  • Neighborhood gem
  • Great for brunch
Smörgås Chef Restaurant serves up super fresh seafood and prime meats based on centuries of Scandinavian & European culinary traditions. Zagat Survey says Smörgås Chef is "a refreshing change of pace", and Village Voice claims the food is "Damn Good."

Smörgås Chef's authentic Swedish Meatballs with Lingonberries have become famous. The New York Post calls Smörgås Chef the "Swedish Meatball Mecca" of New York. Smörgås Chef has also become known for its roasted rack of lamb with a goat cheese Sherry sauce, and its oven-baked Cod from the Kenai Peninsula.

For lunch, you will find a smorgasbord of open-face Scandinavian sandwiches like Cold water Shrimp, Smoked Salmon with Egg & Chives, and Chicken Caramel with Norwegian goat cheese and asparagus. For weekend brunch, enjoy Scandinavian Baked Eggs with a chanterelle hollandaise, Eggs Benedict, Burgers, and Vanilla Waffles. The New York Times calls Smörgås Chef "a little treasure Downtown."

Normally I am very happy at SmorgasChef; I like the casual, clean-lined Scandinavian ambiance, the small, well-priced menu and the restaurant's convenience to Grand Central. But mostly I come because I LOVE the Gravlax, the restaurant's signature offering. There's a terrific sandwich that combines gravlax with chive-scrambled eggs. I dream of this sandwich. So, this week I arrived with a business friend who had never been to SmorgasChef, and I had touted the fabulous gravlax. We were there for the gravlax. So when the server arrived she immediately announced that, "Unfortunately, we are out of gravlax. We're very sorry." Apparently there was an event the previous day, and all the gravlax at SmorgasChef was consumed, and it would be two days until a new batch was ready. We ordered other things but all in all our lunch experience was incredibly disappointing.

There were two servers. The MALE server was exceptionally poor while the FEMALE server was very good.

One of the most delicious restaurants I've been to. I went here for my birthday with my fiancé. I had the herring trio, elderberry soda, roasted chicken with spinach and potatoes and the chocolate cake for dessert, it was fabulous. 5 stars! Keep up the great work!

We visited Scandinavia House for the first time and were very pleased. The décor is clean, fresh, and modern -- loved it! The menu has classic Scandinavian seafood and other items that have been modernized a bit. I had the Icelandic cod -- delicious. We had vacationed last year in Stockholm and Copenhagen and had hoped to enjoy some Swedish or Danish beer, but they were out of all the Scandinavian beers -- our only (small) disappointment.

The place is also affiliated with the Scandinavian Cultural Center. So it is a good place for lunch/dinner and entertainment afterwards. The food and the drinks are great. Overall, the place is very nice and modern.

Had dinner at Smorgas Chef during Restaurant Week. I'm from a Norwegian family and always wanted to try it out. It was a bit of a disappointment. It's basically a museum cafe that charges hefty restaurant prices. There are tablecloths and they dimmed the lights after 8 but it doesn't have restaurant atmosphere. I had the gravlax, Swedish meatballs, and a waffle/strawberry/whipped cream dessert. The gravlax was good and served with cold potatoes. The Swedish meatballs were fine but not significantly better than IKEA where they are about 1/4th the price. As for dessert, the strawberries were fresh and the whipped cream delicious but the waffle was limp. It wasn't a bad meal but it was very ordinary (except for the gravlax) and at $42 it was no bargain. You can get the exact same meal at Ikea for $10-12 and the difference in quality is minor. You just don't get the tablecloths there. If they brought their prices down this might be a nice place for lunch but regular price for this meal would be $48. I'm glad I tried the cafe but won't be going back.

Excellent spot for weekend brunch! Diverse selection of unique mimosas. The Swedish meatballs were light and delicious!
