Socarrat Paella Bar - Chelsea
Socarrat, the quintessence of the perfect paella and for which the restaurant is named, is the delectable, sensuous crust that forms on the bottom of the paella pan when the liquid is rendered and the rice reaches its peak of succulence. The menu, an authentic array of delicious dishes from the regions of Spain specializing in traditional tapas with an accent on paella and fideua (which substitutes fried noodles for rice) that can be characterized as a true exploration for the palette.
Socarrat Paella Bar Chelsea's ambiance denotes feelings of warmth, comfort and hospitality. A neighborhood staple with a small, intimate space comprised primarily of one large communal table with bar and smaller communal tables available.
**Please note that all of our tables at the Chelsea location are high tops with stool seating, with a combination of communal and private tables.**

What Insiders Are Saying
No bigger than a subway car, Socarrat packs the majority of their patrons on bar stools around a communal table. The idea here is that they do paella the way it's done in Spain, as one big family. In such a small space, keeping the drool inside your mouth while you wait for your food is no easy task.
Food and service was amazing and even brought out an amazing dessert for a birthday! Definitely will be back!
Small place with only high top tables. Food is just average. Ridiculously expensive.....$19. For a very small margarita! No tapas for less than $15. 2 drinks and 3 tapas for $90. Better places for tapas with great food and better value.
Great food... absolutely recommended. Don’t skip on the starters. Worth the extra money.
I dined here on a Friday afternoon. I had the Sangria which wasn't to die for as many had made it seem. It was sweet but had no kick. I ordered the Octopus w/mashed potatoes. The potatoes were hot and fresh and the octopus was barely to a warmed up temperature. I had the brussel sprouts that were burnt to a crisp and the Carne Paella that was also beyond burnt and dry(and the server came over and touched our food w/o permission and scraps the dish to get all the burnt edges mixed into the meal). The portion for the paella was a pretty small and thin layer compared to other restaurants. My guest and I were one of two tables at the time we sat down and one of four tables by the time we ordered. So the fact that everything was burnt when I know for a fact that there weren't many orders going to the kitchen made it difficult to accept. Instead of being angry patrons we opted to be the silent customers, aka the customers who never return.
I love this place. Always enjoy the food and the ambiance. Recommend this to anyone who is looking for a quiet spot with good food, good spirits and a place to be relaxed and be heard!
Good food, ambience and knowledgeable staff.
The selection of music could be a bit improved with more current Spanish music.
Delicious brunch and great atmosphere
Enjoyed our visit but I wouldn’t recommended for an intimate dinner due to the noise level
Good service & food, a bit loud for me & prefer regular tables not high tops
Food was amazing. Very authentic. The flavors were spectacular. Sangria was the best I’ve had.
Such a great choice for dinner before a performance at the Joyce.
Great sangria, tapas were also delicious
Enjoyed the romantic ambience and our server was awesome
Not a real paella, ingredients are just floating on the top of the pan as decoration but they don't really give any flavor to the dish. Disappointed
The paella was amazing! The space is a little tight and the party of people next to us were a little loud, however it was all worth it!
Now my favorite paellas in NY! Very creative and very different from a traditional paella, but has that blending of flavors that is characteristic. I would never have thought of putting lamb chops in paella, but the dish was extraordinary. The soft sell crap appetizer and almond ice cream also standouts.
Good ambience in this quaint restaurant, food tasty, expensive and portions size not that large.
The food is just delicious. Make sure you’re ok with communal dining—one long table. It wasn’t a problem though.
Paella was dry and rice was overcooked. Menu was very limited and ordering paella requires ordering a 2 person order so eating at the paella bar becomes very costly.
I have been to all 3 Socarrat locations, they do serve pretty good tapas and paella. The service varies but overall okay. However, this Chelsea location was my least enjoyable experience among all.
We had a reservation for 4ppl. The seating (small high table by the bar) was tight to begin with, and they asked us to even squeeze in more so ppl can walk through the narrow space between our table and the seatings at the bar. We tried and sat at the table for a few minutes debating to stay or go. Since it’s a Friday night and might not be easy without reservation somewhere else, we decided to stay put.
The table was just too small to fit all the drinks, and the food we ordered. It was uncomfortable and we didn’t quite enjoy the meal. At the end we chose to opt out on dessert to have it somewhere else.
Excellent dinner date option restaurant. Or any other ocasion.😉
Food is fantastic. Reservation process is not clear that the high top tables are communal. Wouldn’t have gone if we had known tables were communal. Very awkward....
I’ve been to Socarrat four times now, and the service is very good, as is the food. The prices are quite high and for parties of three you may end up sitting at a shared communal high top table. At this price point I don’t find communal tables to be acceptable. I have mixed feelings about going back again.
Dear Good, Thank you for taking the time to write your review, we really appreciate your feedback. We are very happy to hear your overall experience was good and you enjoyed our food and service. Looking forward to welcoming you again soon. Have a wonderful day! Socarrat Management
Over priced paella and ok service makes this place poor value. $30 per person for small sized paella with burnt seafood. Save your money and go elsewhere.
Dear Nick, We are really sorry to hear of your unpleasant experience at Socarrat. We use the best product and thrive to meet all of our customers expectations. We would appreciate this appreciations had been made on site so something could have been done to fix the problem. However, we appreciate your time to write the review and will pass on the comments to the team as we always try to improve. Hopefully we can welcome you again soon and make your trip worth it! Every bite is delicious, and every member of the staff wonderful!
I love socarrat. Best paella in nyc hands down
Been going to this location for several years now, outstanding service all around...10 out of 10
Had 5 different tapas dishes and they all were mediocre / missed the spot. Think place is not as good as it used to be. Go to Boqueria instead.
Nice variety and quality tapas. We were so satisfied that we were satisfied without one of the many paellas
Super uncomfortable bar stool seating only. Tables too close together, dark depressing in back. Nice waiters.
Amazing food and service. Just know its communal seating mostly so you will be sitting next to strangers. I did not know that coming in and felt awkward at first. But everything was amazing and will definitely go again!
Never again! Don’t go if you are claustrophobic or can hear like a normal human. Take your chances if you are deaf. The tables are long planks and you play elbow tag with your neighbors. Your “space” is about 20” wide .When your tapas come, you can’t even tell whose dishes these are for, that’s how small your space is..Want to know everything about the lives of 6-8 people around you, come here. It’s expensive too. 3 tiny plates of food was 50. We wolfed down our food just so we could leave as fast as possible. We will NEVER Go back.
The food was very good, especially the appetizers.
Food was good our waiter was great until he told us....we MAY have to share our table WHAT are you serious of 6 it was four of us, this had me feeling rushed and ready to go!! horrible rule/customer service NEVER EVER coming back if this is there bright idea of getting people to spend their $$$ & rush down their food GOAL ACCOMPLISHED but i will not recommend this restaurant BIG TURN OFF.
W've been to Socarrat's Chelsea location over 20 times, this last visit wasn't the best paella we've had there. I'm hoping it was just an off night.
A great find. Service was excellent and all the food was fresh and tasty. Great wine selection. Didn't try the paella but every table around us did and it looked fantastic. Have to come back and try it!
Thank you Erin!! It was lovely to have you here and I will pass on your comments to our team. Looking forward to your next visit!! Best wishes, Eduardo - GM
The bottomless brunch was a great value and the food was excellent. Looking forward to adding Socarrat into the Sunday brunch rotation.
Food is very expensive and not that well-prepared. Service is excellent.
Fantastic food! Great service! Try the seafood dishes and don't forget the grilled octopus!
