The food was good, the ambiance was alright, the jazz was great The seating too closed in with too many tables. The restaurant should let the customers know in advance there is a $40.00 per person fee to listen to the live jazz, not when the customer sits down at the table. Our friends came to the restaurant late, 45 minutes after the show started and this left 15 minutes of jazz music. I informed my friends that the show would be over in 15 minutes and there is cover charge of $40.00 per person for the live jazz. My friends' decided to leave because they are not going to pay $40.00 per person for 15 minutes of jazz. The waitress had the never to follow my friends' outside thinking they was going to pay the cover charge to listen to 15 minutes of music. This is not a place I would go to again just because the customer is not informed in advance about the $40.00 per person charge and the horrible waitress. Like I said the jazz was excellent and the food was good.
A great thing about Smoke is that some exceptional artists appear regularly so you don't have to wait too long to see them again. The dishes are delicious! Just be early for performances . . . and put yourself on their email.
Despite confirming a table for one, the greeter tried to push me to the bar but graciously provided a table after I mentioned the confirmation. He also arranged for me to have a hamburger, which I very much appreciated. For no good reason, hamburgers have been off the menu for a while. Hopefully they’ll be brought back. I don’t know another jazz joint serving food that doesn’t offer hamburgers. In any event I am grateful for the exception.
Celebrated my Husband's 45th Birthday at the Smoke Jazz Cafe. It was AMAZING! Professional staff and wonderful Artists. Will definitely visit again.
I was gelebrating together with my SO our engagement and we got good service in a very nice ambiance. The food, music and service all met our expectations and then some.
Great dinner and evening (Monday 9/3/18), Thank's
I went to this wonderful venue after searching for a nice jazz club. This find was a gem and I will definitely go back. I do not live in NY but visit often. The food was excellently prepared and the chocolate brownie dessert was beyond decadent. Small, intimate setting, excellent safe location, excellent sound system, easy to get to, personable staff, live music, great food, world known chef and a sous chef as well. Im a retired educator and SMOKE gets an A++
Extremely overpriced. Good show. Food was cold and very ordinary. Service below expectations.
We couldn’t stay for one more drink because we should have to pay the “music” one more time. A mere &40 per person ! !
Enjoyable with great jazz. Pleasant and efficient staff.
Nice venue, however space is extremely small/limited
great jazz club . wonderful music food excellent. it is cozy yet comfortable
Great, classic Harlem (almost) jazz club. Outstanding music, very good food and drink, good vibe, casual atmosphere. Kitchen is small and trying to deal with a compressed schedule, so arrive early (at least an hour before the show for a full dinner) and be prepared for some delays in receiving the main course. Servers were friendly and helpful. Be aware that tickets/reservations for the show are separate from dinner reservations.
Excellent food and music, good view on the stage. Friendly german speaking service.
You go to a jazz club for the jazz, and Smoke has been delivering for more than a decade. Food is good (not great, but good), drinks are honest, jazz is hot and the atmosphere cool.
I LOVE SMOKE!!!! I went there to hear the magnificent Karrin Allyson -- and wow, was she great. The food was delicious!!!! And Tariq is THE BEST!!! He listens to customers and accommodates everyone's requests if he possibly can. The service was friendly and good. The food was DELICIOUS!!!! I went there two nights in a row and had the wild cod both nights and it was fabulous!!! Very nice wait staff. Overall FABULOUS experience at SMOKE. Thank you all!!!!
Loved my trip to Smoke. Such a nice place and I was very well looked after by Frank and his lovely staff. Food was good without being exquisite. Wine by the glass and cocktails were very good. But the music was brilliant (that’s Irish for ‘awesome’)! Saw Mike Ledonne’s groover quartet. They have played there every Tuesday night for 18 years so they must be doing something right. I thoroughly enjoyed my whole evening.
The Music was too loud.
It was too cold. And we found it really expensive for a one hour Music set...
Overpriced jazz concert, compulsory drinking fees, spent $60 for one hour session, which in the village will be $20 for the whole night - drink as you wish.
The food is over priced with small portions. Plus there is a $40 per person music charge. Times Square tourist prices for chain restaurant level food quality.
The music is amazing. There is a $40 music charger per person and it’s totally worth it. We went for one of the dinner shows which had a fixed menu, $40 for a 3 course meal. The kitchen requires you put in your whole order at once before the show starts. The appetizers came out but then the health inspector showed up so no other dishes were served. After the show we were charged full price for our appetizers rather than a fixed rate for the fixed menu we order from but never received. This amount was almost as much as the fixed menu itself making it feel like the restaurant was more interested in getting money from us than providing good service. I understand restaurants have to make money I just feel like it wasn’t great service after we never received the rest of our meal.
Great evening with NYC Restaurant Week. Food and drinks were premium. Only one thing you should know is $40 per person live music fee on Friday. Call prior to check.
We waited over an hour between our appetizer and entree, because the health inspector was there. We weren't informed of this delay until we asked about it after an hour. We could view staff awkwardly hanging around during the inspection, distracting from the show. The base fee and prix fixe menu pricing was so confusing and misleading - and the total cost for the evening was way overpriced (the food was average).
Fantastic performers, always excellent music in the cozy perfect venue on the Upper West Side on NYC.
The food is delicious, the service prompt, the cocktails excellent. Good wine list. Worth a trip from anywhere. If you love jazz you have to go to Smoke
Smoke was amazing! The food and music were incredible. Would definitely recommend.
We were given the best seat in the house, a nice cozy table for two by the window, where we had the full view of the band and could still have a nice conversation with each other. Food was good. We went during Restaurant Week and for the first course we had Fried Calamari and Popcorn Shrimp. For the second course I had the seafood bouillabaisse which was creamy and tasty while my date had the strip steak. The steak was grisly but flavorful. Obviously The jazz music trio with Ben Patterson on the keyboard, Jason Brown on the drums, and Peter on the guitar was the highlight of our evening experience. We’re definitely coming back for more jazz.
The food was very good, but during restaurant week, the choice and quality of desserts were poor.
Very expensive. Didn't like the way I was ushered in and out like it was a time share of a jazz club. Band was good, but $470 for ~90 minutes of food, drinks and entertainment is not sustainable for me personally. Wish I had known their was an entree-per-person requirement. Missed that bit on the website for the 8:30 slot. I should have done the latest show.
The 3 stars are for the music alone. The jazz was terrific, and the room was small and intimate, so you really felt caught up in the performance. That's the only plus to this venue. I was not impressed with my appetizer, but I wasn't expecting much, so that didn't bother me. However, the bouillabaisse was one of the single WORST dishes I have ever been served. Most of the shellfish was either frozen, or in the shrimp's case, canned. It tasted fishy, and the mussels probably weren't even cleaned properly, because there was grit in my broth. There was no lobster, despite the name (Lobster Bouillabaisse), and there was this oily mayo-type substance overlaying some of the shells that I can only assume was supposed to be garlic aioli. The best part of my meal was dessert, which was a fudge brownie so microscopic I thought at first it was a joke. The serving staff worked hard to keep up with the orders, but seemed behind the eight ball. That might be because everyone sat down half an hour before the music began, and all ordered at once, but finding my server to order another drink was a challenge. All in all, a great venue for jazz, but sit at the bar, and avoid the food. I must say that my friend told me that Smoke was considered a barbeque restaurant, and what I ordered is not what it's known for, so I can't speak to that. Steaks and such may be better - I can't imagine they could possibly be worse.
Great introduction to the NYC jazz bar scene. Nice, intimate seating with close proximity to the band (without being too loud). Good deal to have dinner (Mon - Thurs) and skip the cover charge.
Happy with the quantity and quality of the food. Nice drinks and service. Oh and great live jazz! Look forward to going again :)
Nice music, great ambiance
It was amazing!! Would definitely go there again. The food and service was great.
Petite salle. Décors simples et adaptés. Un lieu à découvrir absolument.
I chose the SMOKE for my final day of NY stay.
It was quite a good choice.
I enjoyed jazz trio, great dishes(especially, Tomato& Mozzarella salad was amazing!).
Great ambiance. Smaller space so it makes it a more personal experience with the jazz band. Good food.
Food was okay m, music was great. It was an expensive night but enjoyed it!
The Duane Eubanks Quintet were playing the night we went, and were fantastic.
I had an unbelievably good time. The Jazz was on point and a group I wasn’t familiar with. The food was ok. Dessert was delish. Food was under seasoned and a little bland. But i will definitely return to this place.
Food so bad !!!!
Others things very good.
il cibo è buono ma è il jazz che la fa da padrone
