took two of my pals who had never been to UWS to see a show and have some drinks, they both loved it. it’s a great spot for jazz lovers.
Had a great time at Smoke. Will be back soon I'm sure!
One of the best live music spots in the city. The room is intimately cozy, the food is way above average (save room for the chocolate dessert pastry!). They cater to different musical tastes and are almost always full. So, check what's playing and when, then make a reservation. The audience is always quiet during the performances, and although food and drinks are served continuously, the wait staff is notably unobtrusive. There is a music charge - $40/person as of this writing. "Tarik", the person in charge of seating, is unbelievably accommodating, capable and personable.
Cozy Spot with good food. On this particular night, the Al Foster quintet brought the house down during the 1st set!
I might recommend it just to hear the music, but definitely not for a meal. The food was not great, especially for the high price charged. Not having the option to stay for a second set is also a negative.
Great food, Live Jazz Music and ambiance. Ribs and fried chicken are a must have.
Food was very good! I didn’t expect it would be so good. I had been craving fried chicken which can be not so good but this chicken was very, very good and lots of it. My only complaint is that they could have given you more collard greens.
music were world class... loved the place... will certainly come back
Although I rarely get uptown to hear music at Smoke, I always enjoy myself when I'm there. I'm not there for the food primarily, but for the music. The food is very good (at least my fish tacos were this time), the music charge on a Thursday night was more than reasonable, and the band was wonderful. For a music venue, the seating is comfortable, too. Of the major jazz clubs in the city, this is probably my favorite. And there always seems to be a very friendly vibe at Smoke.
The Food and service were excellent. The show presented was just about an hour long to short for the price that was charged.
We had a fantastic time here on our first night in NYC. We only had a couple of appetizers, drinks and desserts, but they were all well prepared. What we really came for was the music - which was amazing. The host that greated us was very welcoming which set the tone for the night. I will definitely come back here next time I am in the area.
It is a bit expensive, but we can accept it because the music is great. The real problem is that if you reserve a seat at the bar you have to pay not only 45$ as music charge but also you have to get drinks for 20$ at least. It would be better to charge 50 or 55 for the music and then leave the customer free about drinks.
Really good music, great seating but the food to greasy for our taste.
Smoke Jazz Club is an outstanding venue. It provides good service, food and music.
The information about the dining reservation is very limited, although I was advised that "most shows at Smoke are subject to a music charge and tickets should be purchased in advance", so we couldn't decide until we were sit at the table, taking into account that is about $90 dining+show (plus beverages, taxes, tips...).
The place is small, so you are going to have dinner close to the next tables, at both sides. The price for dinner is not too expensive and the meal is good, but when the show finishes you are kindly 'invited' to pay and leave your table for the next costumers.
It was impossible for us to make a reservation for five people, so we finally made two: one for four persons and another for two. When we inform to the manager about this, they arrange everything to put us together, very kindly.
I'm not used to listen jazz. I had the opportunity to enjoy a great show with Harold Mabern and his quartet (saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth). It worths every second of their music.
Service was not good, we received our food after everyone else had finished and while band was coming to end of show. Felt like we had to rush to complete meal before next group came in. Very disappointing especially being only black table there.
We did not know that the price of the concert 45 dollars has to be added to fixer price dinner. 100 dollars but you have to leave at 10. 30. It is not the french habit.
Great place to go for good food and swinging live jazz. Matradie is welcoming. Service is good.
Loved it!!!! Will be back :-)
Enjoyed the opportunity to meet and talk to Harold Manern.
Small club giving you a sense of intimacy and proximity with the band even though the diner format imposes to be very quiet.
Diner and set of 1hour, a bit short for the price but overall a nice evening.
Good food but surprisingly very small desert portions. “Macarons & éclairons” should not be plural on the menu as they were single units in the plate. :)
Best live jazz place in NYC with really good food. You can also get a CD for free though the autograph will cost you $20 and it is a package deal! :)
Excellent music. Very good sound. Great service and attention to visitors. Definitely recommended.
Awesome experience the bartenders were great, food is the best we have had at a Jazz club and the music was outstanding!
Overall, the food was good, though my drink was very weak. The vegetarian option was uninspired and much smaller portion than the other items on menu. Desserts were very good.
Fantastic jazz and food. Great service. Felt a bit rushed at the end of the show though for the next sitting. Would still go again and recommend.
It was a great evening and the music was superb
The service was lovely and the food was very good
Authentic jazz scene, mostly straight ahead and be-bop jazz, occasionally some fusion. Hosts many of the jazz scene's current and past greats in performance. Been here many times and it never disappoints. Nice and friendly ambience. Good table and bar service and surprisingly good food at reasonable prices. You'll find performing players around town at other places here listening to their contemporaries at the late night sets. The Smoke Sessions recording label offers many good selections from its stable of frequent star performers (Harold Mabern, Mike LaDonne, Eric Alexander, to name just a few). Smoke periodically offers up celebratory festivals, such as the current offering tribute to the jazz great John Coltrane.
I believe for the cost for music should be more than an hour. I have seen shows two hours apart and never seen a performance that short in the East Coast. It was a good performance and food was really good though
Music was good, but still it's kinda touritic rip off.
Our waitress was unkind.
Fantastic! We loved it! The food and the jazz! The service was excellent. I had the boulebaise (DP?). My wife had popcorn shrimp and the the ravioli. We also had an appetizer of smoked salmon!
Excellent experience through and through. Dinner was delicious, the service was on point, and the music (The Vincent Herring Quartet) was superb. This is a very small, intimate club. We stayed for two sets and after dinner were able to sit at the bar and speak with the very amiable musicians between sets. Dave Kikoski on piano was a special treat - he plays with such enthusiasm that he is simply a joy to listen to and watch perform.
Intimate and welcoming in a serious listening environment. Food pretty good and dining required
Great music. Very pricey wine. One of the best jazz joints in NY
Great music and great ambiance I just love this place and I have known it for 10 years and it has mot changed.
Music was awesome. Food average. Great atmosphere
Smokin jazz and terrific food!
Smoke is one of the best jazz venues in New York. Food better than most of the others, an intimate space that allows maximum focus on the excellent performers they get. I’ve been four times, on three different visits to this city, and it will be top of my list the next time I’m in town too.
Great space, music, atmosphere- just a perfect place to chill and enjoy great shows.
