Socarrat, the quintessence of the perfect paella and for which the restaurant is named, is the delectable, sensuous crust that forms on the bottom of the paella pan when the liquid is rendered and the rice reaches its peak of succulence. The menu, an authentic array of delicious dishes from the regions of Spain specializing in traditional tapas with an accent on paella and fideua (which substitutes fried noodles for rice) that can be characterized as a true exploration for the palette.

Socarrat Paella Bar Chelsea's ambiance denotes feelings of warmth, comfort and hospitality. A neighborhood staple with a small, intimate space comprised primarily of one large communal table with bar and smaller communal tables available.

**Please note that all of our tables at the Chelsea location are high tops with stool seating, with a combination of communal and private tables.**

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.8

No bigger than a subway car, Socarrat packs the majority of their patrons on bar stools around a communal table. The idea here is that they do paella the way it's done in Spain, as one big family. In such a small space, keeping the drool inside your mouth while you wait for your food is no easy task.

Ratings 7.5-8.0:These are restaurants that are reliable, tasty, and particularly good for whatever we have deemed them “Perfect For.” Hit up a 7.7 for Date Night with confidence, as long as you don’t need the restaurant to be the most interesting thing that happens that night.

The appetizers and paellas were very good, and the service was outstanding. The ambience was very nice. I thought the price of a pitcher of the very weak sangria at $48 was quite overpriced. I would recommend Socarrat to others.

The environment is nice, we went there on a Sunday. We order a paella with shrimp and scallops, the rice were a bit salty. I also ordered a rośe sangria, which was pretty nice with a sweet sstrawberry taste.

I liked the atmosphere and the service was great. I suspect my issue with the food was limited the special I ordered, so I will likely try it again and update my review if appropriate.

I ordered the duck paella special. It was served as a paella dish with pieces of duck breast laying on top of the rice. It was clear that the duck was placed on the paella after the paella was cooked -- I guess you have to do that to avoid overcooking the duck.

The duck was rare for my taste, very tough and I didn't feel like there was enough to justify the price of $38/serving. The paella was just warm (not hot) and even the pan was just warm to the touch, so it was clearly made in advance. The taste was fine, but I felt like I didn't get a good value.

The rice was so burnt! The seafood was fresh however the rice was too burnt that we couldn't taste the crispy part.

The food was very good. It gets pricey quickly if you are having appetizers and paella. I would definitely recommend. I'm not a fan of shared tables but we sat with a very nice group.

Great food, great atmosphere, great "socarrat" on the two paellas we got. My only issue is the waiter recommending an expensive appetizer we didn't need. After we finished ordering, he said "2 appetizers is very little for 4 people - you should get one of the specials". We followed his advice and ended up unable to finish either paella at the end. This is a testament to their healthy portion sizes, but since paellas have a crispy bottom, they are not nearly as good when reheated, which the waiter should've known. The waitstaff's goal should be to give diners a great experience, not sell them things they don't need. Other than that, I would highly recommend this restaurant.

We went on a Saturday evening at 6pm, and we were pleasantly surprised to find out that they have a happy hour on all tapas dishes and drinks.
Loved it!!

I don’t live in New York so I personally wouldn’t come back. to this restaurant but I would recommend it. The food was good. I didn’t expect to be sitting at a high top table. I’m short and that’s not too comfortable for me. I prefer sitting at a table with just the people in my party and here you shared your table. The appetizers were quite delicious. We ordered the seafood paella for our main dish for 3. Plenty of food. Quite expensive though. Delicious drinks and yummy dessert.

BEST meat paella on the planet! Really great tapas; chorizo, fried calamari, pork belly (was a special) fried artichokes, garlic shrimp. All delish. Excellent white sangria. Friendly staff. Kinda noisy. Hi-top seating only and stools are a little uncomfortable. But worth a trip from ANYWHERE for the carne paella.

Everything was very good. We did end up showing up 10 minutes late and the hostess told us that she was about to give away our table, that wasn’t very nice. The waiter was excellent and the food was very good, the Paella was not as great as I will would’ve expected

I have been going to this restaurant for long time, the service is inconsistent, and lately the food as well. I always order the same Meat Paella, and last time it was made differently, without some of the normal ingredients.

A friend and I just came back from Barcelona and wanted to relive our sangria and paella meals. The food was exceptional (Socarrat paella), but the staff asked us so many times about ordering, it made us feel rushed out. The place was full, so I understand, but it took away from our dinner!

Was craving paellas after watching a cooking show and this place did not disappoint! the Tapas were just as good as their paellas. When the paellas came out, it was a mix of crunchy and soft and the seasoning was on point. Also all of their desserts were homemade. Literally everything was really good, would recommend and come back again!
