About
Smith Commons is a different kind of dining destination in Washington, D.C., serving artfully crafted dishes prepared by chefs with multi continental flare, without the white tablecloths or the pretense. Executive Chef Kamal Chanaka creates a fresh new menu each month, with inspirations from around the globe and from the greater mid-Atlantic region.
Wow! This was not a good experience from beginning to end! The wait staff seemed overworked and our server was very unfriendly from start to finish. The food came out at random, drinks took about 20-30 minutes to arrive, server never inquired how our food was, the list could go on. It is a great location and the desserts looked good, but we decided not to stay any longer due to our poor experience.
The experience was fantastic everyone had a great time. The staff is excellent and the food was great! Very enjoyable experience to ring in the New Year and dinner.
We were spending New Year’s Eve in DC and wanted something upscale but not too fancy. Smith Commons was everything we wanted and more. The food was delicious, I had the scallops and my boyfriend had the duck. We also indulged in the truffle Mac and cheese and dessert (cheese cake and tiramisu). We will definitely recommend this to anyone we know visiting DC and will hopefully be back again soon!
Great food. Great drinks. Best service. Thanks again Derrick
best vegetarian platter anywhere. You have to request it. It’s not on the menu.
Amazing service and food. A bit noisy and a background odor of cleaning products were negatives, but we would go again and recommend
Great experience here. Always a good evening
Great food, great prices, great service, great atmosphere.
I had duck breast and it was perfectly cooked.
The service was terrific. Only drawback was noise
Great place to eat and mingle! Could use a bit more music . Overall my experience here for my birthday was nothing short of amazing!
The low price point and attractive atmosphere is what brought me to Smith Commons for brunch. However, the wait staff were unable to answer questions about the food, protion size, etc. so we over ordered. The eggs were swimming in oil and the syrup provided for the waffles had the consistency of phlegm. We ordered a large appetizer and our entrees came out minutes after. Also - a dash of sriracha, in my opinion does not make up for otherwise bland seasoning. Furthermore, restaurant was practically empty and it took an inordinate amount of time to receive service (we were the only people sitting at the bar so you'd think the bartender would have noticed). All in all, a disappointing culinary experience in a restaurant with a hip, urban decor. Might go back for drinks but will eat elsewhere in future.
This place is the BOMB! The food, the vibe, and the prices were all great. I had a reservation for 8 but had to cut it to 4 and they were very accommodating. I received excellent service from an older gentleman whom I told that it was my birthday and he was a superstar. They gave me the cutest Happy Birthday brownie plate and it made my whole day. The food was delicious & so was my drink, the Felicity Watermelon. Truthfully, I look forward to going back & checking out the second floor. The parking could be a challenge so pack your patience but other than that, this is my new favorite Washington DC place. I honestly loved it and so did my guests. They all said they would be back as well. This one is a true treasure and I am so glad it was part of my special day.
Great food. Great service and great ambiance. My guest an I really liked the experience
Great neighborhood spot with decent food and drinks and rarely crowded durning the week.
Amazing!food was the best I had all year, portions are generous, everything is perfectly cooked to order. We got the short ribs and mussels as appetizers and the lamb and duck entrees. Just perfection all around. We WILL 1000000% be back.
My husband and I had a great experience from the time we walked in the door until the time we walked out. The host greeted us and sat us immediately. The server Xavier was attentive and friendly. The manager touched bases with us to make sure that the service was good. The food was very good. What more can you ask for. We'll be back!!
Best chicken and waffles ever! It is a must every time we head to DC!
My party and I went for brunch. Our server was great, but obviously overworked and had too many tables with little help from other staff. We got there at 1:30 for our reservation and wasn’t given our bottomless mimosas until after 2pm. They stop serving at 3pm, so we were a bit frustrated by that. He did his best to keep up and I appreciated his effort- but there were plenty of other staff members that could have been helping him. The seats we were in were also terrible ripped up and there were some basic updates that the place is desperate for.
Great restaurant! Loved the atmosphere, which is social but not too loud. Food was fantastic. We had the short rib and pork belly tacos and loved them both. The old fashion and wine arrived fast from the busy bar and we’re both excellent. Highly recommend this spot.
Had a wonderful meal there on Sunday evening to end BRW! We tried to the Pre-fix menu; so I had the Butternut Squash Ravioli and my friend had the Butter Chicken. Her chicken was perfect and she said it was flavorful and had the right amount of spice. The Ravioli was very tasty and also was full of flavor. The sorbet was so fresh and a nice way to end dinner. I also had the bread pudding which was yummy.
Staff was very pleasant and helpful. They were very pleased that we enjoyed our meal. We had our water and wine topped off continually so it was a great night. We will definitely dine there again in the future. Thank you.
We've had brunch here before (which was excellent) but this is the first time we had an opportunity for a dinner meal.
We started with a salad which was well blended and lightly dressed; very fresh and crisp.
My husband and I both ordered the BUTTER CHICKEN which was recommended by our server.
OMG, it was so tasty. The chicken had a wonderful flavor and was served with a rich, savory sauce on fragrant coconut rice with naan.
Tonight they featured a bread pudding for dessert which was also rich and delectable.
We loved our meal and would recommend this restaurant as one with a comfortable and casual atmosphere with great food.
Great food. And $20 for bottomless mimosas can’t be beat. This is probably my new brunch spot.
Could have gotten a five stars but reception experience was not very polite and professional to customer
This place is a real treasure! The food is *excellent* and the service is attentive. I love the space - very modern with exposed brick on the H Street Corridor. The drinks are great, too. You cannot go wrong with this place.
My wife and I had dinner here before going to a show at the Rock and Roll Hotel (just a block away). Called ahead of time to check out parking options. Street parking is really the only option. Don't park at AutoZone (they tow).
The hostess and wait staff were very friendly and professional. Service was prompt. The menu had a good variety of appetizers, small plates, burgers, and entrees. There were also good choices for cocktails, wine, and beer. I thoroughly enjoyed the hanger steak and my wife raved about the butternut squash ravioli. Dessert followed with tiramisu and gelato. Both were delicious. Price was in the expected range. We really enjoyed our meal here and plan to go back the next time we're in NE DC.
We had an early brunch, the salmon hash was delicious. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly. The bottomless mimosas were a steal.
Very good, great deal.
Food is amazing!! Service leaves much to be desired. I have been twice and both times the service is slow beyond belief.
While the online menu did not match the menu we were given, our waitress honored the online prices/options & was delightful.
Fair food, service is deplorable.
Our food was amazing but our service was uneven at best.
We had a really good experience at Smith Commons. We were a little confused about who was actually our server, but the food was AMAZING and the drinks were delicious. I would absolutely go again.
Went for brunch on Saturday the Belgian waffles were delicious, the whipped cream tasted home made. Our server was knowledge about the menu and attentive. The setting is modern yet warm and inviting. I am already planning to return soon.
There are much better options on H Street.
It was nice but as the evening switched over to more of a club, the music levels kept going up-and-down. It was OK once you were use to the new music level.
We went to brunch as a party of 8 to celebrate my friend’s birthday. The restaurant seated us at our reservation time and the wait service was immediate and attentive. The kitchen accommodated our additions and special requests with ease. All of food was prepared exactly how we ordered it, which is a huge accomplishment for a large party. The food itself was amazing!! And the bottomless bellinis flowed generously. A fantastic experience. Thank you for making my friend’s birthday celebration seamless and special.
Very nice and quaint spot. Food was very good and the space was quiet enough to enjoy conversation.
Phenomenal food and service. Absolutely can’t wait to ret
Food was amazing and inexpensive. I got lobster curry which was the best meal I have had in months. It was a full lobster tail for $18. Crazy cheap. My date got the tacos and he said they were excellent. Waitress was very responsive. We’ll definitely be back.
We want to frequent this place and claim it as a favorite neighborhood spot. But the decibel again and again proves to be the hindrance. Too loud. We had to change seating just to not shout at each other. In this past visit one of the servers was sitting at the bar eating her lunch, taking breaks to server her customers. That was weird.
