Went to brunch with a friend and sat on the second floor. This was on Live Jazz Sunday and the music was great! I was glad we chose to sit upstairs because I don’t know if we would have been able to hear one another over the music. The food was AMAZING!!! I had the Asada that laid on a bed of grits and guacamole. I look forward to going back to try other things on the menu.
The service is more than friendly and attentive. Recommendations were spot on and the food had amazing flavor. My husband I had the lamp chops, his medium well, mine medium rare. The cook was accurate with the preparation, there was a generous amount and the accompaniments to the lamb chops (bokchoy, fingerling potatoes with capers) gave the dish an awesome flavor. Definitely will come again.
Great food especially loved the butter chicken and scallops. Exceptional service.
Our favorite place to visit when we visit DC. The Chicken and Waffles are the best I have ever had! Love the fun vibe. If you are looking for a little bit quieter table, request the upstairs.
We sat on the upper roof deck on a beautiful day, and it was a delight to be there. The hangar steak was very good, and the ceviche lovely and tangy. It was very noisy at the second-level bar, but upstairs was nice and quiet. Picnic table seating. Informal to the max.
Great happy hour drinks are a great deal for $5 rail. I ordered two small plates for my meal and it was ideal. My boyfriend had the duck and cleaned his plate. Awesome, as usual, and will go again!
The food was great. We had the butter chicken and lamb chops. They were both delicious! however, they forgot to bring out the appetizer. After that snafu they gave us dessert instead. They were pretty great about it considering. Also there was a fly in one of our drinks, so check your glassware.
Nice menu with a range of interesting options. Some creative combinations of flavors and ingredients, but some of the execution was a bit off. For example, the branzino is paired with gnocchi that's too heavy and creamy for the fish (my portion of which was overcooked). The Thai mussels are tasty, but the curry overpowers the mussels so the first few bites are a jolt to the palate.
The staff are quite friendly though the service is rushed and hodge-podge (twice, we had our drink order mixed up). On the upside, the kitchen is fast in cranking out the plates.
Food delivered at different times. Eggs overdone, good eggs benedict. Getting salt and pepper was a chore. Very loud music for a morning meal. Friendly waitress, seated quickly. Overall we will continue to look for a favorite brunch place within walking distance of home.
The manager was kind and helpful, we had a terrific booth for our party of four. The Happy Hour was generous and oh, so delicious. Definitely a great find on H Street!
The food was delicious and the service was exemplary. Thank you.
Came with a group of 8 people, including a 3 year old (where we were told that kids eat free off the kids menu!). Great time. A tiny bit noisy but not too loud to talk across a table.
Scallops and burger were amazing, but we got out in an awkward seat next to all the waiters’ computer.
Awesome!! My co-workers and I go all the time it's always nice
I always come back here for the Butter Chicken , which I first tasted when the chef prepared it for the Chefs Take a Stand fundraiser for the National Network to End Domestic Violence, and this time I brought friends, so we also had the Duck Breast (with bacon and brussels sprouts!) and the Ribs -- both were delicious. And it was Wednesday, so we had a half-price bottle of a very good rosé. We also had delicious cheesecake with a chocolate crust, and decadent Tiramisu. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and it was, as always, a wonderful evening.
Smith Common's has some of the best Ceviche I have had in DC. It is always the first thing I order. Turned my sister on to the Ceviche and she now orders it. Keep doing what you're doing. It's working.
We had a great experience. Everything was super. You should however give everyone a larger warning that there is next to no parking in the area.
Great experience with friendly server. The one downside was that while dining on the main floor there was a very loud group of 3-5 people at the bar making more noise than anyone else in the space combined. It was pretty disruptive but thankfully they left in about 30 minutes. Unfortunately nobody from the restaurant felt it necessary to address, so perhaps in the future it would be better to seat dining guests away from the bar area?
The place to go to catch up with a longtime friend over Sunday brunch. I highly recommend sitting in the two big fancy chairs by the window on the second floor. Our server was a delight and answered all of our questions about the menu. We got bottomless Bellinis and it was “really” bottomless drink service. I ordered the chicken and waffles and I really liked how it was roasted chicken instead of fried chicken. While enjoying our meal we could hear the live jazz band on the first floor. This place is a gem and I will be back ASAP :)
They brought our salads out and dropped on all over my friends. They did comp the salads but a manager never came over.
A great place for Brunch with a laid back ambience and good food. Came here because I know a server there from another fine restaurant and I was not disappointed. Brunch was good and we had the Hanger Arsada and Steak and Eggs Tacos which were really done well. The bottomless Mimosa was a great bargain and the selection of Single Malt and other Spirits was great to listen to the live Jazz after eating. My compliments to Sheila, Alex and Hugo for a wonderful experience.
Flavor profiles were perfect. Wouldn't change a thing. Management and servers are the utmost professionals and care about the comfort and taste of their guests. Highly recommend. We are definitely returning soon.
The back door was open and it was very cold. Staff was attentive though
Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at the restaurant. I went for brunch and ordered the french toast which were tasty! Waitress made sure to check up on us to ensure our food and drinks were alright.
Two areas of improvement though:
1: The side order of sausage is overpriced. I paid 5 extra dollars just to get one link of sausage. And they tried to slice it in half to make it seem like I was getting more than I actually was. Any other place I would’ve gotten at least 2-3 links for 5 dollars.
2: Fix the wobbly tables. Its annoying going to restaurants where it is not leveled. Every time I made a move with my fork or knife, the table reacted.
The salmon filet was incredible and their cocktail list is outstanding. Find casual night with great grub!
Went there for Valentines Day. The food was amazing! The service was prompt!
This was our first time at Smith Commons. We needed a romantic night out and that's what we received. There was a prix fix 3 course dinner with dessert for $40. We left satisfied
Great! Except they had a ridiculously small steak on their special Valentine's Day menu. The truffle Mac n cheese and the burger were delicious!
Valentine’s Day Special 3 course price fixed dinner. Chef prepared an amazing meal both visually and taste wise. We’ve eaten at Smith Commons several times and the food has always been excellent.
Smith Commons is a great neighborhood bar & restaurant! Located on the H Street, NE corridor in DC, easily accessible by streetcar from Union Station. Delicious food, normal sized portions. Reasonable prices. Pleasant staff. Will definitely visit again. Recommended!
I hardly leave reviews but this place is deserving. Went in for Brunch and they exceeded my expectations. Was so very pleased from entry to leaving.
Went here to celebrate a friend's birthday. As soon as we walked in the door, we were unsure of whether to go up the stairs located in front of us or step to the right and go in the bar area. We did the latter, and finally saw the hostess stand. The hostess was nice and seated us. Hugo waited on us and was very nice. Very much so a people person. Food was great. I had the duck breast, my friends had a salad, and the lamb chops. No one complained about the food.
Food was excellent but service was totally indifferent. waiting almost 30 min after ordering to get a charcuterie plate, and had to ask why it was taking so long after 20 min. Waiter was really seen. Seems to be too few wait staff. Menu was decent but not overwhelming.
My son and I had a wonderful time, the hostess was amazing and we will definitely be making Smith Commons a weekend habit.
Nice place with friendly staff. Sundays they have live jazz - great if you like jazz, but hard to have a conversation with the people next to you. Went for brunch. Food was good, though portion sizes vary widely (chicken ciabatta sandwich is a hefty plate, but I suggest a side of hash browns for the smaller hangar asada or eggs Benedict).
The restaurant was very loud, service was poor, and the food was mediocre.
Is this place a restaurant or a bar? I was carded at the door when I thought I came for dinner. Paid $29 for lamb chops that were over cooked and covered in a sauce that was entirely too sweet. The guy who refilled our waters spilled water into one of our cocktails and didn’t even apologize or offer to get us a new drink. Overall, low class for a high price. I understand now why this place is on living social.
We were celebrating a friends birthday and we had an amazing time! Great food, great atmosphere, good service.
The food is good, but not super creative. The restaurant always seems drafty. Wait staff is exceptional.
