I was here with 2 friends who happen to be African American and we were speaking just enough to hear each other when they immediately got singled out and asked to be silent as one lady complained. I felt so bad and it made my friends feel odd in a very “white” restaurant - not cool
Great attitude, service, graciousness, acoustics, sightlines, food, music. First-timer; won't be last! Superb experience.
We went to the 9:00 show, with 8:30 dinner reservations. We waited outside the door in a line, trying to avoid the water streaming from an air conditioner above the doorway. We didn’t step through the door until 8:30, which would have been okay if we were inside the air conditioning and had been sipping drinks at the empty bar. But we were denied entrance until everybody from the last show was out. Did not feel valued as a customer. Then ordering dinner was unusual—people who ordered after us were served before us. We didn’t get our food until 9:30, which allowed us 30 minutes to eat. We left feeling like this club was only smoking because it had burned out years ago. Server was great but space needs to be rethought.
Excellent music, service and food! I will surely back
SMOKE is a serious jazz club with good food. It's an intimate space, all seats are good and the programming is excellent. Lezlie Harrison on Wednesday nights is particularly great as she sings from the "Great American Soul Book."
Great Jazz music and dinner, We enjoyed very much, unforgettable experience !!
First time at this jazz club. Went for early show—small intimate setting, so there are no “bad seats.”
Great ambience! The food was outstanding! The singer michele walker was terrific along with her band! Great venue! Highly recommend this little jazz gem!
Good food but there's no substitution if you don't want something.
Overall experience was okay. There wasn't a hostess at the entrance to greet my party, and we stood for a few minutes looking for someone to seat us. The music was great, every seat gets a good view of the stage. The food was surprisingly bland despite its appealing presentation (and price). Definitely a good place to listen to jazz and maybe get one drink, only one.
This was our second trip to Smoke Jazz & Supper Club, the first was back in February. We are from out of town so when we come to NYC, we want to hear live music. This venue has that and a great menu to choose a nice meal from. They do offer a prix fixe option for 3 courses but we just wanted an entrée. Second time ordering the salmon (it was that memorable) and the beau had lobster ravioli. Both were great tasting and decent portions while not being overwhelming. Wine selections were more than adequate. Service was outstanding and staff extremely pleasant to us. Music charge is separate from the meal. I would recommend reservations in advance. It was packed this past Monday. A good value for your money and a nice, intimate place to see live music in NYC (Harlem area).
Great live jazz. Top ranked performers. Good food and ambiance.
Superb! Food and service were excellent, but the best part was the entertainment. World class!
Very good atmosphere in this restaurant to discover a jazz show.
a terrible experience, misleading maitre d' and we missed most of the great music. we arrived early and he seated us for an earlier set that was well into, but he said had just started. we could not listen to the music, being disturbed by wait-staff for a dinner we did not want. the worst: he would not let us stay for a second set and hassled our departure. so, we spent a fortune on music we barely heard. great music, terrible place.
We had a great time !
We were really disappointed and upset. I made a reservation to see Vincent Herring. He was not performing that night even though he was listed everywhere!!!!!! We were told that he was on tour!!!! That information should have been online!!!! We would have left but we had ordered food so we had to stay!!!
The food was terrible, very salted. We hated. There are so few options
My husband and I have visited Smoke repeatedly over the past seven years,, enjoying excellent live music in a cosy atmosphere. We visited again this past weekend, much anticipating the same flavor as that of past visits - our mot recent was two years ago. Although the interior of the small venue remained unchanged, and we were seated in our favorite spot right next to the band, the entire format of the club was different than what we previously experienced. Instead of being able to enjoy music sets throughout the evening, an elevated cover charge ($40pp) provided exactly one hour of music, whereupon guests were thanked for coming and the band was off again until a set much later in the evening. Our dinner reservation was for 6:30. We were served by 7:00 - at which time the band started - and were done with our meal at the same time that the band finished at 8:00. The next set did not start until 10, with the same cover. A later set (11:30) was advertised with a cover of $20. Dinner at our seating was a la carte, with (literally) a plate of arugula and 2 slices of orange and a sliver of onion priced at 17.00. My husband and son order the calamari appetizer which tasted "ok", but the bowls in which it came were packed with paper at the bottom, making the bowl look overflowing instead of shortchanged. The music was great, but the price was outrageous considering the limited experience, and the food was not impressive. We were disappointed and melancholy as this favorite spot of our is now a ruined memory.
An excellent evening. Coming from someone who has been to New Orleans and the evening show at @cotton club”. Out of many other reason of course.
Went alone as I was in the city. Sat at the bar, good service, food was nice ($45 three course menu with jazz ticket was better value than paying for insividual courses). Music was best bit.
Superb venue for fine jazz and dining in comfort. Top class service and musicians to accompany the food ad drink.
Love it great night club
One the best jazz club
Food great like you going to great restaurant in nyc.
Small so make reservations
What a great find, my sister who has frequented Smoke recommended we come here to meet up with a friend. We met an hour before dinner which gave # time to chat before eating and show. Lezlie Harrison was good, easy listening to and flexible ( when roof leaked ). The vibe was like being in someone’s house. It’s a bit confusing re prix fix vs a la cartel but I think the idea is that whatever you choose should equal $42. More or less.
The jazz venue is classic New York with the greatest living legends in the business cycling through on a regular basis and wonderful warm acoustics. Similar to many New York jazz clubs the food selection is meat-heavy with virtually no healthy options and nothing vegetarian but unfortunately the club required you to have dinner for every set but the late evening show. So come for the music and ambience, not the food.
Dine up close to some great live jazz performers in this small cozy UWS dinner club. Food and service were good and prices are good value during the week when music charges are only $15 compared to higher on the weekend. At our show the perfomer (vincent herring quartet) came around to sign copies of his CD.
I am a foreigner, I cannot understand all New Your circumstance, but really excellent jazz music and dinner not fit together. I am sorry but dinner music listening excludes each other.
The shoot of premium alcohol is exactly which fit together, doesn't matter how much money it costs.
Sorry for open opinion, I am from the Czech Republic, I visit New York for the first time and I will not afford the visit more than once or twice in my life, but New York jazz music experience was excellent. Thank you for an opportunity to listen Al Foster and David Williams live.
Wonderful Jazz Brunch, great service, food delicious, music was swinging. Hats off to the very attentive staff. Always worth the visit.
Make sure you understand they charge $10 for bottled water which is not on the menu as a charge. They ask if you would like it for your table and never offer a glass of regular tap water.
Was the best
I love this place!!! Because of the performances and the food!! I highly recommend it
Just don't go! Let me start by saying that the performers were excellent. Annette the vocalist really knows how to light up the room along side the amazing Jazz band. So if your in the mood for a night out maybe visit and just sit at the bar. THE FOOD IS AN ATROCITY. And now I understand why they earned a "B" rating which was much to my surprise when we first arrived. Bread arrived at my table with jam that I had not smeared on myself. How odd? And it wasn't a cute like muffin or biscuit where you'd be like, ok, maybe this was intentional. I honestly feel that they served me recycled bread. We were visiting for Mother's Day my mom had the pork chops, my husband had the strip steak, my son ordered a hamburger but really was torn because he was intrigued by tge prospect of chicken and waffles. I ended up ordering the chicken and waffles just so my son could partake. When the chicken arrived I could tell that it had been refried. All the pieces were not uniform in color one piece with light crispy golden looking and two other pieces were dark and hard. I couldn't even cut through it with a knife and when I resorted to a bite, I hurt my teeth. My husband's steak was ordered Med to Well. And it came out charred. The one thing that this place has going for it is the music. I can without a doubt say that I will never go back unless of course there is a performer that I absolutely have to see in which case I will only sit at the bar. Just don't go.
Smoke offers a terrific brunch but the real treat is the Jazz entertainment. For no extra cover charge we got to hear the wonderful Annette St. John and her jazz trio. She did jazz standards accompanied by some of the best jazz musicians around today. Can't wait to go back to Smoke for some evening entertainment.
How cool is live jazz at a Mother's Day brunch at a famous club.
The waitress was super rude so service level was very poor, this has been a huge disappointment for my friends and I.
The food quality is very limited too.
I would recommend this place for the live music and the jazz band which was good but that’s it.
Probably better to just grab a drink.
Great jazz — plus the food and ambience/people. And I repeat myself.
The food was only fair at best, The waitress was extremely rude. I had friends visiting from Spain and they asked me if the people in NYC were all this unfriendly! I will NEVER go back.
Very good quality music in a cosy place. The food is ok and the staff is attentive.
Locale piccolo e molto intimo, atmosfera stupenda con musica dal vivo 40$/person davvero spesi bene perché gli artisti sono di livello alto. Piatti molto ben presentati e deliziosi. Accoglienza così così, servizio ottimo.
The quintet was the only talent in entire place. The guy out front didn’t have my reservation, which I booked a week go through Open Table (luckily we bought tickets ahead of time). The waitstaff brought my husband the wrong entree and took forever to fix it. My entree (ratatouille) was tasteless and soggy. Lastly the food is outrageously priced for the poor quality. Utterly disappointed.
