Smith & Wollensky Boston – Back Bay Ratings and Reviews
This was a beautiful, historic building and I’m glad I went. The wait staff was friendly and helpful, with the exception of my waiter who was not able to recommend items when I told him what I wanted as a first time guest. He just left me to figure it out on my own as there were specials I wanted more explanation about. The bread looked great, but was warmed over and quite heavy for what I'd expect a good yeast bread to be. I ordered filet and lobster, both were overcooked. I did not complain – I would expect a place like this to present their very best the first time. At the prices they charge they should know without a doubt what “medium rare” is and how to steam lobster. The coconut cake was heavy and dry – I did not experience the same quality others mention in their reviews. The wine – their Private Reserve was the best.
Smith & Wollensky is a fabulous place to dine! Not only is it a friendly and welcoming place, but the food is delicious! Our server was Sherryl and she was wonderful. She chatted us up at the appropriate time and was very efficient! I would highly recommend Smith & Wollensky, Back to anyone who asks.
Excellent Steak (of course). We had the Filet Mignon, with sides of creamed spinach and green beans. All 3 were excellent. Our servers were attentive. We would have had dessert, which looked delicious, but we had an a performance to attend. Great location, near to parking and the theater district.
I was very disappointed in our dining experience. We have enjoyed Smith and Wollensky in New York, Las Vegas, and Columbus. It's one of our favorite restaurants when we travel. The Angry Shrimp was good. The steak was very tough and the augratin potatoes were extremely runny. The biggest disappointment was my salmon. It was not well seasoned and tasted extremely "fishy". I am quite sure I will never eat salmon again. I have never sent food back, perhaps I should have. Maybe things weren't up to the Smith and Wollensky standard because we arrived when you first opened. At any rate, I'm not sure I will continue to be a loyal customer in our future travels.
It's in a beautiful castle, so even if the food hadn't been perfect, the building and the ambience would have made the trip worthwhile. In a week of very good dining in Boston, Smith and Wollensky was head & shoulders above the rest. The place was recommended to me by a Bostonian on the train and I was so very glad that I listened to him! It isn't located at the waterfront, nor near touristy sites I was visiting, but it is only a block and a half from the nearest MBTA station and well worth the trip. Service was exceptional and the waiters made excellent recommendations. The filet with angry shrimp was perfectly flavored and melted in the mouth. The old Cuban cocktail was a great accompaniment, & the custard and wine, as recommended by the waiter were delightful. An excellent wine selection is available. All meals are served with a loaf of mouthwatering bread that is topped with a salty blend almost indescribably good. Best meal I had during a week in Boston. I will return!
Beer was bitter
I mentioned to server and he didn't remove from bill
Filet was cooked as I asked however lacked flavor
Filet from Capital Grille and Flemings better seasoned
After spending $225 plus tip I would have thought beer could have been removed as courtesy
My wife and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary and had dinner here. It was perfect. Server Amy is highly recommended, she is very thoughtful and is an expert at being courteous and professional. The food is of the highest quality, as is the service. Second to none. They gave us special attention throughout the evening. It was an exceptional dining experience.
The service was excellent. Our waitress Amy was attentive early one often. I passively mentioned in this forum that the occasion was my birthday. Without any cue from my husband, any surprised us with a birthday cake(a slice fit for 4!).
One of my best experiences in a restaurant in a long time.
First time visiting the restaurant and a little underwhelmed by my steak, was expecting something fabulous but rather got a somewhat overly fatty cut, and the onion rings, well Burger King would have been as good. The other sides though were fabulous and by dining partners steak was perfect! Service was exceptional.
I am puzzled by the 1 Star and 2 Star posts because they are absolutely the converse of every experience we have had here. First experience was having our wedding reception there last year. Everything from the crab cakes, wild mushrooms, garlic rosemary bread, filet and dry aged bone-in rib eye is just out of this world. All of our guests, even the most finicky ones, raved that they have NEVER had food so exquisite at a wedding reception. The one menu item that we elected not provide our guests was the chicken because it was bland. (**side note: This is a fabulous restaurant known for their Steak, not their chicken and our expectations are commensurate with that.) Our subsequent visits throughout the year are nothing less than phenomenal even when they change their seasonal menu offerings. The staff is always top notch, courteous, friendly, greeting guests with a smile. I can't even begin to explain what it is like to dine in the ambiance of a very skillfully appointed Castle. The price?? Yep, it's right in line with the food, the staff, and dining at a renovated 126 year old armory in the down town Metro-Boston area. You have to take this observation for what it's worth,,, my observation. I have dined on 6 of the 7 continents of this planet. Smith and Wollensky will go down in my dining history as the greatest dining establishment EVER. My only suggested improvement would be offer Wagyu, even if only seasonally. I have always shied away from mentioning waitresses / waiters people by name on internet reviews. You give a good review then all of a sudden THEY become the most requested people for other peoples' dining experience and we can't get them anymore. (30%, not even close) Nevertheless, two people who deserve a lion's share of credit are Amy and Dean. They don't treat you like a customer; no, to them you are La Familia. (Family) Since the menu does change overtime they will give you the inside scoop, what's new, what is good, and what is insanely good
The food was absolutely amazing. We had steaks, salmon, truffle mac & cheese, spinach, etc. Everything melts in your mouth with wonderful flavoring. Even something basic as caesar salad was amazing because of the cheese. The chef was very accommodating to my 4-year old nephew, who is a foodie and likes fine dining. We ordered him a chicken caesar salad (adult size), which is not on the menu w/chicken. The chef improvised by providing roasted chicken off the bone which looked and tasted amazing (he barely left any on the plate). Of course for dessert you can not leave there without having the chocolate cake. The icing on the whole experience was our wonderful waiter Rich. He was patient, attentive, accommodating, friendly and had a great sense of humor that kept us laughing and smiling the whole night. The Manager was also great as he came by to check on us and discussed the selection of Rose Wines on the wine flight tasting menu.
I've eaten at other smith&wollenski and was looking forward to a perfect steak, the meat was lean and chewy, very disappointed to say the least.
Service was great ,but I've grilled much better ribeyes from my local grocery store.
Hopefully they get the quality back.
Smith & Wollensky, as usual, never disappoints! If you want the best filet mignon in Boston, try Smith & Wollensky, Back Bay. As you enter, the atmosphere is very welcoming from the greeting at the door to our waitress Sherryl. The food is always delicious and service impeccable! I am already looking forward to our next visit.
Not to be naive, because I knew going in that the price list was going to be somewhat stiff. But my friends from out of town probably weren't prepared for the costs. But our server informed us that sides were ample for two people, so that provided some level of flexibility. Now these folks were from Texas, so they know a thing or two about steak. They said the meat was quite good, so that's saying something. They were happy, so I was happy.
The resturant t was suburb. The food was great. But most importantly Amy and Sheryl were outstanding in there service and attitude. They were superlative in every way. I tremendous dinning experience. We will be back and we will ask for Amy and Sheryl.
