Overbooked, understaffed during our visit. Steaks way over cooked, but corrected when refired. Wait staff did their best to overcome management and kitchen deficiencies.
Host staff checked us in, then told us to wait at the bar as our table wasn’t ready. After 30 mins in the bar I inquired with the host and was given a rude response and told to keep waiting. After an hour, I checked again and the host had lost our reservation. We were seated shortly after this, with no apologies from the host who lost our reservation. We probably should have just bailed at this point but decided to give the food a try. The saving grace was our waiter. Fantastic attitude and service from him. The food was good as well. I never understood why a restaurant even has a host when they’re rude and pretentious. Overall, we glad we stuck out the hour wait and poor hosting as the food was great and the wait staff were excellent. A few too many tables cramped into this tight of a space though and very noisy environment for a business dinner.
Tony was awesome!! Food was great.
A long time establishment. Wonderful ambiance and ecor.
Food was ok- bacon is way too salty compared to other steak houses. Prime rib , salads, sides dishes were very good.
Place got really busy after 6pm so best to stop earlier
Waiter was excellent. Food was also amazing. Would come back indoor or outdoor.
We didn't care so much for the side dish potatoes. The potatoes were grated didn't care for the texture.
Amazing!! Go here for any special occasion!
I used to love this restaurant. I don't know what happened. We waited for the menu for 15 minutes, the restaurant load was 30%. Snacks waited 40 minutes, and lobster 1.40. The steak was cooked for 50 minutes from the moment of ordering!
And the final! The waiter, after a terrible service, opened the receipt and began to count the tips! I'm in shock!!! The worst restaurant in the city
This place is fantastic! The staff were so friendly and attentive. I will definitely be coming back.
Overall 5 stars. The food and service. Julie and Jason were great on the phone prior to our arrival. Our waiter was Juan Estrella, seasoned/excellent; knowledgeable and well mannered. My husband had the filet mignon and I had the prime rib, made to perfection. For appetizer I ordered SW split pea soup, absolutely delicious and my husband the SW salad 🥗, great both choices. For dessert their famous coconut cake, (yummy), and the apple crisp with cranberries. Must mention I decided to go old school with a Cosmopolitan Martini 🍸, it was made to perfect, made with quality liquor. I recommend SW hands down. ♥️♥️♥️
S&W never disappoints. The steak is always well cooked at the right temperature.
At some point old institutions, without the right leadership, can fall into a pattern that leads to obsolescence and mediocrity. A global pandemic causing shortages in supplies, cost increases and a lack of labor will amplify sclerotic operations.
1. I chose steakhouses for the quality of the meat, the service, and the ambiance. I made our reservation early in the day when there were tons of tables available and were seated on their crappy soulless second floor which also serves as an event space. Almost 150 a head to sit at what looks like a Marriott cafeteria.
2. Steaks were great and cooked to the right temperature. Unfortunately, our plates were warmer than the porterhouses. Second floor and understaffed issue I’m sure. You don’t have staff? Don’t open your crappy second floor. Asparagus as they serve it is cooked well but it is literally a stalk of ash without an ounce of anything.. no salt, no olive oil… blah. Potatoes gratin and Mac and cheese were tasty but also on the colder side.
3. The bar was made for old white men and their proclivities. Asked for a good rum and all they could offer was Bacardi and Captain Morgan. Captain Morgan I must be on a low-rent cruise ship. This has not happened to me at high end places in many many years. A bit too Eurocentric for such a diverse city and clientele.
Amazing meal and service. Fantastic place for a special occasion or date night. Tony was a great server!
Always excellent Glad to see they're open for lunch again..
Better steakhouses in Manhattan (Wolfgang’s, Mastros); only go here out of convenience.
Dinner for 3 was fun and not rushed. Had to request not to be seated at a table outdoors by the main entrance when there were other open tables. Finally sat on 49th St side. Drinks were good and never had to wait long for those. The bread basket is nice as not everyone does it anymore. There was a misunderstanding about the wedge salad but was rectified quickly. And the steaks and sides and tuna were delicious. Would definitely recommend for al fresco dining.
Todo delicioso… como siempre. B
We made last minute plans with a cousin of mine to meet in NYC and decided to go to Smith & Wollensky. I've never dined here before, but we are definitely steak eaters and couldn't wait to try it. Our appetizers were very tasty, the wedge salad and the crab meat cocktail. Then we had the porterhouse steak and filet-mignon on the bone which were cooked to perfection and delicious. Our dessert consisted of NY style cheesecake which definitely hit the spot. All in all, our dining experience was really great and I would definitely be coming back to this restaurant again.
The food was amazing. My only complaint is that the tables were really close together and they sat everyone on top of each other even though there was plenty of room to spread out, especially when we first were sat.
My first time at this steak house. Prices are what you would expect for the type of restaurant and being in NYC, but it was worth every bite. Our service was excellent, our waiter was friendly, offered advice and took good care of us. We had the veal chop and filet with lobster tail add on. Both were exceptional. Look forward to going back.
Amazing steak. I got the hanger with potatoes and cream spinach… to die for. Cooked perfect. Cheese cake for dessert… just wow. Homemade for sure. Cant wait to go back
Super super loud. Service slow …30 minutes after seating for our drink order and 50 minutes for food to arrive after we ordered. The main course arrived cold and had to be sent back which was another 15 minutes. Not their performance.
S&W shows why they remain at the top of the heap of NYC great steakhouses! The city is in the midst of shaking off 18 months of COVID restrictions, shutdowns and labor shortages which presents a challenge for any business. Last night our party of 4 sat outside along the 3rd Avenue side of the location and had a simply wonderful time.
FOOD--the reason you go right! Seafood tower fresh and the seafood lobster, crabmeat and shrimp looked and tasted wonderful. The focused wine list was formidable in its own right and the full list of wines could keep us at this place for a lifetime. We picked a mid range Jordan cab and it was spot on. Enjoyed some shared appy of tomatoes and Brooklyn buratta (tasted like a wonderful cloud) and slab O bacon--can never go wrong with bacon. Mains included crab cake (packed solid with crab, Prime rib(perfectly cooked and presented with fresh ground horseradish) Filet au poivre (exactly as it was intended to be and tender as a lady's heart) and a veal chop (beautifully frenched and properly sauced. Couldnt believe we had room for deserts but we hit up--coconut cake (legend on a dish) NY Cheesecake (great version maybe a tad too much lemon zest though) and a butterscotch pecan sundae (which should be illegal!)
SERVICE--NY steak house with knowledgeable waiters and staff. We were OK with a slow pace since it was a wonderful evening. However it will take some time for all the labor that these places need to get things back to normal. The staff really showed that they cared and repeatedly helped manage the situation as best as it could on a busy Saturday night.
OVERALL---we will surely be back. S&W does this cuisine as it was intended and NYC sets a high bar for steak joints which they easily clear.
We went to Smith & Wollensky last night for my husband’s birthday celebration. The staff was very nice and the meals were warm and delicious! They also brought a strawberry shortcake for him and sang along the birthday song for him 🥰. I can’t wait to go back!!
Amazing service!!! Staff genuinely wanted you to enjoy your experience. Steak was great. Sides were great. Apps were great. Not overpriced like every other steak house in the city. We eat out often and I’m not afraid to spend money. Best overall experience I’ve had at a steak house.
One of the best meals we’ve ever had. Tony our server was amazing! Super attentive and helpful. He’s one of the best!
We choose Smith & Wollensky because we wanted a restaurant with a real NYC flavour when in town to see our son in grad school. We had fantastic food and a terrific time. Our waiter Danny made sure everything was perfect. It was our first time at the restaurant but everyone was so personal we felt like regulars. Smith & Wollensky”s definitely lives up to its grand history.
I had made a reservation for a standard table, but when I arrived, they made me sit at the bar because they told me they didn’t have any tables and if I wanted the table I requested I would have to wait. Not ok. If I’m going to take the time and expense of eating at S&W, the least they could do is honor the reservation that I made.
I was really looking forward to this dining experience but it has been a disappointment, I don't think I will be going back for a very long time. First of all, the service was really slow, it took about an hour for the food to be served after ordering. The steak was overcooked to what we specified the done-ness to be. The highly reviewed coconut cake was also a let down. The whole experience was just poor considering the price tag that came with this meal. Will explore other steak establishments instead.
Classic food and setting Great staff. Always a good time, especially during wine week.
Cramped tables and seating in the path of key walkways makes relaxed dining difficult. Food temperature cold when served.
Food and service was great. Wine selection was better in the past.
Food was great. Portion of prime rib was small for the price compared to other luxury steak houses. Service was inconsistent. Drinks were ordered but not delivered timely. Shrimp cocktail was served on a flat bed of ice whereas two weeks ago of was served in an upright glass which is much better. No small forks were provided for oysters and no butter knives. Waiters were friendly but often distracted when needed. Service was much better two weeks ago.
It was a delightful lunch and delightful staff.
Service , food and atmosphere
GM Roger does a wonderful job managing the restaurant
Bar was so much fun .
Great staff- old school
Wine Week is the best!
Very good place, a classic in NYC if you want to spend a nice evening in town
Waited 40 mins for a steak. Saw the waiter twice while we were there.
Service was painfully slow. We sat outside and waited at least one hour for our steak. Meanwhile, the sidewalk was very noisy and there was a homeless man who blared his boombox to attract diners catching their cabs/cars. It became a very stressful evening.
