About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for groups
While Slanted Door is opening this new location in Napa, it all began with an idea to open a Vietnamese crêpe stand or a noodle shop in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Charles Phan searched for a location but was told that there were already too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area. He moved the search to his own neighborhood: the Mission. He quickly found an available space on Valencia Street.

The Slanted Door was born in 1995 with the goal of elevating Vietnamese food to the next level—modern design, sustainable local ingredients, quality teas, and wine pairings. The Slanted Door was quickly recognized and became too small to accommodate the reservation requests. The growing restaurant moved to South of Market in 2002. It was there that the team integrated a craft cocktail program, which was one of the first restaurants in San Francisco to offer craft cocktail menus. The Slanted Door moved again to the San Francisco Ferry Building in 2004.

Our first time here and we were warmly greeted. Love the vibe and openness of the dining room and bar. We made a first time error in ordering too much food and the owner quickly recognized the mistake and came to explain that we should plan on sharing food. The 4 of us ordered enough for 8 people! Delicious food all around and good service. It's pretty loud and it was hard at times to talk over the loud music. We adjusted but felt like we were yelling. We will definitely be back. Thank you!

The dishes at Slanted Door are original, artfully prepared and amazingly tasty. The ingredients are what most of us have at home (I wish I knew what all of the ingredients are in the daikon cakes), and prepared in a different fashion with sauces that accentuate the meal. The drink, a Moonset Margarita, had citrus marmalade at the bottom and was a great cocktail. I treated myself to a Pavlova for dessert, and it was light and airy. And I ate it all! Why aren’t all dishes and drinks as creative as what’s prepared at Slanted Door? It’s pricey, but worth the money. The chefs here creates memories, and I think that’s pretty special.

Nothing special. Not bad, not awesome. Service was bare bones. Food was good but basic. Plating was simple. Was expecting more.

Three of the four appetizers we ordered were excellent, but the yellowtail was underwhelming. The fish was ok, but the dish lacked depth and flavor (we later realized we ordered fish on a Monday and wondered if that might have contributed to the issue). The daikon radish rice cake was phenomenal, as was the banana leaf dumpling. The shaking beef was delicious and a must get, but every single item needed the addition of the hot sauce trio. The dungeness crab glass noodles left so much to be desired - there was hardly any flavor to it, and we wished it had another element of interest (a bit of citrus, something crunchy, etc.) The service was wonderful and the courtyard is lovely to sit in. I would come back for appetizers if we found ourselves looking for an interesting dining option in Napa, but I don't think I would make a trip back just for Slanted Door. It was too mellowed out to be interesting, and maybe that's a by-product of the location? Also, we were shocked by the lack of dessert options for a Vietnamese inspired restaurant - pavlova with lime curd, an egg coffee, and an olive cake. Nothing felt like the right end to the meal and we skipped it. Was so excited to see a Slanted Door open again, but maybe it was more interesting when it was in SF?

Our server helped us choose our menu. Catherine had a great smile and was fun. The food was wonderful starting with the appetizer, a Spring Role. The highlight was the Shaking beef which was cooked perfectly and delicious tasting. All the dishes were presented beautifully and there was more than enough in each serving for us to share. We capped the meal off with Olive Oil Cake and While Chrysanthemum Tea. Delightful evening and we hope to return soon.

Tried to cancel reservation about one hour before the RSVP but despite calling their number six times could not get through, phone call clicked off after 2 rings. My wife was having gi distress and I knew it would not go well. However due to $80 charge for cancellation, we trudged in anyway. I had wanted to do an order to go for our deposit. Room was very noisy and service slow. Food was overpriced for what we received, spring rolls, jelly noodles and cod one pot for $212. Best part were small single barrel Manhattans. Will not likely return.

Fabulous dinners. Lamb and crab with glass noodles outstanding. Papaya salad was yummy. Been there twice and it’s always empty! Maybe because it was mid-week.

Food was great. Service was prompt with good attention to detail. Only gripe I have is that I got a 3oz serving of water, when It was finished I had to get up and get my own water refill. Not use to paying $500 for brunch to get up and get my own water. Our waitress disappeared half way through the meal and other people brought the food.

Service was a bit slow but it’s Mother’s Day. Brunch menu is limited. We prefer the full menu. Crispy imperial rolls were delicious. I wanted lemon grass chicken but it had been changed from chicken breast to thigh which is not my favorite. Food was good but not as great as in the past.
