Great wine selection, knowledgeable bartenders, especially Ellen and Ruben. Sexy little bites at happy hour.
The impressive wine list never disappoints. Knowledgeable staff and wonderful food. The best part of the experience is hanging out with the chef/owner/som, Danny!

First time dining at slate Wine Bar. Food was absolutely delicious. Service was good Tad overbearing but would not discourage me from going back.
Love Slate Wine Bar. Not only is the wine bar varied, but the food is excellent and pairs very well with the wines. The service is friendly, warm and knowledgeable. I had the tuna tartare and pita chips appetizer with the French onion soup. These paired nicely with my flight of three sparkling wines. Delicious!
My wife and I loved our dinner at Slate Wine Bar. Don't let the name fool you, this wine bar is run by a known chef, and has seriously good food. Then again, it is a wine bar, so the wine pairings with that good food takes the experience to a whole new level. My wife and I are foodies, and we eat out often. Slate was one of the first really great meals I have had in 2018.
We got the 3 course tasting menu along with the wine pairings. Since my wife and I got different meals, the paired wines were different for her and I, and this is what is great about Slate. All in all we each had 4 different wines, and still only drank about 3 servings of wine each. The wine pairing were excellent for the course being served to the individual, but maybe not suitable for a whole meal, but then that's why we only got 2.5 ounces to pair with the course.
The waitress was a bit new, with a few rough edges to her service. She was, however, attentive and eager to please, and will most certainly be a fine addition to the waitstaff in a few weeks. I took off a star, but that was just our luck, and doesn't say much about Slate overall.
We will come back, next time with friends!

This was our first time visiting Slate - surprised we had not stumbled in sooner. A neighborhood gem with solid offerings for both drink and food. We'll likely be making this a regular stop in the local rotation.
Can't say enough about this place. Great food and wine, with a great owner.

Slate is a local gem, with a great menu. It is primarily a wine bar, but my wife and I don't drink - we love it for the menu. Even if you don't drink it is worth the trip for the outstanding food. The onion soup is perfectly balanced and my favorite entree is the chicken and bacon tacos. The owner is very friendly and the staff is always helpful.
Had a very good time with the family (5 ppl). Enjoy every bite of each dish we had. Excellent paella also. Great service and nice atmosphere. The wine list is superb as well

Julieta and Yaz we’re behind the bar and they were great! They were both personable and knowledgeable. We opted for the 3 course meal option with the wine pairing. We had the steak and tuna as our entrees. They were great! We had great conversation and they were both so easy to get to know. The customer service and the food were fantastic. I’m sure we will be back soon. Thanks for a great night!

Don't let this smaller restaurant fool you - the food is amazing! Although the interiors are a bit underwhelming, the food was some of the best I've eaten in DC. Their paella is delicious and served to impress. Their scallops and duck dishes were very savory. The wine pairing complimented each serving. Overall I would recommend Slate for anyone looking for a great food experience.
*Street parking is your best option! I drove around for quite a while trying to find parking in a garage but most are have restrictions.
Came for restaurant week. Didn't allow any a la carte options just the strict restaurant week menu. Portions were extremely small. Most of the options had an upcharge. Food was low quality and wasn't memorable at all. Definitely won't be back.
We were there for brunch during restaurant week, and so glad that we came. The food was great and the wine parings on-point. We were seated upstairs, which was much quieter than the main level.
One negative - there was a surprise ingredient in one of our dishes, so if you have allergies, be sure to speak up in advance.

Went there for restaurant week, wait staff was pleasant and friendly. Atmosphere was amazing and food was incredible.
We had three-course restaurant-week meals. Lamb chop appetizer was good, as was crab cake entree. The paella my friend had was not good. Rice was undercooked grainy/chewy.
We were not a fan of Slate. Two stars for the drinks. Though we came during restaurant week, we ordered off of the dinner menu. I ordered the seafood paella and my partner ordered the crab cake. The seafood paella came out completely undercooked. The rice was unapologetically crunchy, and not in a good way. The Seafood laid atop it was over cooked. How? I'm not sure. I sent it back for a crab cake because my partner's looked good. I should have had him inspect it a bit more before making my choice. The crab cake was tasty but for $26, the plate was disappointing. The crab cake was about 6 oz and accompanied by about 4 haricot verts, chopped up by the way... and about two sprigs of cauliflower that appeared to be drunken in some type of sauce, with some halved cherry tomatoes. The side of vegetables was minuscule and the plate needed a starch, badly.
Our waitress was on a serious struggle bus. She dropped a least 3 items from our table and spilled some of my partner's $12 drink on the table. The manager was nice, but appeared overwhelmed with food running and waiter tasks. For the price tag and location, Slate just didn't meet my expectations.
We ate Slate thursday night and it was one of the worst dining experiences we have had in a long time. We had ordered the scallops and they tasted as if they had already turned. You might want to make sure you have fresh ones before they are served today to any other customers.
Additionally, the seafood paella was marginal. We had a table of 4 and I dont think one individual finished the whole course of any of the 3 courses we each had.
We had been wanting to try Slate for a while and Restaurant Week gave us a great opportunity to do so. Unfortunately after last night, I find it hard to believe we will ever be back.
Positively though, the wine was great.
I love Slate Wine Bar. Every time we come by its better than the last. While everything we've ever ordered has been great, last night we ordered the Paella, and oh my goodness!! I was instantly hooked. Love Chef Danny Lledo and his whole staff too, always a good time! Always coming back for more!
Staff was fine. Food was pretty underwhelming and overpriced. Space was pretty average. Food was clearly sitting out awhile before serving since the hollandaise on my eggs started to congeal. Won’t come back.
Great food and service. Try the shrimp appetizer and filet. Good selection of wines and Danny will take care of you!
Slate is a neighborhood gem. Tried the Chefs Valencia paella and had to return for more. My date had the seafood paella and I the vegetable. The paella was flavored to perfection and the rice was firm and flavorful. The vegetable were fresh and crisp and the seafood abundant. My starter was a green soup which was light and flavorful. My date enjoyed a fresh arugula salad with grated cheese and house dressing. The red wine t compliment the meal was superb.

We had such high hopes! But the place was empty when we got there (on a Saturday night), and the loud pop music was unexpected and took away from the wine bar atmosphere. The food was okay, and the wine list was short and pricey.
Not some terrible experience, but we will not go back. There are plenty of wonderful spots to get wine and good food in the city!
The duck spring roll was great, but otherwise the food was fair to good. The service was good, notwithstanding that there were 2 new servers training and the chef was helping out with table service. In fact, I think the service would have been better if the chef had stayed in the kitchen - he was quite annoying, was not at all welcoming, and seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. Not worth going back.
Unfortunately, I did not care for this place. We were the only table in the loft area and service was SLOW! My water glass had lipstick on it, and my $30 filet mignon came out cold. It took so long to my food I ate it anyway out if fear that it would take twice as long to get a new steak. I can't honestly recommend this place due to my experience, but maybe it was just a bad night?!?!?
Quality, service, and most important, consistency. Good food and wine at a great place!
I have been to Slate for many special occasions from birthday parties to Easter Sunday brunch so there was no question this would be the perfect place to take family and meet friends the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. With a larger group of people (6-7) the owner/head chef Danny was able to make excellent recommendations on the wine knowing we were ultimately there for his famous paella but still wanted to relax and hang out with our loved ones. When it came time to order dinner we ordered one of each of his paellas (vegetarian, seafood, and Valencian) so everyone at the table could try all and debate which was best (we couldn’t decide on one.) When the food came out those at other tables with larger parties quickly followed suit in doing the same thing. After dinner Danny was able to recommend some excellent shareable deserts for the table and a lovely desert wine. Overall the experience was perfect for the evening. My family was able to catch up with family friends while enjoying paella, wine, and service at a quality that you can’t get elsewhere in DC. Well definitely be back!

Love the sommelier tastings at Slate! They never fail to disappoint, this time it was a superb Ribera and Rueda selection. We booked at 9:30 and the place was still packed, very lively atmosphere.
Chef Danny does a great job at cooking amazing food and selecting outstanding wines, all reasonably priced. And he is great at walking the room and making everybody feel welcomed and special. One of our favorite restaurants in DC.
I went for evening drinks and light snacks with friends, and had the most memorable time. Our evening began with a tasting menu of their best wines recommended by their Chef & Sommelier. The flights of red wine from Portugal, Argentina, France, to California were paired well with the cheese and charcuterie platter. I have a sweet tooth, so the addition of the marinated cherries and pineapples that were added to our cheese platter was divine. Our night did not consist of much more food, but the experience in all is what made the night so great. The wine selections were varied and at great prices, a win win! The ambiance in the dinning area was intimate enough to not hear my neighbors at the table next to me, but also so lively and somewhat informal. The staff were attentive, knowledgeable and extremely friendly. The owner and chef made his rounds and ensured that we enjoyed our time.
The experience that the restaurant provided made it that much better to sit with a few girlfriends, enjoy exquisite wine, delicious snacks and an evening full of laughs!
I joined a few friends for a Sommelier Wine Tasting event and it was great! Danny and all of his staff were very knowledgeable about the wines being offered and even helped us pair our food choices to go with the offerings. As always a fun night at Slate!
