Socarrat Midtown East Ratings and Reviews
Absolutely the worst Spanish restaurant I have ever been in. Beware menu prices are inaccurate Paella is listed as per order when in fact it is per person charge and they will charge you double the listed price as you must order 2 of the same. This is clearly fraud which I wouldn't mind if the food was any good. $72 for a 1.25 lb overcooked lobster with burnt rice --- just plain wrong !!!
Food was great. Six of us got four orders of paella and tapas and still have some leftover paella to take home. First time I tried their karne paella and thought it was just delicious. Also enjoyed the gambas that had a little kick and the brussels sprouts tapas. Try if you havent been there. I will definitely return.
We were attracted to the $25 lunch, but then saw there were more interesting options on the dinner menu and ordered from there. We shared a few of the small plates and then two kinds of paella - one with mixed seafood and one with beef, sausage and chicken. Everything was very good and the service was friendly. The venue is surprisingly small and must get crowded when it isn't warm enough to sit outside. We might try a different location next time.
The rice in the paella was to die for. So full of flavor it was absolutely stunning. Which is why it was so surprising that the lobster was soft and mushy, and the scallops, shrimp and calamari were totally tasteless. The rice had the perfect crunchy crust around the edges and was moist and yummy in the middle. So...I ate the rice and picked out the fish. But $39 is a lot to spend on a dish of rice no matter how yummy it is, when you have to pick out the seafood.
Met a business colleague for lunch and sat outside on 2nd Avenue to enjoy the lunch prix fixe menu. While the price appears steep ($25/person), it includes an appetizer, main (including some of the paellas) and a dessert. My colleague had the bacon wrapped, cheese stuffed dates and I had the gazpacho (Andalusian-style) as appetizers, we shared the paella of the day (made as one large dish) and both had flan for dessert. We had excellent friendly service that was helpful but not intrusive and great food. My only quibble about the food was the gazpacho lacked any texture at all - I make an Andalusian-style gazpacho that I think is enhanced by some finely-minced ingredients stirred into it.
The food was great, I sat outside as it was quite busy - apparently they have a happy hour that draws a crowd, but that didn't impact the excellent service or the food I ordered arriving quickly to my table (I ordered several tapas). Finished my meal without feeling rushed with a drink and coffee. As a side note people walking by on the sidewalk commented on how delicious the squid looked that I was gobbling down👍
My college friends and I went to Spain together a few years ago and have been trying Spanish/tapas restaurants in NYC to try and find that genuine, authentic Spanish taste- and we found it here! Paella was amazing (we had squid ink & soccarat). Tasty sangria & great service!
We went here for a work get together dinner. We wanted to be outdoors and they have a nice outdoor balcony for dining. The food was good and service was very attentive. We shared several tapas and it was delicious. We will definitely go back again as everyone enjoyed the dinner.
Food was delicious . Waitress was attentive and gave us informative suggestions. Sangria was refreshing. We were upstairs by the balcony on a Thursday afternoon. We went to Socarrat during restaurant week. The regular menu had the food that we liked. Therefore, we ended up ordering from the regular menu. The lunch ended with a wonderful chat with a couple sitting next to us. They came from Philly.
