For many years I have been a frequent visitor to all of the Jazz Clubs in NYC, and I really do mean all of them. Smoke is a tiny, intimate spot, and I like going there on the weeknights and sitting at the bar and have seen/head some excellent shows there over the years. This makes is affordable. I can't recommend going there on a weekend, however. Spending well over $200 for two people on a mediocre dinner from their prix fixe choices with one shared large beer, and a 40 minute set of music is simply not worth it to me. And the music was from one of my favorite performers, who doesn't play often in NYC, but the set was very short, and way too uninspired. I guess if you are a tourist with tons of money, or on an expense account and don't really care about the short set of music, this is the place for you. But if you want to seriously hear some music, have a decent meal, and similar classy ambiance, albeit at a more reasonable price, I would recommend Dizzy's and the Standard much more highly. I realize that they are larger venues and that Smoke needs to charge high prices because they don't do the volume needed to pay the rent, but those prices simply don't work for me. I hope that they pay their musicians well. I have no problem paying the $38 cover, which is fair, but I'd like more music for my $$, especially if I am stuck buying an overpriced, small portioned, mediocre dinner.

The food was good but really nothing special (my lobster ravioli seemed like it had been frozen, bought from a grocery store),the beer we wanted was tapped, sangria was pretty but watery, BUT: really good music, a friendly, really great server, dim lighting in a cozy space and an unpretentious crowd made for a happy evening. This is the kind of place that will reinforce your mood: if you are primed to enjoy it, you will, but if you are cranky, you may find bones to pick at and will get annoyed when the bill arrives.

Note there is a $45 cover charge which you are not told about upfront. We arrived, were seated and the music stopped playing. We finished our drinks and asked for the cheque and saw a $45 per person charge had been added. For 20 mins of music that is a lot. I would only suggest if you’re a huge jazz fan. Staff were also fairly rude.
The manager was kind enough to waiver the $45 charge considering we were not even there for one drink before the music stopped however was a dampener on an otherwise great first night in NYC.

To expensive. You can´t shoose the amount of money you want to spend. They have minimum for everything: consumption, tips. Besides all of this they charged twice in our credit card!!!!

The music was great but at the end we were served a very surprising bill. They tacked on a hefty $45 per person cover charge and added the tip. Very disappointed!

We were at Smoke Jazz on Christmas Eve - it was a lovely way to celebrate the holiday with my family, but the food and service was "ok." The music was outstanding - if I was to visit again I would sit at the bar for a drink and listen to the music

The music was as good as one could have hoped. But on top of a 38 dollar cover charge, requiring guests to also buy a $45 prix fix meal felt excessive and detracted from the experience. (I note that this was a holiday season requirement that isn't always in place.) The cost felt especially excessive in view of the fact that the food was not excellent (it was just ok) and the appetizers and - especially- the dessert were quite puny.

Food on prix fixe menu was a mixed bag: a pork chop schnitzel was large and delicious; the shrimp cocktail (four shrimp in sauce from a bottle) and desert ( a tiny canolli and one strawberry) we’re both expensive jokes. That said, music (Vincent Henning Quartet with Dave Kikoski on piano) was fabulous. Given level of musical genius on display, hard to understand why they weren’t lined up on the sidewalk to get in, Even for the 7 pm gig. Go and sit at the bar.

We had brunch here and it was delicious. The pricing is very good for what you get. But, the most important value is the great musicians. I love jazz and the piano player was the best. We also really appreciate that the Club makes it clear we're there to listen/watch jazz, not just eat. As the hostess says, "this is a jazz club that serves food....not a restaurant that plays jass." Great distinction!
So, when there were two women talking (loudly) right next to us, we asked the waitress to tell them to be quiet. She was diplomatic but they still chose to leave.... guess they weren't there to listen to jazz!
Love this place. It's intimate and you can see the band from every seat.

This has to be on my list of favorite destinations in NY. Coming up on a dozen or so visits and fantastic every time. Food is always good though this time there was a bit of a delay in getting our food. Of course, the main attraction is the music!! In this department there is never a misstep. Looking forward to our next visit already.

Smoke is one of the premier jazz clubs in the city. The musicians are some of the best in the world, and the food is better than it has to be. I highly recommend the fried chicken.

The food isn’t the reason to go to Smoke. The jazz is the reason. We went to see a specific singer, Gregory Generet and were treated to an outstanding jazz performance by Gregory, Richard Johnson and the rest of their ensemble. Fabulous night!

Smoke is rightly famous for the first-rate jazz musicians they feature throughout the week. While the cover charge is low -- $15 -- if you want to sit at one of the tables with a good view of the band, Smoke hits you with a $38 charge for a pre-fixe dinner. If the dinner were good, I'd have less of a complaint. But the quality of the food is bad to mediocre, and the portions are small. Add a tip to the meal (never mind a glass of wine), and you're paying $60 bucks to hear a jazz band.

We booked to see the Bill Charlap Trio play with dinner for my daughters 18th birthday. We were visiting from England for a week and this evening was a real highlight. The venue is suitably dingy for an authentic jazz club feel, great cocktails and fantastic food were only outshone by the brilliant musicians. We got chatting to a wonderful couple from California sitting next to us who generously gave my daughter a CD of the trio for her birthday. The staff on the door and our waitress were all friendly and helpful. We would definitely return. Thank you all for a fantastic night!
