About Smith & Wollensky - New York

The landmark Smith & Wollensky in New York City is located on the corner of Third Avenue and 49th Street, serving outstanding steakhouse fare that features USDA Prime steaks, dry aged and butchered on-premise. Opened in 1977, the original Smith & Wollensky has set the standard by which all other steakhouses are judged. The New York Times agrees, calling the restaurant “a steakhouse to end all arguments” and Gourmet said this is the “quintessential New York steakhouse.”

Although Smith & Wollensky has earned its reputation as the quintessential steakhouse, the menu is varied and offers many options beyond the signature exemplary steaks. Guests can also select from a variety of market-fresh seafood, poultry, and lamb. Delicious side dishes complete the meal, such as creamed spinach, hashed browns, and seasonal vegetables. The irresistible dessert selection ends the meal on a memorable note with a variety of decadent, housemade cakes, sorbets, and ice creams.

I had a great experience in the past at S&W but on this occasion it was disappointing. The steak which was ordered medium rare was well done, beet and almost tasteless and the other dishes were so so. Won’t be going back unfortunately since it does have a distinctive ambiance.

As usual the food and staff were excellent. Table was ready on time on a busy Friday night during the December holiday season. Even though it was very busy you wouldn’t have know it by the level of service.

We were SO disappointed . I have been a New Yorker my whole life and we are regulars at S & W. I was taking 6 people, out and we were all disappointed. The upstairs room was awful. We were in front of a window and freezing. The food was not much better than fair. So disappointed at a place my family has gone for years.

Very crowded - forced too many people into the existing space. Steaks were ordinary. Each of the 4 of us got bumped each time servers passed by.

I was really looking forward to this but I was quite disappointed. The portions are so huge so we ended up paying so much for something we couldn’t finish - even though we ordered the smallest steaks. There was a lot of gristle on the steaks, they hadn’t been trimmed down, I don’t know if that’s their style though to retain flavour - and to be fair they did taste good. The broccoli had barely been cooked at all - I do like my veg crunchy but this was rock hard.

It was holiday season so the restaurant was really busy with big parties around us so we couldn’t actually hear each other and it felt quite chaotic. It would have been nice to have a table somewhere quieter especially as we had booked ages in advance.

They didn’t seem to sell wine by the glass which is a shame, my partner doesn’t drink and I didn’t want to have to order a 1/2 bottle to myself.

It was also freezing.

On line I knew this steakhouse was not inexpensive and may stop others from coming. Do not let this bother you. It is a very special place. I and my two dining partners ordered the seafood appetizer plate to share -- this is an expensive dish but enough huge prawns, lobster and crab to make us feel like we already had eaten our dinner. Two of us shared the Colorado Rib which was plenty to eat while our other guest ordered the filet which was seasoned and cooked to perfection. Nothing else comes on the plate so we ordered the truffle mashed potatoes which were delicious. However we could have done without the potato dish as we ate very little of it as we were too full to truly enjoy it. We passed on dessert even though the dessert tray was appealing. I had always wanted to eat at this location and was glad I did as this was probably the best meal I ever had in NYC.

The food was delicious, the portions big. The rastaurant, however, was very noisy and packed. Tables are quite close together and people (incl. waiters) kept bumping into our table.
Other than that nice evening.

Their best days are behind them. They served a tomato salad that wasn't ripe and never should have been served. This wouldn't have happened in their glory days. Steak is good but there are much better in town.

My boyfriend and I went for dinner and it was a great experience. Wait staff was knowledgeable, friendly and professional. The food was well executed and delicious. Crab cakes and plaque filet minion for two, we truly enjoyed all of it. I haven’t been to SW for years and I was not disappointed!
Truly a great evening out.

I was very disappointed with the food in the night. Celebrating a birthday, it was a special outing. When paying $50+ for a steak, you expect it to be cooked according to the customer instruction. I did ask for a medium fillet but, even though very tender, it was over cooked. In hindsight, I should have sent it back. Not a great experience but here you go. Live and learn...

Best Martinis in town. Our waiter was just extraordinarily fantansic. The service was prompt.

We had a pre-show dinner and waiter was very sensitive and attended to our every need.

Would definitely recommend without any hesitation.

Smith & Wollensky is fantastic if you want a simple dinner that is done right. I ordered a filet mignon which was perfectly cooked and had absolutely no complaints. Three of us shared two sides and everything was very delicious. Our waiter offered my mother a special lobster and filet domination that wasn’t part of the menu. The restaurant is elegant and quaint. Very happy with our experience.

We were there on a Friday evening surrounded by business people who it appeared were known to the waiter. We admitted this was our first time there but ordered each course, except for appetizers, for a party of 3. However, we were ignored throughout the dinner, not attended to, while the waiter laughed and conversed with other parties. We waited for 1/2 hr for the check until we grabbed a different waiter. I paid in cash so I wouldn't have to be there waiting to pay.
We were there 4.5 hrs. That's outrageous. Never going back.

Had dinner here for the first time in four or five years. The good news is that the food is still great! If your top priority is a good meal - this is still a great choice. The bad news (at least from my point of view as a diner) is that I felt like we were in a factory more than a restaurant. When we arrived, we were sent upstairs where we waited to see a 2nd host. He quickly took us to a small, terrible table next to a beam. When we asked to be moved, we were accommodated, however the waiter at our new table was completely useless (pleasant but awful). We ordered a decent bottle of wine ($200) and the waiter had no idea what it was or how to serve it. He kept trying to overfill our glasses (in hopes that we would order a second bottle, perhaps). When our main dishes arrived, my Prime Rib was overcooked and when I complained about the temperature, I was told "this was the only piece left on the kitchen"). Nothing makes you feel better than knowing you got the last piece of Prime Rib in the kitchen - the one they weren't going to serve if they didn't have to. My wife ordered a bone in filet Medium Rare and it came out way under-cooked. We were afraid to send it back after the Prime Rib discussion. She did say when heated up the next day - it was very good. Overall - a bad experience. I used to live in NYC and I used to eat at Smith & Wollensky at least once a month. Don't think I'll be back.

The restaurant is very loud. My husband and I sat at a table for Two and unless we were looking at each other we.couldn’t hear each other. The lamb chops were very bland. There was nothing special about the cauliflower. I’ve been to Smith & Wollensky in other cities and had a pleasant experience. They packed the most tables possible into the space and have frazzled staff running around.

Overpriced, used-car sales mentality waiter trying up-sell most expensive dishes rather than listen to customer needs. Very noisy place, even on a Tue. For the money, there’s a lot of better alternatives in Midtown New York. Been there before, but this was my final visit
