About Smith & Wollensky - New York

The landmark Smith & Wollensky in New York City is located on the corner of Third Avenue and 49th Street, serving outstanding steakhouse fare that features USDA Prime steaks, dry aged and butchered on-premise. Opened in 1977, the original Smith & Wollensky has set the standard by which all other steakhouses are judged. The New York Times agrees, calling the restaurant “a steakhouse to end all arguments” and Gourmet said this is the “quintessential New York steakhouse.”

Although Smith & Wollensky has earned its reputation as the quintessential steakhouse, the menu is varied and offers many options beyond the signature exemplary steaks. Guests can also select from a variety of market-fresh seafood, poultry, and lamb. Delicious side dishes complete the meal, such as creamed spinach, hashed browns, and seasonal vegetables. The irresistible dessert selection ends the meal on a memorable note with a variety of decadent, housemade cakes, sorbets, and ice creams.

The main restaurant is quieter than the grill. Cosy ambiance.
Service good and friendly.
The meat is exceptional, specially the filet mignon on the bone ( house speciality).

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I love S&W Pea soup! I was so excited coming into town to go and have a bowl on a cold night after traveling all day. Disappointing. The service vibe was way off and the pea soup was room temperature and just not what I am normally so excited to eat.

My girlfriend and I dined at Smith and Wollensky to celebrate Valentine's Day this year. Everything was fantastic from the beginning of the meal to the end. The wait staff was kind and attentive, walking us through the menu as it was our first time dining there. All of the food was prepared to perfection, and the ambience was lively yet quiet enough to carry on a private conversation with ease. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fantastic meal in the city.

STEAK YUM. Baked potatoes like shoes. Delicious salads and sides. Coconut cake for dessert. You can't go wrong.

I had the best lemon drop martini ever! The food was great . The service was outstanding. We even got their famous coconut cake and the staff came out with a lit candle for my husband birthday. Great place , it’s no wonder they are one of the best steakhouse restaurants in NYC.
By the way I can’t believe people wrote bad reviews I mean you are eating at a classic NY steakhouse eating perfectly cooked high quality meat and you complain that your sauce on the side was not as you expected , or the portions were too big...I laughed so hard! Some people are hard to please.

Service and food was great however I asked for food to be wrapped up. When I got home, all the sides were wrapped and they forgot to wrap my half eaten steak...

My husband and I figured we would try Smith and Wollenksy once just to say we had. Huge mistake!

We sat down in a dining room that had seen better days, and after a while a nice man came to get us water. A few minutes later, a man walked up and basically shoved out a menu across the table while mumbling under his breath. We saw it was the wine menu, so we nicely said we wouldn't be needing that (we don't drink for religious reasons). He then brusquely shoved the regular menus into our hands and walked away without another word.

After a substantial wait, he came back to take our order. We ordered the calamari to start, then asked what sides he would recommend. He proceeded to sigh, roll his eyes, and simply list every side on the menu. We ordered the mac and cheese and the hash brown. My husband then asked which steak he recommended. The waiter again responded with an attitude. My husband got the ribeye and I got the filet mignon and shrimp special.

The calamari was mediocre; nothing special, nothing done particularly well. Some pieces were cooked better than others.

Our entrees came. My meal was SMOTHERED in a heavy butter sauce that was so thick and flavored it overwhelmed the meat. It looked like a layer of mucus on top. Even after doing my best to scrape it off, the sauce completely hid the flavor of both the steak and shrimp. The steak had a terrible mealy texture to it. My husband's didn't have the terrible sauce, but his steak was completely unmemorable. The mac & cheese tasted like it was from a supermarket, and the hash brown was literally worse than the diner on my street; not even salt was added to give it flavor. It was so dry I couldn't eat more than one bite.

Our waiter never came to check on how our meal was. We sat with our barely eaten food for more than 30 minutes before someone came and asked if we were done. At least 15 minutes later, the waiter asked if we wanted dessert & seemed offended when we declined. $200 for an awful night.

We were a party office. I was entertaining out of town family. They marched us upstairs to an isolated nook. So then we all walked down again to be reseated. Very annoying. I am a senior citizen native New Yorker-

The experience I received for restaurant week, was just as fantastic as a regular restaurant day, from the host to the servers and of course the food! Going back again for wine week can't wait, the hospitality at this restaurant is a plus!

This place never disappoints. It has the best Restaurant Week value. I enjoy a good steak and here it is always prepared as I request, a good sear and rare inside. We always find it hard to pass up the hash brown potatoes and the coconut cake and of course a nice glass of wine. I highly recommend this place, good food, service and value.

Everything was phenomenal. its crazy we came there for Restaurant week but we ended up dining from the regular dinner. We happy we did, the food was excellent, the server (I believe his name is Myle). Everything was phenomenal. I also want to shout out the hostess who was so hospitable, so engaging. When i went to the ladies room, I ran into her and told I was indecisive and ever thing she recommended I advised my business partners to try and we were so happy and so content. The 15 oz lobster tail, the branzino, the lemon pepper chicken, the pork chop, the mac and cheese, the hash, the creamed spinach. nothing was disappointing . Nothing. Everyone at the restaurant was attentive. The hostess, The bartender, the guy who walked us to our table , the waiter, the server. The ultimate prize should go to the Chef and the HR rep who hired everyone. LOL
I will be back !

i booked a table for 4 on NY Restaurant Week, but when we come they said i have to make a note or something that we’re coming for NYRW.
For NYRW we can only sit on the bar but it’s so packed and we had to wait 1 hour. So we decided to just eat like normal.
I don’t know what to say, it’s just kind of disappointed. Because I went to another restaurant during the Restaurant Week but none of them need to make a note and I just book like normal

Our waiter, Mr. Lin, was fantastic, right on point. Steaks were exactly as ordered, service was great, food was delicious. The restaurant week menu was amazing. Loved the coconut cake with passion fruit sauce. The ambience was just right, not too noisy, tables not too close together. A wonderful experience.

They are participating in Restaurant Week and all those tables for some reason are upstairs.

The service upstairs is really slow. The waiter took forever to take our orders, which when have an hour for lunch is not a good thing. By the time the desert came, we had to get it to go, as there was no time left.

Best steak anywhere in NYC. It was cooked to my exact specifications and was PERFECTION!
The appetizer that I and my dining companion had were the fried calamari, which were small but succulent and very tasty.
The dessert we had was the chocolate mousse cake which is worth the visit for any true chocoholic.
