Smith & Wollensky Boston – Back Bay Ratings and Reviews
We came with high expectations as the place had been recommended by friends and we had a pleasant dining experience at S and W in Chicago. Sadly the S and W Nack Bay could not live up to the expected standards. While the food was fine the service lacked quality. For such an expensive place you would expect impeccable service, what we experienced in an almost empty restaurant was horrible. Waiters leaned over us and half the table to pour more water into the glass of the person across instead of walking around the table to serve each of us individually, although there was plenty of walking space.
After talking our order the waiter came back and barked at one of our friends that they were out of lamb and he should choose another entree - without an apology and the menu to find another entree. That was very rude, should our friend have remembered the menu? And shouldn‘t waiters in such an upscale place know if they are out of something BEFORE people order?
After we had our appetizers another waiter came and brought us the dessert menu —- after we told him that we are still waiting for our entrees (!!!) he made an attempt of a joke and left.
We really had the worst waiters and service ever that night (all in relation to the price of the food) and will not go back to any S and W restaurant and can definitely not recommend the one at back bay.
Totally unimpressed. Very inattentive waitperson. We had to ask for water and even steak knives! My husband's $50 steak was cooked unevenly, tasted funny (burnt butter?) and not at all what a rib eye should look like. It took about 20 minutes for the waitperson to ask how our meals were. By that time, I was done and it was too late for my husband to get a replacement unless we wanted to eat separately. We ate there 5 years ago and it was great. What on earth happened to this place? If your prices are going to be high please back them up with quality food ! Will never return.
This restaurant gives the W&S brand a bad name. The steak was dry and unflavorful. The fries were completely soggy even though we had them redone. The service was inattentive, forgetful, indifferent and server mostly could not be found. No wonder this place was half empty on New Years Eve. Below average and waste of money.
Our son selected Smith & Wollensky for his 21st birthday celebration dinner. Service was excellent. Our server Amy was very attentive and did a great job! Nice restaurant for special occasions. Steak was good. Everything is a la carte. Very expensive. Enjoyed the old castle and took a little tour. Very nice!
As usual, I continue to be pleased with Smith & Wollensky. The atmosphere is always very welcoming, the food is always delicious and the service is superb! Amy was our server and she was excellent, attentive and friendly. We are greeting at the door and I always feel right at home. I would highly recommend Smith & Wollensky, Back Bay and, of course, Amy!
I am SORROWFULLY reporting that the ONE of many things I am licking my chops for, the ‘Wild Mushrooms’ menu item has been replaced. The insane Wild Mushroom menu add on is no longer on the menu,,,,,,, even ‘off menu’. I cannot even begin to exclaim my dismay that (aside from the yummy steaks) the one thing that keeps me making reservations year after year being the Wild Mushrooms is no longer available. If this restaurant wants to keep my multi—year visits, and personal recommendation to friends, family, and online,,,, bring back the Wild Mushrooms, you can improve and replace other items on the menu. Perhaps you, the chiefs at Smith, don’t understand. There are some things that are cardinal, pivotal, to you being you. I have travelled the world and dined on all of the seven continents. There is one place, ONE PLACE, that I have experienced the ridiculously good Wild Mushrooms. Capital Grill, Cafe Escadrille, Morton’s, Ruth’s Chris, Texas Land and Cattle, Bern’s, all of them serve a great piece of beef. The one thing that sets the great apart from the truly exceptional is what goes with the piece of meat. What are the sides, what is the service like? Yes Smith has some of the best service I have ever seen, but aside from a great piece of meat; which others have, then the sides really set one apart from another. Bring back the Wild Mushrooms lest my friends and I will start going to other places with sub-par sides but are far more convenient to get to.
My family and I had Christmas dinner here and had an outstanding meal, and Sherryl our server was one of the best we have had at restaurants. She was pleasant and made our experience totally enjoyable...and even gave us a complimentary dessert.
We hope to be back soon to enjoy a faboulous meal at Smith & Wollensky (Back Bay Castle).

Wonderful evening to celebrate my mother's 75th birthday (on Christmas Eve). Tables were spread out enough on the second floor that the room stayed quiet enough for easy conversation yet felt lively. Service was fantastic and food was cooked exactly as ordered. Our server also helped keep my 3 year old entertained and well-behaved - no small feat. For her birthday, my mother was treated to an outrageously large piece of chocolate cake that fed all 6 of us.
Four of us gathered for a family Christmas get together. We enjoyed a drink at the bar while waiting for our reservation. Bar staff welcoming and knowledgeable. We were seated in a cozy rotund room with a fireplace surrounded by Boston history. Amy was our waitress, assisted by Dean, both long term employees who made great recommendations for food and drink. Excellent, friendly service with a smile. They filled us in on the history of this beautiful former armory and its special role as home to Smith & Wollensky. Really loved this place and would highly recommend- outstanding steaks and service. We'll be back! Thank you.
with so many choices, this place needs to up it's game a bit... steaks were VERY fatty. a sirloin with fat running thru the middle of it and being told at 6pm "we're out of baked potatoes" ... at a Steak House!!!??? this certainly ain't S&W NYC or even Cap Grill
Food is incredible (esp. the coffe and cocoa rubbed steak), worth the price and any commute. Great for special events/dates. Fantastic waiters/waitresses. Hostess was lively and welcoming. The whole restaurant is decked out in holiday gear and looks excellent. A very fun experience.
We celebrated two birthdays and had an amazing time! Our waitresses Sherryl & Amy made our experience a ton of fun. Our food was excellent. The restaurant even went above and beyond for our occasion by comping our dessert! This wasn’t our first trip there and it won’t be the last!
Great food & drink like you'd expect from Smith & Wollensky and the setting for this particular restaurant is absolutely awesome. The restaurant is located in an old armory building which looks like a castle; right in downtown Boston. Perfect for any special occasion.
We enjoyed a delicious dinner - the bone-in filet was great. It was my daughter's 7th birthday, and she loved it. The hostess and waiter took great care of us and made her feel special. She was so happy. She has a number of allergies, and they were able to accommodate her needs. Our waiter was Paul, and he was excellent!
we were seated in the back room, not the main room. There was no ambience. It felt like where the staff might have meetings and/or dinner. Not a place where you would seat a guest. Lighting was horrible as well. Food was fine, but for the cost - I would recommend Boston Chops anytime over this location. After dinner we asked to look in the main room - which was much nicer and more lively. Being seated here would have made for a nicer overall experience, but again- no need to go back. Was always very intrigued by the building and terribly disappointed.
We had a 7:15 reservation but arrived at 6:30. The Hostess was very nice and stated It was not a problem. We were seated right away and had a wonderful waitress. We told her we were here for a wonderful meal and to relax. The meal was excellent and we never felt rushed. We've been here numerous times and will be back again.
Restaurant was nice, however service was less than ideal. We ate next to a large table that went uncleaned or bussed for our entire meal. No specials were offered , took a very long time to get a refill on our wine and water and the check came in a brochure.
The steaks were cooked quite well, but an extra charge just to have is seasoned seemed a bit rediculous.
We have been to S&W many times and meal always very good. Not so on this occasion...... more hit or miss. House salad was fair ( some wilted lettuce). Twin filets were excellent, crab cakes had lots of meat but were dry. Spinach side was very good; potatoes au Groton poor. Service was excellent as were hostess and manager. At this price point, expected better
