Slate Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
Slate is a neighborhood gem. Tried the Chefs Valencia paella and had to return for more. My date had the seafood paella and I the vegetable. The paella was flavored to perfection and the rice was firm and flavorful. The vegetable were fresh and crisp and the seafood abundant. My starter was a green soup which was light and flavorful. My date enjoyed a fresh arugula salad with grated cheese and house dressing. The red wine t compliment the meal was superb.
We had such high hopes! But the place was empty when we got there (on a Saturday night), and the loud pop music was unexpected and took away from the wine bar atmosphere. The food was okay, and the wine list was short and pricey.
Not some terrible experience, but we will not go back. There are plenty of wonderful spots to get wine and good food in the city!
The duck spring roll was great, but otherwise the food was fair to good. The service was good, notwithstanding that there were 2 new servers training and the chef was helping out with table service. In fact, I think the service would have been better if the chef had stayed in the kitchen - he was quite annoying, was not at all welcoming, and seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. Not worth going back.
Unfortunately, I did not care for this place. We were the only table in the loft area and service was SLOW! My water glass had lipstick on it, and my $30 filet mignon came out cold. It took so long to my food I ate it anyway out if fear that it would take twice as long to get a new steak. I can't honestly recommend this place due to my experience, but maybe it was just a bad night?!?!?
I have been to Slate for many special occasions from birthday parties to Easter Sunday brunch so there was no question this would be the perfect place to take family and meet friends the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. With a larger group of people (6-7) the owner/head chef Danny was able to make excellent recommendations on the wine knowing we were ultimately there for his famous paella but still wanted to relax and hang out with our loved ones. When it came time to order dinner we ordered one of each of his paellas (vegetarian, seafood, and Valencian) so everyone at the table could try all and debate which was best (we couldn’t decide on one.) When the food came out those at other tables with larger parties quickly followed suit in doing the same thing. After dinner Danny was able to recommend some excellent shareable deserts for the table and a lovely desert wine. Overall the experience was perfect for the evening. My family was able to catch up with family friends while enjoying paella, wine, and service at a quality that you can’t get elsewhere in DC. Well definitely be back!
Love the sommelier tastings at Slate! They never fail to disappoint, this time it was a superb Ribera and Rueda selection. We booked at 9:30 and the place was still packed, very lively atmosphere.
Chef Danny does a great job at cooking amazing food and selecting outstanding wines, all reasonably priced. And he is great at walking the room and making everybody feel welcomed and special. One of our favorite restaurants in DC.
I went for evening drinks and light snacks with friends, and had the most memorable time. Our evening began with a tasting menu of their best wines recommended by their Chef & Sommelier. The flights of red wine from Portugal, Argentina, France, to California were paired well with the cheese and charcuterie platter. I have a sweet tooth, so the addition of the marinated cherries and pineapples that were added to our cheese platter was divine. Our night did not consist of much more food, but the experience in all is what made the night so great. The wine selections were varied and at great prices, a win win! The ambiance in the dinning area was intimate enough to not hear my neighbors at the table next to me, but also so lively and somewhat informal. The staff were attentive, knowledgeable and extremely friendly. The owner and chef made his rounds and ensured that we enjoyed our time.
The experience that the restaurant provided made it that much better to sit with a few girlfriends, enjoy exquisite wine, delicious snacks and an evening full of laughs!
I joined a few friends for a Sommelier Wine Tasting event and it was great! Danny and all of his staff were very knowledgeable about the wines being offered and even helped us pair our food choices to go with the offerings. As always a fun night at Slate!
My husband and I tried out this restaurant based on a recommendation from a friend who lives in D.C. We aren't often in the city, but when we are, we are always on the look-out for cute new places to go. As wine lovers who lived in Europe for 25 years, we happily surprised by Slate's wine selection. The food and atmosphere were also wonderful. As a German who loves to cook - I was shocked to see spaetzle on the menu, but they were really well done with a fun twist (they added duck confit). Great local with, good wine and food. My husband and I will for sure be back.
Whether you are looking for the perfect spot for a private event, romantic evening out or happy hour - Slate has got you covered. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the food/drinks, they have a wonderful wine selection and fabulous daily & happy hour specials.
I love Slate. The paella is truly award winning, the staff is incredibly knowledgeable about wine, and the overall experience is always amazing.
I’ve taken my work team here to impress, my friends for a fun night out, and even a romantic evening with my better half. This is a perfect spot if you love great wine and food.
Went for the restaurant week brunch to try something new and affordable. Beyond one choice per selection (or two for main course) you were required to pay an additional $4. The starter was two donut holes which were good but were literally two pieces of 1" fried dough on a plate. I ordered eggs benedict, which were fine, but my companion ordered the chicken and waffle. The waffle was dry and over cooked while the two pieces of chicken were undercooked, unfortunately, he hadn't realized it until the last two bites when blood was sweating out. The dessert was two cookies, easily of chain supermarket quality. We were so unimpressed and didn't want to cause a scene that we just waited to finish what we could and get out. I've never felt so disappointed by restaurant week or by a restaurant before. I left feeling like it was a scam, I don't think they should be allowed to advertise within restaurant week if they continue to operate like that.
Great place! Waiter was very nice but seemed to have a lot of tables and running around a lot. Got our drink flavors wrong a couple times but didn't ding him for it because it seemed like they were short staffed. Food was very good and the restaurant week menu was well worth it!
We were underwhelmed by Slate. The staff was very kind and the cocktails were delicious, but for the price we could have had a much better meal elsewhere in the city. It was restaurant week, which can sometimes affect food quality, so maybe it is better at other times. We probably won't be back to find out.
We were looking for A casual place to grab some dinner and had noticed this place the day before. It is in the old spot where Austin Grill used to be. Just being Restaurant week, they had 3 courses prix fixe. All the items are on the regular menu. The food was very good...the ceviche was fresh and tasty, the burger was delicious. Cooked to perfection and served with nicely done thin fries. Chocolate mousse for dessert.
My mom was in town visiting so of course we had to stop by Slate! We meant to grab a glass of wine and move on, but ended up staying most of the evening there. It felt like we were treated like royalty with very attentive staff! The food was simply spectacular with a unique flavor profile that I have yet to find elsewhere in the city. It's obvious to me that they really care about the experience of their diners and the good that they serve. We'll definitely be back!
Walking into Slate you are commonly greeted by owner and executive chef Danny so just there you start off with an experience uncommon for the DC restaurant scene. You are warmly welcomed and seated wherever you choose whether it's at the bar for a more social experience, at a dining table for more privacy, or at the front open window to take in the fresh air of the morning or evening. Their brunch of $15 bottomless mimosas and bloody Mary's is a deal that is hard to come by for the exceptional quality. Their food menu carefully offers something for everyone. From savory to sweet, breakfast to lunch, traditional to original, there is always an option for everyone. Their lunch and dinner options feature the best Chef Danny has to offer ranging from his award winning paella to his hand crafted burgers. If you are more interested in a causal drink their specialty cocktails are perfectly mixed and having two sommeliers around means you can't go wrong with the wine selection. Slate Wine Bar and Bistro makes for the perfect girls night with glasses of wine, to impressing a date with its intimate setting, to a great place to bring friends and family to celebrate special occasions. Chef Danny also commonly hosts events including wine tastings but most recently his table side paella demonstration where he made his Valencia and seafood paella right in front of us. At Slate a personal touch is put on every option you have for a dining experience, from your drink selection down to what ends up on the plate in front of you. Danny is there to make sure you are satisfied. I have been here multiple times for various meals and events and will continue to return.
We came to Slate off a recommendation of a friend, and didn't know what to expect from a wine bar with New American cuisine. From beginning to end, Chef Danny runs a great place. We were large group and everything came out perfectly, in terms of the food, they had wonderful crabcakes, awesome burger, which they call their Super Filet Mignon, and I tried a bite of their Award Winning Paella. Chef Danny's background is Valencian, but grew up in Maryland, which explains the Paella, and crabcakes. I wished I ordered the Paella, Best that I ever had, the flavor was so perfect. Chef Danny greets you with the warmest smile of genuine hospitality, which wants me to come back for more.
What an action packed night! There was a full house for the Portuguese Wine Dinner, which was almost a show in and of itself. The food was simply outstanding and the wine- paired absolutely perfectly! Such unique dishes presented so beautifully. I can't recommend Slate enough!
Food was fantastic! Traditional Benedict was good, crab cake Benedict was good, donut holes were so fresh and good. Yet somehow we were there only ones there for almost the entire meal! Made us feel like we missed something but if we didn't, I don't see why this place isn't always packed.
This was a beautiful find that I discovered last year while on a business trip and one that I noted to be a definite "come back to" restaurant. They didn't disappoint!
The scallops appetizers melted in your mouth and every bite of our meal was simply delicious. Everyone was very pleased with their selection. I would highly recommend that you take the time to find this gem. Great find, great food, great service and will make your taste buds smile.
Wonderful, as always. When I want a cozy space for excellent food, superlative wine pairings, and intimate conversation, Slate is my go-to! This time, most of us went for the paella, and the chef was kind enough to combine the seafood and vegetable paellas into a single scrumptious dish.
