I’ve eaten at Slanted Door several times in SF and food has been consistently good. I was excited to try the San Ramon restaurant and made reservations for my family to celebrate Father’s Day. We were seated within 15 minutes of our reservation, despite the number of open tables. They appeared short-staffed. We waited at least 20 minutes before the waitperson took our order. After placing our order, we waited another 20 minutes before our appetizers arrived. The spring rolls, grapefruit and jicama salad and dumplings were tasty and fresh. Another 15-20 minutes later our main dishes arrived. We ordered the crab cellophane noodles and whole fish. The fish was highly recommended by the receptionist and waitperson. Unfortunately, both dishes were disappointing. The noodles had sparse crumbs of crab (not chunks) with sesame oil as the dominant flavor. Nothing special. The fish was nicely presented but overcooked and dry.
I informed the waitperson the fish was overcooked and dry. She said she’d notify the kitchen. When she delivered our bill, we were charged the full amount. I fully expected to pay for the meal but would’ve appreciated an apology or request for any additional feedback. Needless to say, I won’t be returning soon.
Fathers Day dinner. Unfortunately they must have been short staffed because it took 10 mins to get us seated; tables had to be cleaned up. We ordered one appetizer which came out quickly but then waited 45 mins to get our main meal. While the waitress was friendly, she never checked in and let us know things were backed up. Overall the food was really good.
We love this restaurant. We really miss the SF location, but it was thoroughly enjoyable.
We ordered the crispy egg rolls (that was awesome), shrimp spring rolls, the rice pork on banana leaf, and the lemon grass chicken, beef pho, seafood vermicelli. My family enjoyed all of them. Service was great although the food waiting time can be improved but overall a great experience for a Father’s Day celebration.
It was Father’s Day. Crowded but I think people were just excited to get back to a normal life after the numbers for covid were going down. Also, things just opened back up with mask and cdc restrictions lightened.
The food was amazing. Just as excellent as the SF location. There were great options for everyone, from the vegeterians to the pescaterians and carnivores. Service was wonderful. Our waiter as fun and his recommendations were excellent. Overall, outstanding evening.
First time…it was such a great place…we will take our kids there…ambience didn’t match the value ( valued the food very highly ). Didn’t like the fact that it was too casual.
Tables for two are in the walkways unless along the outside wall. atmosphere was good a little noisy due to all the hard surfaces
We had a late lunch (1:30) on a very hot day. No one sat outside.
Nice looking place- very modern. Lots of hard surfaces. Noise level tolerable at lunch. Could be extreme in the evening, particularly if the bar is busy.
Food was very good, if pricey. I had Caramalized Prawns, $34. Very tender, all cleaned, enough to take some . home for dinner . Dining partner had Beef with vermicelli noodles. Very high quality beef, generous serving again.
Rice was $3 extra for $34 shrimp. And it was not very good rice. Dining partner, who eats rice much more often than myself, thought it might be Minute Rice.
Oddest experience of all was the service. We had 5 different people wait on us, and not very promptly at that. After waiting an unseemingly long time for horderves ( and the kitchen had 4 cooks idly standing by), the “manager” found our plate and delivered it to us. I don’t expect fawning attention from wait staff, but here it was almost somnambulistic.
I believe I know why- the check for two had an automatic 20% gratuity. I would have done 15% or maybe 14% under normal circumstances.
We won’t be going back unless someone with deeper pockets treats us. Am glad to say I have finally tried the Slanted Door experience.
Their tables were set apart, which was comforting. Most of the food was excellent as expected. But the shrimp smelt of chlorine, probably due to long storage. But they promptly took it back for us. Good service but I hope automatic billing of 20% gratuity is temporary.
Modern restaurant, limited menu, unauthentic foods, small portion and too pricey. We decided to try Slanted Door because of many high reviews but very disappointed. Pho (beef noodle) was too plain (both flavor & smell), crab vermicelli was not fresh (canned crab), caramelized shrimp was stir fried with sweet soy sauce (nothing special), and jicama salad was just mostly red cabbage with some apple & grapefruit slides. 20% service charge automatically added to bill.
If you like to try great Vietnamese or Asian foods, it’s NOT at Slanted Door because it is so unauthentic and not even fusion.
Food was subpar. Ribs dry, noodles flavorless. Several items on the menu were not available. Overall high cost, average quality.
Delicious and fresh. So happy to see them packed!!
No matter where Slanted Door is located - SF, San Ramon, or Berkeley- the food is sensational from the bbq ribs to the shaking beef to the black cod and more. The cocktails are special, too. Be prepared to open your wallet, though.
Wow! First time here. So great. Our server answered questions and made recommendations about food and wine. It was lovely. Great food. Staff is so knowledgeable about what foods are good together and how to with the spring rolls. The Pork Chops are amazing! And the desserts are incredible - save room!
We will be back
The food was exquisite! Everything we ordered from salads, appetizers and main courses were fantastic. I had high expectations for Slanted Door and my expectations were exceeded!
Yellowtail appetizer was ridiculously small portion for $21. The grapefruit salad was flavorless. Service was attentive and thoughtful. Being able to sit outside was awesome.
Great food! Priced a bit high and they require the 20% tip
Great food, great service even though very crowded. What made the meal great, though, was eating outside and still being warm. Great outdoor heaters.
My family and I love it here- - the people, the service and the food are all EXCEPTIONAL. The vibe is perfect for a date night, outing with friends or just with your family. I have 3 young kids and they love coming here; their favorite menu items are the crispy imperial rolls, the claypot chicken and the butterscotch pudding. My favorites are the gau choy gau (wild gulf shrimp and garlic dumplings), shaking beef, crab noodles and the wild black cod - - and, I don’t know what it is, but they have the best jasmine rice! Overall, an extremely well run restaurant. We will keep coming back.
Nothing done in relation to my Open Table note that we were celebrating my husband’s birthday. Waitress brought us our check before asked, and when we asked to see a dessert menu, she informed us that “well, it’s almost 7:30pm.” Our dinner reservation was for 6:30pm and we seated a little early at 6:20pm, so does that mean that there is a 60 minute dining limit?!?! It certainly was not mentioned on Open Table if there is. Waitress also pushed their boujee ‘pineapple spritzer’ on my sons only for us to discover that it was $9 for pineapple juice, seltzer water and mint leaves, but that was par for the course considering all of their menu items are overpriced, including a large order of rice that won’t feed an Asian family of four. Oh and let’s not forget that they now force a 20% service charge on you. Disappointing since our past experiences have been quite nice, but restaurant seems to be slipping or perhaps getting a bit big for their britches. May be a while before we venture back here again, which is a shame given how close we live…sigh.
Excellent food and service!!!
Delicious food, group anniversary celebration, great time!
Slanted Door was great -- nice outdoor table, great service. Nice cocktails (even tweaking one for no alcohol). We had the shrimp -- perfectly cooked with green onions, and the Clay Pot Chicken -- with a side of brown rice. Everything was delicious and took home lots of the chicken for leftovers. It might seem pricey, but you are getting fantastic quality and there was enough to take some home. Looking forward to returning and trying a few other items and some appetizers.
While the food was delicious, but the service was barely there. Not sure if understaffed or simply inattentive. Given the cost, the food does not outweigh the bad service.
Lovely meal from first bite to last!
I am so pleased that we have Slanted Door in our beautiful city, San Ramon! ❤️
We had a great experience!
The Imperial Rolls were amazing!!!
Slanted Door is always a favorite. The small plates are fantastic. The jasmine rice is not dry over overcooked. Had the halibut tonight but it was a but too much onion flavor for me. I love the chicken clay pot and shaking beef is a favorite. Finished off the night with the perfect Hong Kong Milk Tea. Will always come back any time.
Our server, Felix, was outstanding.
Wonderful food and exceptional service even though the heaters were Jill not working reliably on a cool evening. The halibut, cellophane noodles, yellowtail, and spring rolls were delicious, perfectly cooked, tastefully flavored, and nicely presented.
We were in by noon and didn’t get our food until 1:00. Had to rush to eat to get to the afternoon meetings.
A dream lunch
Met up with a friend for lunch. Made reservations in advanced. It was beautiful outside so requested outdoor seating. I’ve always had good experiences eating here. The service is on par the food is exceptional, overall, a pleasant dining experience. Love this spot!
Food is amazing! Great portion sizes and easy to share.
The food was great with surprisingly large portions. Will come here again real soon.
I've been meaning to try Slanted Door for a long time and I finally went. Everyone recommended the Shaking Beef...it was good but pricey. I've had better Shaking Beef for much lower price. I do recommend the imperial rolls. Those were really good. Also had the shrimp but it was just OK. Would not order that again. I will go back to try their other menu items.
Took awhile for the server to bring us menus and come to our table but after that it was good service and food.
