The Smoke Door was a delightful and surprising experience. The Japanese answer to a dine in speak-easy. Thanks to Open Table, we found this gem in an unassuming location. If you don't know it's there, you'll drive right by it. From the moment we sat down, we were treated to an experience we'll never forget. This small location only seats once a night and serves a fixed menu. We chose the 10 course menu with the beverage pairing. Each course was paired with a wine or cocktail. With each course , our server, Alex, gave a description and background with a recommendation for enjoying the course. We had such a nice time eating and watching the magic happen in the open kitchen. The kitchen never stopped moving. It is apparent that they enjoy their craft and are proud of their art. We had to give compliments to the chef and staff. We were invited to see the kitchen and meet the staff at the end of our meal. We can't say enough to express how much we enjoyed our time here. We will definitely be back.

It was freezing in the restaurant and they stayed the heat was broken. The vegetarian tasting menu was not good and a sad representation of what could be done with vegetables. We also got drink pairing and they forgot to get us a few glasses that went with our meals. Overall a very disappointing experience, as we were really looking forward to having this kind of dining in tahoe!

Exciting new and unique dining experience in the area and a great addition to North Tahoe's dining scene. Great atmosphere, inventive menu and presentation, unique signature cocktails, and exceptional service. The wood-fired dishes have a rustic yet refined quality. Try the tasting menu.

I'm a little reluctant to write a glowing review. Because I'd like to be able to get a future reservation and that can get difficult once the word gets out about a great restaurant in Tahoe. But this place is really delicious. We've eaten her twice now and both times were exceptional. I've done both the 6 and 10 course option with the drink pairing. We also went last night with a friend who doesn't eat pork so we got to see what they do to replace the pork belly course - yummy butternut squash thingy. Oh, and they have Toto Washlets in the bathroom for your tender tushy.

Excellent service and cuisine. We sat at the bar and were served by the entire staff, both kitchen and servers. Everything was on point and every dish was perfectly prepared. Hope to see this place packed next time I go. I would go back.

A new star in North Lake Tahoe. Genuinely innovative and outstanding cuisine is presented beautifully and artfully—probably the best restaurant to open in Tahoe in the past 30 years. Each dish in the set menu is a journey to different culinary regions and local flavors with a background Japanese influence. Simply one of the best and worth every single penny. A singular experience.

Our last dinner while on holiday in the area turned out to be the best food of our whole stay. We did the 6 course tasting menu with the drink pairing and every single experience stood on its own merit. Very unique and well executed presentation. Highlights for us were the Avocado Toast and Pork Belly, but everything was tasty. We highly recommend this jewel of a restaurant. Enjoy getting ressies now before the remodels of Biltmore and CalNeva close by will make securing a spot much more of a challenge in the future.

It was a very fun and elegant evening! We had the 6 course tasting menu. Every thing was excellent. The sushi, pork belly and trout stood out from the rest. You were offered Mary’s Chicken or Wagu beef (for a $45 sur charge) as your main entree. It might be nice to have another option or two! The service was fantastic and the staff was so nice! It was also fun to watch the action in the open kitchen. I would definitely recommend Smoke Door! Nothing like it in the Tahoe Region!

What a fabulous find! This is the second location for this restauranteur - the first one is in Yokohama, Japan! The unusual way of cooking instills all of the food with amazing rich flavors. You have to experience it to understand. The avocado toast was the hit of the evening. I loved the mushroom rice that turned into soup. My girlfriend's favorite was the hamachi sushi course. But every course was divine. It's hard to resist choosing the Wagyu steak (which I ordered), but the chicken alternative was so unusual I liked it a little bit better. Also have to mention the cauliflower, which is cooked for 3 days by hanging it about 3 feet above the fire, so it sits in smoke from other entrees and appetizers as they are cooked. We will DEFINITELY come back to this one.

Celebrated our 5 year anniversary here. It is a very intimate space. You feel like the staff is there just for you. The wood smoke fills the place with an aroma I wanted to bottle and take home. Every course (we chose the ten course, with the drink pairing) is delightful, from light and refreshing to savory and rich and everything in between. I recommend the drink pairing, as it compliments each dish. Thank you to the staff, thank you to the chefs. This is a gem I’m not sure north Tahoe/kings beach know that they have.

I really enjoyed my dinner at Smoke Door. we were celebrating my fiancé’s birthday and had a wonderful time. The food is extremely thoughtful well curated fresh with balance flavors. Our server was also very knowledgeable and friendly. This is a great place for a special occasion, and while served small bites, overall we left very full from the 6 course pre fix menu. The overall vibe of the restaurant was really cool and not something you normally see in incline/kings beach area. Loved it and will be back!

We were lucky enough to get reservations shortly after Smoke Door opened in North Lake Tahoe. First impressions were wonderful, I was greeted with a cloth napkin with my name embroidered on it at my seat (maybe because we clarified in advance that we were celebrating my birthday?) The menu was amazing (we selected the 10 course) and was definitely worth the price. We did not do a drink pairing, but instead shared a bottle of sake. The wait staff was incredible. They explain every course as it comes and even suggest how to go about eating it (there were a multitude of silverware options, so this was greatly appreciated, even for some of us who were well-versed in etiquette!) Really a cool place to try. Nothing else like it. 10/10.

Smoke Door is a delicious and truly unique menu and dining experience in North Lake Tahoe. Nothing on their menu is mundane. Even their Avocado Toast, served as an appetizer course, is unlike any you have tried anywhere; delicately sliced smoked avocado over secret recipe brown butter toast. Outstanding!! Trout, Wagyu, Chicken dishes all uniquely flavored with delicate sauces and salts! Their eggplant buried in embers with miso glaze is my favorite vegetable, although you can’t go wrong with any of them! And don’t skip the Donabe rice at the end. It’s worth the wait!! Everything is served as small portions, so you can try everything and won’t have trouble getting to the end of either tasting menu. Don’t miss the desserts either….wasabi and green apple sorbet…YES! And also Mont Blanc dessert topped with sweetened chestnut purée…..YES!! Executive Chef Tyler Burges is a real talent, utilizing all parts of ash, fire, and smoke to create these incredible dishes and more! And I have to mention their uncommon take on your usual cocktail items. Each wonderful and really special!

Someone said best restaurant for 100 miles. I will expand that to best meal for several hundred miles. The food is exceptional. The balance of flavors was otherworldly. This meal in SF or LA or NY would have been 3x the cost and yet the quality was on par with any of those city’s best offerings. Tahoe has needed this level of quality for a long time. Chefs ability to make every dish so simply but filled with so many wonderful complimentary flavors makes us wonder why menus have become so complicated. This was the best meal we have had in a very long time and that goes for SF, Tahoe, Vancouver, Seattle etc. Can not say enough good things about every dish, the service was perfect, simple subtle yet always humble and attentive. The ambiance is the same, simple and warm. Congrats to the Chefs, the staff and the whole team who brought this restaurant to fruition!!

My first visit to this small place that just recently opened. Two thumbs up for lovers of fine dining like me! I’m already rebooking so I can bring my wife and some friends. It’s booking up well in advance, so don’t wait til the last minute, book your visit now! Japanese-influenced food cooked on the embers of wood fire. Beautiful creations, plated and served with care in a comfortable and classy environment. Food was really delicious, and the service was impeccable. I was in a daze the whole time; where did this place come from? How did this happen? It was like a magical dream, and I’m still grateful that I was able to get in. At this point, two prix fixe menus available. It’s hard to know where to begin, but here is the ten course menu I thoroughly enjoyed last night: Golden Oesetra Caviar, with leek gelee and house made tofu. Great presentation of caviar that enhanced but didn’t overwhelm the star of the dish. Avocado Toast. Beautiful avocado slices on a thick toast, the bottom half soaked in a brown butter-tamari soy sauce. Delicious. Maguro, raw and presented in a sour plum sauce. Very nice. Crispy pork belly. a 48 hour pork belly with a lovely crisped top, served with a sanbaizu sauce. Eggplant in Embers. Cooked directly in embers and halved, with a brûlée egg-yolk-miso sauce on top. Really good. Mt Lassen Trout. Barely cooked trout on it’s crispy skin over a coconut lemongrass sauce. Wagyu. A nice sized portion of imported Japanese wagyu tenderloin, served with real wasabi hand-grated at the table. Donabe Rice. A large pot of rice cooked with Japanese mushrooms served tableside. Embered Pineapple. Homemade salted ice cream over a bed of carmelized pineapple. Pecan Pie. Grandma’s recipe, with cherry blossom creme fraiche.
