaurant! The atmosphere, the service, the cruising! Fabulous!!!
Wonderful evening... again. The food is outstanding - the lobster paella was off the charts. They do everything right
For the many years we have been coming to Soccarat, it has always been a pleasure and fun! The food is wonderful and the service is great. Soccarat catering has also catered some Holiday parties for me and that has just been great!
Always a pleasure!
Totally overpriced for what you're getting
LOVE this place -delicious, authentic and a lot of fun!
Birthday ! Food was amazing!
rice was hard.
Absolutely delicious food, will definitely be back. Good for large groups too.
Fantastic experience. Gorgeous food from tapas to paella. We had a group of 8—cannot recall a finger meal and perfect ambiance.
I came here for brunch. The food was amazing and our waiter was efficient and charismatic. The ambiance is great. Would definitely come again.
Nice place - highly recommended!
Our three paellas (meat, lamb, and lobster) were delicious and the staff was attentive.
So, so good! The tapas and paella are delicious! The staff are friendly & accommodating. We celebrated an aunt's birthday with a group of 7 (including a toddler) - most of which were from out of town and hadn't been to Socarrat before, and everyone loved it. Highly recommended!!
The service was not attentive and was awkward. Would stay away from this location.
Delicious food, great service, very welcoming atmosphere. Definitely coming back !
