Socarrat Paella Bar - Chelsea
**Please note that all of our tables at the Chelsea location are high tops and most of them are communal tables and our chairs are without backs.**
Socarrat, the quintessence of the perfect paella and for which the restaurant is named, is the delectable, sensuous crust that forms on the
bottom of the paella pan when the liquid is rendered and the rice reaches its peak of succulence. The menu, an authentic array of delicious dishes from the regions of Spain specializing in traditional tapas with an accent
on paella and fideua (which substitutes fried noodles for rice) that can be characterized as a true exploration for the palette.
Socarrat also offers two dozen tapas, wines by the glass, Spanish desserts, and the bes

What Insiders Are Saying
No bigger than a subway car, Socarrat packs the majority of their patrons on bar stools around a communal table. The idea here is that they do paella the way it's done in Spain, as one big family. In such a small space, keeping the drool inside your mouth while you wait for your food is no easy task.
Loved the food and service. The seating was horrible
Hands down best paella in NYC. Great service and home-like atmosphere.
The atmosphere was very nice. Decor was great, we sat at the high table that faced the outside with the windows open so we had beautiful scenery. The service was great, the food was very good. The only negative was that we had the brunch that came with bottomless mimosas for a specific time - only 90 minutes. Our champagne glasses were empty longer than we would've liked & had to keep asking for refills. But other than that we enjoyed ourselves, the service was great & the food - wow.....I went with the chicken paella (hold the sausage) & it was incredible. Came out in a cast iron pot on a wooden pallet with mitten holders. Excellent dish!
Loved it. VERY friendly and accommodating. I have lived in Spain and enjoyed an authentic experience
Came here for my partner's and my six year anniversary. The staff was so kind, making sure that we got the bottle of sparkling wine we had specially requested to share at the table, and consistently checking in with us to make sure that everything exceeded expectations. While the paella is meant to be the star of the meal, I would highly recommend parties of more than one take advantage of the great tapas selection, in particular the fried artichoke and the pan con tomate.
Great food, great service helped make for a great evening out.
This is my favorite place, I feel at home at Chelsea's Socarrat! The food, drinks and especially the staff are extraordinary! The tapas are perfect, so is the paella. The red Sangria is to die for! I just adore all of it!
This place is expensive, the food quality is average, and the service was poor. They impose additional discomfort on diners with the "high top" seating, which might be fine for a quick bite, but the kitchen takes quite a long time to produce the paella that seems to be popular here. The community table means that the noise level is high. In the end, however, it is the average food and poor quality wines (both the seafood paella and the gazpacho appetizer were off the mark and two different wines were pretty poor) that was most disappointing.
We LOVE Socarrat. We come in 2-3 times a month (sometimes more)
Best Paella in town, the tapas are amazing, great wine list, cocktails, the service is outstanding and we always feel welcomed and at home. I cant recommend this place enough!
We had an amazing meal and overall experience here! Loved it!
Food was not nearly as good as on prior to visits. We had to wait a long time for our paella which came out as nearly all rice.
Made a reservation last week which was restaurant week. Food was declicious, my wife and I had cod croquettes and dates wrapped in bacon as appetizers, for the main course we had the paella of the day. It was outstanding. Walking distance from the High Line, which is a must see for any tourist. The service was very good as well. Quiet place during the day, don't know about the night though.
The attention to detail has gone slightly downhill, or maybe it was just because it was restaurant week.
This is my first open table review. Save your money and time. You will probably have a better dining experience anywhere else.
Went because we were craving paella and we were NOT disappointed. The sangria, tapas and paella were all excellent and the service was great. Nice atmosphere, we actually felt like we were back in Barcelona. Definitely going back the next time we’re having a paella craving!
Authentic and delicious paellas and tapas. Perfect to share with friends - makes for a really social meal. Special place with wonderful and friendly staff. The crunchy bottom of the paellas and hence the restaurant name is worth coming here for - nothing like it...
The vibe was nice but they need to bring the beef pinchos back. Best thing that was on the menu.
It was good for restaurant week but I don’t know if I would go back otherwise
I’ve been here several times and it’s consistently good food and service.
Brought my staff for lunch. Their price fixed menu had many choices on it. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely will go back.
Always fantastic paella, my guests (visiting NY) said it was the best they have had. We enjoyed the txakolina rose wine by the glass so much, ended up ordering a bottle for dinner, it paired well.
Had the chorizo and the gambas for appetizers. Very good. Paella was nice maybe a bit burnt at the bottom good size and desserts were disappointing, waiter told us coconut was the sorbet of the day and it was lemon and the churros tasted like food. They should use a different pot of oil for churros my guess is that they using same fryer as savory food. Also They should be thicker so they won’t get too crispy and dry. I will come back again when is not restaurant week to try other items.
Terrific little neighborhood bar/restaurant. Go for the paella. Several different varieties. All very delicious and authentic. Best since visiting Valencia. Wait staff will scrape the pan so you can enjoy the tasty crusty morsels. Yum! Glass of red wine. What more can you ask for?
They only had high top tables available with shared sitting, so the arrangement became a bit awkward as our table had two teams of three.
The tapas were good overall, but their main dish, a seafood paella, took over an hour to come out and was undecooked! Shrimps, clams and scallops were all undercooked and mushy. One of the clams I ate was pretty much raw and I had to deal with stomach issues with the next two days.
That said, the waiter was really nice so I am giving a positive review based on service.
The food was creative and pretty good, however the portions are very small and the price can easily add up. I would definitely come back to try the paella. By far it seems like the best value and their specialty (duh, it's in their name)
Everything was ... fine. Octopus, flank steak skewers, chorizo, croquettes. Nothing stood out. Food temp was a bit lacking when served. Place is a bit understaffed with one waiter/bartender and one busser in a large back room.
Better Spanish food in nyc (try El Porron maybe)
The most amazing paella in NYC... not to mention the delicious Sangria! I would recommend this restaurant over and over and over again.
Our first time at this restaurant and it was a great choice. Was recommended from the staff at the Colonial House Inn a couple of blocks away and we were glad we went. The sangria was very good and the tapas we tried - one with Shrimp and one with chorizo - both spot on. We had one paella - the Socarrat Paella and it was tremendous -- a massive portion. We'll be back!!
Classic Paella Bar with excellent food
I have been here twice; on both occasions I was going to a show at the Joyce Theatre, less than a block away. The food is really good. There were three of us and we ordered paella for 2 and it was still more than enough, although we also had some tapas first. I will go here again.
Delicious paella. I was dragged there because my Spanish coworker was shocked to find out that I didn't like paella. He told me I just hadn't had it at the right place. He was right. Absolutely great food and friendly staff!
Staff were extremely nice, and the food was mostly good. My friend thought the paella was slightly salty, but I thought it was ok. They gave us a flan for bday celebration. Very nice experience.
Tasty food, fun vibe but a little loud at times. Nice enough invite friends and colleagues for a special occasion but moderate prices and casual/cozy atmosphere are all conducive to put this spot on our regular list!
Loved the food....
Loved everything about this dining experience. Food and staff were awesome! I will definitely revisit.
Totally delicious tapas served in a nice atmosphere. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. The cocktails were inventive and tasty. Not cheap, but not overpriced for the overall quality.
Soccarat is a great place to share small plates with friends. The food is well prepared and nicely presented. The service was excellent, although it was not very crowded so hard to say if this is the norm on a busy night. We had the grilled artichokes, grilled Brussels sprouts, chorizo, tuna, and bruschetta and loved them all. I have gone to Soccarat before and shared paella but I found that overpriced for what it is and not the same quality as the tapas. But clearly the paella is very popular. Wine list has some good wines at reasonable prices. All in all, a wonderful meal at a very appealing restaurant.
I invited couple of friends for dinner at Soccarat because I love the food. Sadly, by the end of the evening my friend spotted a mouse right by out table. Needles to say, it ruined the experience that we had.
This restaurant has excellent paella. I love it here! Having said that, the service was absolutely disappointing from the get go. I've never experienced it like this before but the host was unfriendly. Didn't even say hello as we walked in. The server was unfriendly and unhelpful when I asked for him to scrape the paella. He didn't. The service was slow too. I am hoping this was a random experience.
Great spot to celebrate our daughter’s birthday...especially because she is a foodie and loves Spanish food!
