Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse - Chicago Ratings and Reviews
Always wanted to go here, what took so long unsure. We arrived about an hour prior to our reservation to , so sat at the bar. The staff was friendly had questions about the wine so we had a glass of the S&W Reserved red wine; loved it so much we ordered a bottle with our meal. The menu was great and came out quicker that what I would have thought being at 730-800 pm on a Saturday night. Finished dinner and our wine and the experience at Smith & Wollensky will definitely bring us back.
We had another wonderful meal at Smith and Wollensky. We arrived early and took a seat at the bar, putting in a request for a window table. Kudos the bartenders as well, who were quick and gracious.
We were thrilled to get a window table, which was followed by impeccable service. Steaks, broccoli, lobster mac and cheese were all outstanding. We were treated afterward to a tour of the kitchen, where we got a glimpse of the fan-filled aging rooms and saw racks of their signature giant chocolate cakes.
A very memorable evening overall. Thank you!
Our food was terrible. It took forever and when we finally received it, it had to be sent back. Even the waiter walked up and said...oh those are wrong! We ordered medium rare and one of them came out not just blood red, it was ice cold in the middle. We didn’t get an apology really, just served them back up after they threw them back on to cook longer.
For the amount of money, it was a complete and utter disappointment.
The waitress was impatient, it was my husbands birthday and I asked for them to bring him a card or something to acknowledge his birthday and it never came! When we first came keep in mind I’m 6 months pregnant we sat down a lady refused to move her bag and made My husband uncomfortable as well as a older gentleman sitting on the other side of us who gave us really nasty looks for no apparent reason. I hate to say that both individuals were Caucasian’s and me and my husband are African Americans who goes out for fine dining quit often! A very helpful waitress went above and beyond to get us a better seat and make sure that we were comfortable. we enjoyed ourselves because we were together and not because of the service or the experience.
We were seated immediately and Gerald did a fine job explaining the specials. The Woodford Manhattan was a tremendous recommendation as well. All the steaks in our group were cooked perfectly and I would highly recommended the caesars salad. A good sized salad with tremendous flavor and crunch. Too full for dessert but the menu looked wonderful. We will return again.
I went for the cheeseburger. Asked for it medium rare. It came well done and small. Was disappointed about that, and the fries tasted old or not cooked properly. Everyone else enjoyed their lunch. I think they had a lot of parties that day. They just got busy.
Great ambiance and food , I had Scallops and brosoul sprouts were good , we also order New York Strip was really good and tasty , the Mc and cheese was so good and tasty you need to try totally recommend. And for dessert we had the five chocolate cake , Amzing we love it totally worth it for 2 or more people is fine .
My husband and i came to celebrate our anniversary. The ambiance was nice but loud; it was difficult to have a conversation. Our server seemed over-extended or unorganized. Either way he wasn’t very attentive. The appetizers were good; we ordered a half dozen oysters and the scallops. For our entrees we each ordered the 10oz filet and shared a side of whipped potatoes, asparagus and the mushrooms. Our filets were perfectly cooked but they had some gross connective tissue. For the price we expected better quality. The sides were solid. We had hoped to have dessert but had a show to catch and our server took too long. All in all, we felt let down. For the expense, we won’t be coming back.
We tried to walk in for a table at 8pm and was told nothing would be available til after 10 pm. We left and had a drink near by, I went on Open Tables site and was able to book a reservation at 8:30pm. Thank goodness for Open Table!! Unforately the Host turned away another couple at the same time. The server, our food, and atmosphere was wonderful!
This was my favorite restaurant for years!
Stopped going about a year ago!!! Had 3 bad experiences no one seemed to care!
Gave them one last try! Wow they are back !
Everything was great !!!!!!!!! Food service and ambiance perfect!!!!!!!
I’m done with the trendy steakhouse s. Came home!
Thank you to the management & staff
Be sure to get a seat by the window! Despite our reservation being at night, we couldn’t really see the river. However, the lights from the buildings across the river set the ambiance pretty well. Our server was very knowledgeable and pleasant. The food was delicious. The lobster mac’ n cheese was a hit with our group. My mother had the lamb and she loved it and my sister had the Wagyu beef that was presented on a tablet of Himalayan salt.
Sorry we had a dinner of more than 500§ , I booked the table many weeks ago and they locate us in a close room, no view, isolated, next to the waiters. I would not have booked it to have no views at all . The good thing of S &W is the nice room with views not a close place . Pity will not book again
Went for Thanksgiving night dinner and it didn't appear that they had all their ducks in a row. Food was sub par compared to previous experiences at Smith & Wollensky...especially for the price that we payed. I'm not sure if they had their B team services but they were definitely not ready for this occasion.
Thanksgiving dinner for three. They were a bit harried when we arrived, but they made a point to apologize later even though we really weren't all that inconvenienced. I appreciate that they cared. We all ditched the Thanksgiving dinner for seafood options and loved it all. Great shellfish towers. Waiter was stretched a bit thin, but I think they were surprised by the rush (shouldn't have been). We'll go again.
Sad to say our experience was not worth the $1145 (that’s after a $100 comp and does not include the $220+ tip we left, or the $100 pre-dinner bar bill) the seven of us spent on thanksgiving dinner.
We were sat promptly at 4:30pm for our reservation. It took 45mins to receive our first bottle of wine that we ordered shortly after we sat. Appetizers arrived before our wine. Spoke with Manager to express our issue with slow service and hoped that would’ve changed the pace of the rest of the evening. Due to the long wine service the manager kindly removed our two orders of shrimp cocktail and two orders of oysters (approx. $100 comp). Service remained slow for the remainder of the evening. We wanted to order more wine and drinks but it was tough to pin down our waiter.
It was a holiday and I understand business is crazy, staffing is probably not optimal, and guests are crankier than normal. Regretfully, with a $165 per person check average we thought we might get a little more attention than we did.
Food was ok. Oysters were spot on, shrimp cocktail was large but a bit tough, chateaubriand was very good, yet the turkey on thanksgiving - the one dish you know you’re gonna sell a ton of - was inedible. The 5 of us that ordered it could not eat it. At all. We were missing the side of Brussels Sprouts that came with the dinner and the pies for dessert were closer to Gordon Food Service quality than what I would think Smith & Wollensky’s would be proud to serve. Not horrible just expected a bit higher quality.
We paid our bill and left at 8:45pm. 4.25 hrs! And this was not because we wanted an overly long slow paced meal. This was because our table just was not paced properly by the server.
Overall - delayed service, missing items, lack of attention, and okay-to-good food. Holiday or not I would hesitate going here when there’s dozens more “steak” “Americana” style restaurants in Chicago.
One word: TERRIBLE. The Thanksgiving day experience left many things to be desired. The service was extremely slow. The soup was luke-warm, and was sent back to the kitchen, and took approx 15 minutes to return to the table. My turkey dinner had cold dressing, and the turkey was at least 85% fat. I'm not sure where fat comes from on turkey breast - but there it was! The pie for desert was so-so. I was always a fan of Smith & Wollensky, but I think I'm done - no more and cannot recommend.
