Smith & Wollensky - New York
Although Smith & Wollensky has earned its reputation as the quintessential steakhouse, the menu is varied and offers many options beyond the signature exemplary steaks. Guests can also select from a variety of market-fresh seafood, poultry, and lamb. Delicious side dishes complete the meal, such as creamed spinach, hashed browns, and seasonal vegetables. The irresistible dessert selection ends the meal on a memorable note with a variety of decadent, housemade cakes, sorbets, and ice creams.

Love Smith and Wollensky. Steaks and apps were great but the sides weren't great this time. Sauteed spinach and asparagus were flavorless boiled veggies. No salt, pepper, olive oil, garlic, nothing. Flavorless. Hash browns and mashed potatoes were good.
Classic steakhouse that must be visited. Went here with my brother whom I often go to steakhouses with. We both agree that you must go. Steaks and sides are on point and ambience is so perfectly New York.
You should have plans to order steak if you go. That is their specialty. My salad was very good and the fish I ordered was sub par. It should have been excellent for the price. We liked the place otherwise. It is a NYC institution which we enjoyed experiencing. I especially liked that the tables are well spaced and the acoustics are very good.
I ordered a filet. I wanted it cooked medium. It came out an hour later with no seasoning, cold, and tough. The best thing we had was the Mac and cheese. The broccoli was also cold and not cooked long enough. Thankfully the manager took care of the steak and also a glass of wine which was so kind of him. We appreciated his kind gesture. Maybe they were just having a bad / busy night, but for a restaurant known for steaks, mine was not good at all.
Place is overated - Many better steakhouses in town
A really FAT steak where at least 70% was fat and the rest meat....
Food was delicious. Service was fun and wonderful. We had a great night and will be back again.
Delicious food. Perfectly cooked steak. Amazing servers. Definitely going back.
This place is not unlike other 'high end' steak houses...limited menu...over priced...over rated. I will complement the staff - all were cordial and accomodating. My wife and I spent over $300 for a shrimp cocktail, 2 garden salads, 2 entrees, a side of spinach, a couple of drinks...worth it? I leave that up to you.
My friends for over 30years and I get together twice a year. We chose S/W and we were not disappointed. The service, from the front door to desert was excellent and the food was phenomenal. One friend ordered his steak well done (shameful) and even that was fork tender. I will recommend S/W to anyone and I intend on returning. Thanks for a great night!
Original Smith and Wolinsky was fun to visit, meet waiters who have been there 30 years plus. I ordered the strip and it was just ok. Tough and not very favorable. Added their steak sauce to help it. Not sure if it was a poor cut of meat or typical. Probably for the value, I’ll try other steakhouses
Great food, great service, always consistent
The food was divine! Obviously a meat eaters dream...the service was perfect, the the ambience was fabulous. We were seated in a booth and you can hear conversations of other tables nearby though
Some of the waiters are not too friendly but that maybe a cultural thing. There were 5 young men who were sitting next to us who got into a somewhat loud argument but the Maitre d’ did not notice. The food was superb.
Everything was great down to the last bite. We will definitely come again next time we are in NYC!
The steak which I came for was excellent, so was the mozzarella and tomato salad. The sides were ok but nothing to write home about. Service was friendly but somehow cumbersome because of the English of some of the immigrant waiters (no offense).
Atmosphere was pleasant although a bit loud.
All in all this was a good once in a lifetime experience since it was very expensive.
Steak was good, but had to be the stalest bread I've ever had at any restaurant. Could have broken my teeth on the rollls. It was like it was several days old. Perplexing, considering I've never had an issue before
Great food and overall experience.
Absolutely the worst restaurant in nyc I’ve ever been to. Service was miserable tables are way to close to eachother and the food quality was absolutely terrible. I’ve eaten better steak from the grocery store. Highly recommend you do not go here. Don’t waste your time and money. Do not bring your girl here either especially the first date she will probably dump you .. goodluck
I used to love their steaks but last night, the steaks lacked flavor. The porterhouses was very tender but did not have any taste, extremely bland. It was just missing something, besides salt. Sadly disappointed.
We love Smith & Wollensky, service is always top notch and the food is great
Well-known steak restaurant and delivers a very high standard of food. It was recommended to me by a colleague so I was expecting a great experience. Service is excellent. Wine by the glass was surprisingly cheap although if you want to spend a fortune the wine list will allow you to do that too!
We walked into the Grill by mistake, our booking was for the main restaurant and in hindsight I wish we had just stayed in the Grill. In the restaurant we were taken upstairs to what can only be described as a soulless room. One small window and some random art and photos on the walls. The A/C was super-charged but the waiters adjusted that when asked.
So ambience was a major let down - when you are paying the best part of $100 for steak and two sides you expect a bit more.
All that said the steaks were outstanding - we both had 32oz rib steaks (bone in) - and the sides were excellent too - the mac 'n cheese especially was a huge portion and tasted amazing.
We failed to finish everything and they do give doggy bags.
Service was excellent, good ratio of staff to diners and they paid us just the right amount of attention.
To sum up, we loved the meal but they really need to do something with the decor in the upstairs restaurant.
The overall experience was amazing from the time we walked into the door. The service, atmosphere, and food is better than what we expected.
upset the lack of tartar in the menu. steaks as always on top. huge portions of the side dish, you can safely take for two
I love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. Everyone loved the fillet mignon. Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable."
Excellent in all aspects. We enjoyed this restaurant We will be sure to go there when in NY
Buen servicio y excelente comida
The lobster, though large, was excellent and served ver well, shelled by the waiter. The sirloin, ordered medium was tough; that shouldn’t be. The breads were excellent, but the spinach was too boring.
nice place, good food but a little expensive ,i appreciate the courtesy of the service.
I had very High expectations, but except the birthday cake kindly offered by the manager that I very appreciate:), for the rest I am very disappointed about the service .
We had a bottle of champagne and was hot and the ice bag was full of water and the maitre dropped on the table making the table wet :((
The employers every time that moved the gueridon they falled off the platters.
I’m a quality Italian meat lovers and considering that Smith & Wollensky be part of the same group I was sure to find the same high quality, no way .
I’ll never come back !
The staff was extremely accommodating and made my anniversary very special. Wonderful restaurant for a date night or special occasion. :)
Smith and Wollensky's is one of the best restaurants in New York City! I absolutely love it for the food, the wait staff and excellent bartenders. Great job!
Outstanding ambience and the fillet mug on was the best I have ever had! The service was good and prices quite ok!
S&W has always been a good choice for beef and I always bring my sons when they visit me from California.
However, I have noticed other steakhouses which are considered comparable in quality to be less expensive. My order of prime rib rose several dollars compared to the last time I was there.
I will try these places also.
Steak was just barely warm, waiter paid little attention to the table, took 40 minutes to get the bill after meal was finished. The restaurant so crowded the waiters had difficulty navigating the aisle without bumping into chairs and noise level loud.
Would not revisit this restaurant.
Last night was a bad night. Smith & Wollensky is our go-to restaurant when we are in NYC. This visit, however, was very disappointing. We were put at a terrible table right by the kitchen. Our steaks came out very undercooked, the broccoli was just about raw, and the caesar salads looked like they used only the very cores of the heads of lettuce. This is SO unusual. For the $ 300.00 bill (plus tip), we should have walked away extremely satisfied (like we usually do).
We will give them another try because we typically are EXTREMELY happy.
Good food and nice atmosphere but not value of the money requested.
First time at flagship location. Table a bit small. Waiter missed my order for salad, but there was so much food I didn’t miss it. Aside from that, very friendly.
Bar: terrible service. Following a wait of 15 minutes without being able to get the attention of the bartender, we gave up and sat down in the restaurant.... Significantly sub standard!
Restaurant: food and service are okay!
