Slate is a contemporary American bar and restaurant. The restaurant has two main dining areas. The first is a main dining room that is primarily decorated in dark woods with matte finishes. Everything from the bars to the tables to the walls have wooden accents that give the restaurant a rustic yet classy atmosphere. The second dining area is Slate's outdoor patio, complete with several covered tables where diners can enjoy their food under the sun when the weather is right.
Slate's menu is split into two sections: Smaller and Bigger. The "Smaller" section is primarily appetizers and tapas, meant to be enjoyed with a cocktail or two. The "Bigger" section is made up of the main courses and entrée options. Some of Slate's signature dinner dishes are the pork coppa, fennel crusted black cod, lemon pepper linguine, polenta cakes with caponata and grilled flank steak with heirloom squash and chermoula.
I loved Slate when it was Equinox, I really hope that it is not closing because my friends and I have always enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and the service.
The service was fantastic and the food delicious - well presented.
Excellent service. Knowledgeable staff.
The best part of the restaurant is the gorgeous patio hidden off the main drag of Mississippi Ave. We ordered six items and 2 were amazing the other four were ok and pretty much all used the same ingredients for different dishes. The waiter was very nice but a bit clueless on the specials and menu items. I wish Equinox was still there!!
The food was very good as were the cocktails. The problems were: 1. They were out of about 5 items on the menu. This was a Tuesday night at 7:00pm. That shouldn't have happened. 2. The server was overwhelmed. They were short staffed and she let us know it.
The good thing is that the food was really very good.
The menu shown on the OpenTable site was not available. Menu shown was only for weekdays. So we showed up to a breakfast/brunch menu when we were looking for a full lunch menu. Really wasted our time... suggest having a note that says (lunch menu not available on the weekends)
Brunch turnover was delish!
My boyfriend and I were visiting Portland for a friend's wedding. We didn't know much about the city, so when looking for restaurants we did simple searches through OpenTable. Slate was undoubtedly our best find! We were seated in the outdoor patio/garden, which is a beautiful space. Our server was kind, funny and attentive. The drinks were absolutely delicious. Most importantly, however, the food was simply divine. Each dish was so tasty, well executed, and visually appealing, that I wished I could try everything on the menu. I would absolutely recommend Slate to everyone in Portland, and can't wait to eat there again!
Everything was excellent! We especially enjoyed the steak and the vegetarian entree. Can't wait to go back and dine on their patio.
Slate was a wonderful spot to celebrate Mother's Day. The menu, food and service was amazing. I especially enjoyed the spicy Bloody Mary. We will be back.
Loved this place for dinner. Service was amazing. Went for brunch on Mother's Day and had amazing food again but the service was a bit slow. It was a busy holiday though so it's understandable. Wonderful restaurant.
This was a very disappointing experience. We had been here before when the name was Equinox.
The portions are labeled as "family style" and large, but are not. The Moscow mule I ordered came half full. I asked about it, and they informed us that is how they are served. It is the wrong message to send a $12 drink (or whatever it was) half full. Just not impressed at all, and it was dead in there on a Friday night.
We had visited Slate in it's earlier version, Equinox, and had always meant to visit again. When presented with the opportunity to come to Slate's grand opening, we jumped at the chance. The food was great; we'll be back.
Excellent patio/outdoor seating. Food was presented well but oversauced.
The restaurant maybe not quite ready for prime time. For the first time ever in Portland, I've eaten somewhere where the portions are legitimately too small. I'm a small lady, and I think oversized restaurant portions are contributing to a health crisis in the US, but this place goes too far the other direction. I was hungry after brunch. The food isn't cheap either. It was tasty, but too little. Two in my party ordered a virgin bloody mary. Mine was just a glass of tomato juice and the other was made perfectly, as was the vodka version. I sent mine back within minutes, and after inquiring twice with our server and another, my drink finally arrived remade a few minutes the food was served. Unacceptable. The server actually charged us for the drink, which I reflected in a lower tip. I understand that the restaurant was busy, but I don't understand failing to correct a mistake, especially after it dragged on and on. To that end, expect to WAIT to order, WAIT for your food, WAIT to see your server again. Portland isn't Paris, and brunch is barely a concept there anyway. The patio is lovely, but go expecting child-size portions or mediocre service.
Food was tasty but somewhat small, even the large plates. We were told as our food arrived separately that the plates are to share. Wish we had known that from the beginning. Mains don't really have sides so be sure to order some if you want more than one thing. Outdoor space is nice.
My fiends and I had been to this restaurant numerous times when it was Equinox. The new decor was refreshing and calming. The wait staff was very familiar, but the new menu offerings were delicious. One of my friends that does not do dairy, eggs, or meat was extremely pleased with her food. And, believe me when I say that is something to shout about. Thanks...
It lived up to the reviews. Food was tasty, service could use improvement. The slow service didn't ruin the meal, but don't come here when you have plans following.
I came here with my mom, fiancé, and future mother & sister-in-law for a Mother's Day Brunch. The outdoor patio was so nice, especially with the nice weather! The food was decent, the service was good, and I absolutely loved their Bacon Bloody Mary!
