Smith & Wollensky - New York
Although Smith & Wollensky has earned its reputation as the quintessential steakhouse, the menu is varied and offers many options beyond the signature exemplary steaks. Guests can also select from a variety of market-fresh seafood, poultry, and lamb. Delicious side dishes complete the meal, such as creamed spinach, hashed browns, and seasonal vegetables. The irresistible dessert selection ends the meal on a memorable note with a variety of decadent, housemade cakes, sorbets, and ice creams.

The best! As always.
Great time. Thank you.
Meal was great. My only complaint is they need to sharpen their steak knives.
I’ve been going here for decades and truly love it. On this occasion, an important one, we had a bad experience. Food was overcooked, then under-cooked, all served at once, amateur hour stuff. They were very busy. It was all forgivable at an average restaurant. S&W is far from average. They took it off the check to their credit without a moment of hesitation. I’d go back in a heartbeat and will after the holidays, but, busy season or not, once you’re charging stratospheric prices for heavenly food to a very loyal clientele, it has to be near-perfect, every time. Every other review I’ve ever left for S&W has been five stars. Go, it’s highly unlikely you will ever be disappointed here.
It was a birthday celebration but I didn’t remind the waiter so no big deal.
Overall the service was horrible and the food was not worth the value. Steaks overcooked. Sometimes it’s a little too obvious how servers would rather attend to large tables filled with men than 2 women.
I was really hoping this was going to be a special night. Of all the restaurants we could have went to in NYC we went here because of what we thought was going to be a memorable experience.
Sadly it’s not the memory we wanted to have. We’ll still with the new and upcoming restaurants who actually care about your business. Not surprised now that this restaurant has closed other locations. Just a bad experience all the way around.
Service was horrible servers were grumpy. If this is suppose to be a high end steak house you would expect to have a personal touch and welcoming feeling. Steak was cooked right but had no flavor. Pork chop was underwhelming, but lobster was good but when arent they?
For the price I would go elsewhere.
Service was great as always. Cajun ribeye is always a winner, and just enough holiday decoration to put you in a good mood.
This was a business dinner. We were asked to leave our table shortly after we finished eating. Won’t.be back.
Food is excellent. Never disappoints
This is place for special occasions.
Food was cooked to perfection and tasted good. Wait staff was a little slower than us should have been. Enjoyable experience overall.
I asked our server for his recommendation on which steak could be cooked to well done. I have a medical condition that requires all meat to be cooked at 160 or above. He recommended the rib eye. I ordered it well done. It came out in a puddle of blood. I told the server and he sent it back to be cooked more. It came back in a smaller pool of blood. I showed the waiter and he got the manager. The manager sent it back and it came back looking like charcoal!!
I should have know better than to order a steak. That’s my fault. But it was a terrible presentation for a world renowned steakhouse.
The steak was the best I’ve had, all round great night
Wife & Mother in Law had a great evening. Richard is the best.
Overall a great meal as usual. However, we had the pecan pie sundae for desert and both of us were disappointed. Two tiny pieces of pie with a heaping of vanilla ice cream. My preference would have been a nice slice of pie with a scoop of ice cream. Other then that everything was great.
Back after 3 years, nice to return to great service and food, thank you
Overpriced, overrated and overcooked
Sometimes one forget history repeats itself. Unfortunately this adversely affected our our sole night in .NYC.
If I'm not mistaken this is the flagship of what is now a nationwide chain. I last ate at his location thirty years ago. That meal caused me to not eat at any other of their locations for three decades.
We're in NYC for one night for the granddaughter to bankrupt us at the American Girl Doll Store. Following hours of hair and nail appointments at the doll store (for both child and the doll) we were exhausted. So rather than go downtown to my NYC steakhouse of preference we simply walked around the corner from our hotel on Lexington for an early dinner.
The experience hadn't changed in three decades. The steaks were tough, even my Pittsburgh rare sirloin and my wife's filet mignon not a "buttery" bite anywhere. I'm still not sure of the flavor, which made me wonder what was on the grill before they put the steak on. The best was the granddaughters hamburger ordered well and simply burnt.
Like out of town idiots we ate paid and left a tip. Why we accept food when we're on a trip which we would loudly complain about at home I will never understand.
Absolutely terrible service and food. We explained to our waiter one of the party was gluten free, her soup came out covered in croutons (She couldn't eat) Her main came out with a side he had told us was GF he dumped it on the table and said actually you cant eat this (Why bring it out and still charge us?!) Our porter house steak ($59 each) came out raw when we asked for it very well done. He came over and saw we hadn't eaten a thing he snatched the steak and said well I guess we will cook it for you. Came back medium - didn't eat a thing!! Shocking customer service. we asked for our change at the bill and he disappeared and never came back. Would never book again!!
We went to Smith and Wollensky with a last minute reservation for my son’s 21st Birthday. Upon arrival, the host was incredibly exuberant about my son’s birthday as was the hostess. They mentioned a special dessert and drink after dinner. Dinner was delicious and we had a fantastic waiter, Tony D. The service was exceptional and pleasant. After dinner, Tony brought out a slice of cheesecake with a candle and we sang Happy Birthday to the delight of my son. We were then asked about an after dinner drink which we readily accepted. The cheesecake is absolutely the best we’ve ever had! And the drinks were amazing as well. We can’t express how wonderful our experience was and are so thrilled that we chose Smith and Wollensky as a last minute choice to celebrate a milestone birthday! We will be back soon!
Fantastic service, fantastic food, great place for a special occasion!
This is the second time we enjoyed your restaurant . We will continue as the years go by. Besides the food the service really is excellent .
We had a Primer Rib and a Porterhouse shared between 4 people. Amazing steaks and an appropriate portion. Especially considering we also had hash browns and creamed spinach as sides, and the fried calamari for appetizer. I am looking forward to my next visit!
Excellent steakhouse dans un cadre sympathique. Viande tendre et goûteuse. Belle carte des vins et service empressé.
I got a reservation about 3 weeks in advance for 7pm on Thanksgiving Day. The restaurant is FAMOUS for the prime-rib steak. We arrived and were served drinks. Upon ordering we were informed that they had run out of prime-rib...WTF...that's like going to Red Lobster and being told they ran out of lobster...like going to McDonalds and being told they don't have any more burgers. Who is managing this place? Is it there first job out of high school? How do you run out of your FAMOUS dish on Thanksgiving? Didn't you know that's what people would order?
Stay away from this restaurant unless you want to be disappointed.
Great Food great drinks great wine. Service is top notch.
Excellent, service great, warmly greeted , quickly seated..
S&W does an amazing Thanksgiving Day meal. This is the 4th or 5th year we’ve gone for the special meal and it doesn’t disappoint. Get there early though 3-4 pm. After that and they’ll start running out of menu items
I took my family there for Thanksgiving Dinner. Service was average at best. Forgot the salads. The sides were great. We ordered the spinach, onion rings, and mac and cheese. They were very good. But we ordered the porterhouse for two and it was very underwhelming. It was tough and had no flavor. I couldn't believe it. A $150.00 steak that is worse that something I would get at a chain restaurant. I will not be back.
Still one of the best steakhouses in NYC.
Always a great meal. Nothing like sharing a porterhouse.
Great service and better food!
Made reservations 3 months in advance, table was not ready had to wait 1/2 hr and was seated by the kitchen and a post
We had to ask for water. The waiter walked by our table without asking if we needed anything over and over again. The food was fair-my steak was cold and the sides weren’t brought at the same time as the main. We won’t be back. There are too many amazing steak restaurants in NYC.
We were looking forward to this dinner since we booked it in September but it was pretty underwhelming which was a shame as it was $270! We didn’t feel there was a good overall ambience - there was a few large groups there who seemed to be really enjoying themselves but as a twosome not so much. Waiter was extremely professional but I didn’t feel very welcoming.
Food is really expensive and the presentation didn’t live up to the price- a steak was presented on a side plate with nothing. Any sides or any garnish was extra and we weren’t asked if we wanted sauces and none were brought out. Paying $52 for a steak I would have expected this.
Daniel our server was amazing ! The ambiance was fair table spacing would be nice . That way I don’t have to hear the foul language coming from the table across me while trying to enjoy my dinner . Floor is slippery be careful . Coconut cake was to die for!!! Overall the tables being too close to each other was the only bad thing out of my experience tonight .
Steaks had no flavor. Filet mug on was not lean
I just want to say that Smith & Wollensky was recommended to me so I decided to give them a try. Everything was great but the only drawback to me was the steak for two was not 44oz. It was much smaller than that. Other Steakhouses have bigger steaks and will tell you that their steaks are only 20oz steaks!
I would recommend at least giving them a try once for the experience.
Great steak great service desserts were delish.
Old school steak house from an era gone by. Cuts were perfect, mashed potatoes were delicate and fluffy and house blend red is FANTASTIC and a must try. Will most definitely return, if only for the service, let alone the food.
