About Smith & Wollensky - New York
The landmark Smith & Wollensky in New York City is located on the corner of Third Avenue and 49th Street, serving outstanding steakhouse fare that features USDA Prime steaks, dry aged and butchered on-premise. Opened in 1977, the original Smith & Wollensky has set the standard by which all other steakhouses are judged. The New York Times agrees, calling the restaurant “a steakhouse to end all arguments” and Gourmet said this is the “quintessential New York steakhouse.”
Although Smith & Wollensky has earned its reputation as the quintessential steakhouse, the menu is varied and offers many options beyond the signature exemplary steaks. Guests can also select from a variety of market-fresh seafood, poultry, and lamb. Delicious side dishes complete the meal, such as creamed spinach, hashed browns, and seasonal vegetables. The irresistible dessert selection ends the meal on a memorable note with a variety of decadent, housemade cakes, sorbets, and ice creams.

Smith & Wollensky - New York Ratings and Reviews
The service was great but I was pretty disappointed with my filet mignon... it was burned to a crisp and I ordered it medium rare so I’m not really sure what happened there but it was almost inedible. Every other time I’ve been here it’s been perfect, maybe it was just an off night?
I had a great experience in the past at S&W but on this occasion it was disappointing. The steak which was ordered medium rare was well done, beet and almost tasteless and the other dishes were so so. Won’t be going back unfortunately since it does have a distinctive ambiance.
We were SO disappointed . I have been a New Yorker my whole life and we are regulars at S & W. I was taking 6 people, out and we were all disappointed. The upstairs room was awful. We were in front of a window and freezing. The food was not much better than fair. So disappointed at a place my family has gone for years.
I was really looking forward to this but I was quite disappointed. The portions are so huge so we ended up paying so much for something we couldn’t finish - even though we ordered the smallest steaks. There was a lot of gristle on the steaks, they hadn’t been trimmed down, I don’t know if that’s their style though to retain flavour - and to be fair they did taste good. The broccoli had barely been cooked at all - I do like my veg crunchy but this was rock hard.
It was holiday season so the restaurant was really busy with big parties around us so we couldn’t actually hear each other and it felt quite chaotic. It would have been nice to have a table somewhere quieter especially as we had booked ages in advance.
They didn’t seem to sell wine by the glass which is a shame, my partner doesn’t drink and I didn’t want to have to order a 1/2 bottle to myself.
It was also freezing.
On line I knew this steakhouse was not inexpensive and may stop others from coming. Do not let this bother you. It is a very special place. I and my two dining partners ordered the seafood appetizer plate to share -- this is an expensive dish but enough huge prawns, lobster and crab to make us feel like we already had eaten our dinner. Two of us shared the Colorado Rib which was plenty to eat while our other guest ordered the filet which was seasoned and cooked to perfection. Nothing else comes on the plate so we ordered the truffle mashed potatoes which were delicious. However we could have done without the potato dish as we ate very little of it as we were too full to truly enjoy it. We passed on dessert even though the dessert tray was appealing. I had always wanted to eat at this location and was glad I did as this was probably the best meal I ever had in NYC.
My boyfriend and I went for dinner and it was a great experience. Wait staff was knowledgeable, friendly and professional. The food was well executed and delicious. Crab cakes and plaque filet minion for two, we truly enjoyed all of it. I haven’t been to SW for years and I was not disappointed!
Truly a great evening out.
I was very disappointed with the food in the night. Celebrating a birthday, it was a special outing. When paying $50+ for a steak, you expect it to be cooked according to the customer instruction. I did ask for a medium fillet but, even though very tender, it was over cooked. In hindsight, I should have sent it back. Not a great experience but here you go. Live and learn...
Smith & Wollensky is fantastic if you want a simple dinner that is done right. I ordered a filet mignon which was perfectly cooked and had absolutely no complaints. Three of us shared two sides and everything was very delicious. Our waiter offered my mother a special lobster and filet domination that wasn’t part of the menu. The restaurant is elegant and quaint. Very happy with our experience.
We were there on a Friday evening surrounded by business people who it appeared were known to the waiter. We admitted this was our first time there but ordered each course, except for appetizers, for a party of 3. However, we were ignored throughout the dinner, not attended to, while the waiter laughed and conversed with other parties. We waited for 1/2 hr for the check until we grabbed a different waiter. I paid in cash so I wouldn't have to be there waiting to pay.
We were there 4.5 hrs. That's outrageous. Never going back.
