For many years I have been a frequent visitor to all of the Jazz Clubs in NYC, and I really do mean all of them. Smoke is a tiny, intimate spot, and I like going there on the weeknights and sitting at the bar and have seen/head some excellent shows there over the years. This makes is affordable. I can't recommend going there on a weekend, however. Spending well over $200 for two people on a mediocre dinner from their prix fixe choices with one shared large beer, and a 40 minute set of music is simply not worth it to me. And the music was from one of my favorite performers, who doesn't play often in NYC, but the set was very short, and way too uninspired. I guess if you are a tourist with tons of money, or on an expense account and don't really care about the short set of music, this is the place for you. But if you want to seriously hear some music, have a decent meal, and similar classy ambiance, albeit at a more reasonable price, I would recommend Dizzy's and the Standard much more highly. I realize that they are larger venues and that Smoke needs to charge high prices because they don't do the volume needed to pay the rent, but those prices simply don't work for me. I hope that they pay their musicians well. I have no problem paying the $38 cover, which is fair, but I'd like more music for my $, especially if I am stuck buying an overpriced, small portioned, mediocre dinner.
Very good place to eat Sunday for a brunch, listening wonderful jazz music with Annet St. John! Just pay your meal and appreciate the jazz music!
The food was good but really nothing special (my lobster ravioli seemed like it had been frozen, bought from a grocery store),the beer we wanted was tapped, sangria was pretty but watery, BUT: really good music, a friendly, really great server, dim lighting in a cozy space and an unpretentious crowd made for a happy evening. This is the kind of place that will reinforce your mood: if you are primed to enjoy it, you will, but if you are cranky, you may find bones to pick at and will get annoyed when the bill arrives.
Great show. Delicious food. A special night with old friends and new.
Great jazz music!!
Food is so so but that’s not why you go there!
Note there is a $45 cover charge which you are not told about upfront. We arrived, were seated and the music stopped playing. We finished our drinks and asked for the cheque and saw a $45 per person charge had been added. For 20 mins of music that is a lot. I would only suggest if you’re a huge jazz fan. Staff were also fairly rude.
The manager was kind enough to waiver the $45 charge considering we were not even there for one drink before the music stopped however was a dampener on an otherwise great first night in NYC.
Enjoyed the evening. Jazz was great & the meal very tasty. Service fine. Can't find fault in Smoke & surprised by the unfavorable reviews.
To expensive. You can´t shoose the amount of money you want to spend. They have minimum for everything: consumption, tips. Besides all of this they charged twice in our credit card!!!!
The food was not great. The service very slow, at some point we asked ourselves if they had forgotten us... the music was great tho!
The music was great but at the end we were served a very surprising bill. They tacked on a hefty $45 per person cover charge and added the tip. Very disappointed!
