About Smith & Wollensky - New York

The landmark Smith & Wollensky in New York City is located on the corner of Third Avenue and 49th Street, serving outstanding steakhouse fare that features USDA Prime steaks, dry aged and butchered on-premise. Opened in 1977, the original Smith & Wollensky has set the standard by which all other steakhouses are judged. The New York Times agrees, calling the restaurant “a steakhouse to end all arguments” and Gourmet said this is the “quintessential New York steakhouse.”

Although Smith & Wollensky has earned its reputation as the quintessential steakhouse, the menu is varied and offers many options beyond the signature exemplary steaks. Guests can also select from a variety of market-fresh seafood, poultry, and lamb. Delicious side dishes complete the meal, such as creamed spinach, hashed browns, and seasonal vegetables. The irresistible dessert selection ends the meal on a memorable note with a variety of decadent, housemade cakes, sorbets, and ice creams.

HOLY TOURIST TRAP. There are so many great steak houses in New York that going to this one is almost a travesty. The steak is mediocre, the sides are boring; in fact, the only good thing that I can recommend on the entire menu is the baked potato. From the moment you walk in and they insist that you check your coat—no coats allowed!—it’s a subversion of everything that is New York hospitality. It’s designed to simulate a true New York experience, for sure; however, it is the least New York experience that you could ever wish for. Nothing is authentic, everything is manufactured, and there are no New Yorkers here. If you’re looking for an old school steakhouse, do yourself a favor and go downtown to Harry’s or Del Monaco’s; if you need to stay in Midtown East go to Capital Grille—or try STK which is modern but amazing. There is nothing to redeem the steakhouse. It is terrible. Do not eat here

Porterhouse for 2 was served only warm while the sides were smoking hot. Service was okay. Tried to get someone’s attention on the steak, but no one responded. Totally ignored. Wasn’t asked ‘how’s the meal” until 20 minutes later when almost finished. Seating was way too tight. Waiter had to fight his way into our table after we sat with the dishes in front of us for another 20 minutes. Too many great Steakhouses to consider again.

The Filet mignon was medium but medium rare ordered. The chosen wine was good but expensive. The menu only includes few red wine bottles below 100$.
The waiter put the tip into the slip himself (way above 18%) without any question asked about. I went to S&W in the 90's and after the millenium quite often and loved it. This time the experience was not good and I do not go to this place again.

Two of us were visiting NYC to run the New York Marathon and spend a week sight seeing. I had last been to Smith And Wollensky in 1997 when I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to return.
The food was excellent, and the service was very good (noting that we are Australian and the descriptions of meat cuts in Australia are different to those in the US) and our table server was able to describe the steaks to us.
Only complain would be how noisy it is. We could barely hear each other.

Our food was delicious, a bit pricey but its an NYC steakhouse so we were not surprised. There is no kids menu but they allowed the kids to share an adult meal. Service was attentive and friendly.

We had made a reservation, but apparently they did not recognize this. The Porterhouse steak for 2 was very good, but we ordered a bearnaise sauce which was really poor. They have to learn how to make a good bearnaise before ordering this again - so ask for it.

Our experience was very disappointing. From the moment we sat down we were basically ignored. Our waiter was arrogant and very inattentive. The iconic old world steakhouse felt worn out, a tiered old place. The well starched and pristine white uniforms were yellow and stained. (Our waiters had blood stains on it) The presentation was equally as tiered and lack luster.
It was not only totally disappointing, but it was sad as well. I guess when we use the term "bye gone days", Smith and Wollensky has now fallen into that category.

Smith & Wollensky is an old school steak house. The prices and caliber of meat are roughly on par with most steak houses in and around NYC. The place is relatively small and thus the tables are quite near one another. As a result, it is hard not to hear other table's conversations, especially as people raise their voices to be heard over the din. Neither cosy or intimate and I certainly wouldn't go there and discuss anything of substance or business related. The service is okay but not stellar and felt mostly perfunctory. Maybe there isn't much to say but there was no engagement whatsoever. My server told me that my order of steak medium well might cause my order to take a while. Huh? Medium well is a pretty common order but perhaps he was covering for a busy kitchen. Well, It certainly did take a while - almost 45 minutes later, I was served a warm but not hot piece of steak. The meat itself was quite good, and the baked potato might have been the largest I have ever seen. Creamed spinach was done right, too. However, all three dishes were at best warm. After that long a wait, I would have liked my food to be hot.

Overall, despite the size of your bill, you will have a good steak but most definitely not feel like you had a fine dining experience; which doesn't bode well for Smith & Wollensky as there are several other steak houses where you can.

The food is just fantastic! A lot of options and especially all the meat is super tender. Of you want to visit a high quality all american steakhouse, definetly go here.
But, I was on a citytrip in NYC with my dad for huis birthday, got him a voucher for S&W. But.. you van use it everywhere except in NY.. We were very ashtonished by that and also a bit disappointed. It was a special evening, but my gift didn’t even work.. I did definetly not expect that from such a place, where service is so important.

We were very pleased as usual when dining at S&W but on this particular evening we had Mark who was our server and was wonderful!!! He is definitely an asset to your restaurant. We have dined there countless times and the service has always been above average but he really was outstanding. We will be returning and will be requesting his section.
Thank you Mark.

We look forward to our time at smith and wollenskys whenever we are in NY. This time was unusual in the the service was extremely inattentive and very slow - and we arrived at 4:30 so “busy” was not an excuse. The food was excellent The host greeting and coat check were excellent I hope the poor level of service is not repeated - or we will find another “Always go to when we are in town” restaurant

I love this place, the food, staff, wine list... The only bad thing is I live 2 hours away so I can't visit more often. S&W is a real steak house with a menu to die for, your food is always perfect and brought to you in a timely manner. I have eaten in 100s of restaurants across 3 continents and this is. by far my favorite. You can have a business dinner, a family event or first date it does not matter..although I would not bring small children and that's simply because the atmosphere is so quiet I would not want to disrupt others.

If you like steak, I would definitely recommend Smith & Wollensky as your first choice in New York City. The steak for two was the best steak I've ever had. My waiter, Zolan, was fantastic. He was the one that recommended that we share the steak for two. I'm so glad we did. We shared the hash brown potatoes which were cooked to perfection. The food and the drinks were expensive but well worth it. If you would like to treat yourself to a great dinner this is the steakhouse that I would recommend.
