Vietnamese
While Slanted Door is opening this new location in Napa, it all began with an idea to open a Vietnamese crêpe stand or a noodle shop in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Charles Phan searched for a location but was told that there were already too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area. He moved the search to his own neighborhood: the Mission. He quickly found an available space on Valencia Street.

The Slanted Door was born in 1995 with the goal of elevating Vietnamese food to the next level—modern design, sustainable local ingredients, quality teas, and wine pairings. The Slanted Door was quickly recognized and became too small to accommodate the reservation requests. The growing restaurant moved to South of Market in 2002. It was there that the team integrated a craft cocktail program, which was one of the first restaurants in San Francisco to offer craft cocktail menus. The Slanted Door moved again to the San Francisco Ferry Building in 2004.

So glad to have the same quality of cuisine in Napa that was in San Francisco with Slanted Door. Great happy hour drinks and food selection. We will be regulars.

The new Slanted Door digs are sleek and quite attractive. The food, cocktails and wine list remain outstanding. It is definitely an expensive night out, but the food is sublime. Cocktails are delicious, but most are 18 bucks each and on the small side. The wine list is very special with a very large selection of fine, well-priced, dry Rieslings, which is one of the best varietals to pair with this cuisine. The green papaya salad was wonderful, quite different than the Thai version, but fantastic topped with homemade onion crisps. The imperial fried spring rolls were the best we ever had. The Gau Choy Go (wild gulf shrimp and garlic chive dumplings) were a taste revelation. We sprung for the Pekin Duck with fried rice. It was $56 for a half duck and very good, but the fried rice was the best we ever had. Next time we shall get the BBQ Pork Spareribs, $26 for a generous portion. Service was excellent. The kitchen is very fast, so I would suggest ordering cocktails before ordering any appetizers and then order a course at a time or everything will arrive at once. This is certainly the gold standard for the entire Bay Area for fine, modern Vietnamese cuisine. It really was one of the best dining experiences we have had in a long time. BTW, the bar is very modern and inviting.

The food is pretty good, but not the pioneering cuisine that the parent San Francisco branch offered. It is very salty, though, so be aware. Fair wine list, but lots of good Rieslings, which are great with Viet Namese dishes. Glad to see Maury as the Somm. He gets it. The restaurant is quite expensive, but its hot right now. Worth the visit to see what you think.

Was so disappointed upon learning that the Slanted door had closed in SF - but was so excited to see that they opened a location in Napa. Our hostess said they were planning on re-opening in SF at the end of the year which is great news. The food was impeccable and so good!

We love the one in San Francisco. Been there many times. We were excited to see them opening one in Napa. What a disappointment! The food was mediocre at best, service amateurish, and the ambiance cold. The tables are way too close to one another. The high price is not warranted by any means. We are looking forward to the reopening of the San Francisco property. Hopefully, it will not have changed in regards to the food quality and the service. Will not be back to the Napa one. There are too many much better places to choose from. Really sad.

This was our first time at the new Napa location. Our reservation was for 5:45 pm on Valentine's Day. After being welcomed at the entry, we were escorted, without a wait, into the dining room and given a choice of tables open. Our server came over immediately to welcome us and brought us water right away along with the wine/cocktail list and the menu. We chose to skip a cocktail and he opened the bottle of wine we brought. Once we had a few sips of wine and had perused the menu, he asked if we had any questions and we were ready to order. we chose 2 starters - Crispy Imperial Rolls and Gau Choy Gau. Both were delicious - fresh ingredients with beautiful flavors. For our entrees we ordered jasmine rice, Shaking Beef and Cellophane Noodles - all delicious. While my husband preferred the beef, I preferred the cellophane noodles that had a generous amount of crab meat. For dessert, we shared a chocolate hazelnut tart. Though I am not much of a dessert person, I loved it as the chocolate was not sweet. All in all, it was a wonderful meal. Our server was so attentive with his tables that he never skipped a beat on pouring our wine, keeping our water glasses filled and ensuring that the timing of the courses were neither rushed nor slow, but rather deliberate. The bill was indicative of quality ingredients, talented chefs, and superb wait staff. We are local in Napa and will definitely be back!

Love Slanted Door and so happy that it’s opened in Napa. Easier to get to than the ferry building however, the ferry building holds charm that this location . Delicious food great service we ate lunch there. I guess it was on the second day that they were offering lunch and they were only two other tables the word hadn’t gotten out yet that was an option.

Overall it is a really great outpost of a really great restaurant. I have been going to the Slanted Door in SF since they were 30 seats on 16th & Valencia. Th e food and service have become more elevated but the essence of what they do is the same. Great food, wine and service.

Food was fine, but venue too noisy over 90dbs! Had difficulty hearing dinner companion across small table! Also, a bit too pricey. Not a place for a quiet dinner. They should look for some way to dampen the noise - It really detracted from the experience.

Nice atmosphere and service, but food was not up to expectations this visit especially for the price point. Lamb chops were delicious but cooked medium as opposed to requested medium rare and a touch over seasoned. Brussels sprouts were very good but many would consider them over seasoned. Black cod did not taste fresh. Yellowtail and scallop appetizer were outstanding. Daikon cake was excellent, but again maybe a little over seasoned. Still overall a nice experience. Also, as do many others, I’m bothered by the mandatory 20%tip though I at least recognize and applaud them for making that well known both in the OT reservation page as well as on the bill.

Slanted Door/Napa has an uphill climb in a town with so many fine restaurants. My group of three was not prepared for family style. One of us had the Pork Chop, which was delicious, but fatty. One had an appetizer of Crispy Rolls, which she enjoyed, and I ordered the Cellophane Noodles with crab. I found my dish to be tasty, but quite small considering the price and the amount of crab included was minimal. I ordered a side of Bok Choy as an afterthought and that was the best thing I tasted. The server was charming and attentive--no complaints there. At the end of the meal, all I could think is that I would rather have been at Morimoto Asia! I may return to check out the bar, which seemed to have a good vibe.

So happy to see this excellent restaurant has a new opening in Napa. One of the top restaurants in San Francisco has found a suburban spot to showcase their excellence. Favorites on the menu are the shaking beef and clay pot chicken. Great service in a clean, vibrant and aesthetically pleasant new location.

The sound level within the restaurant was getting close to unbearable and we could not hear our waitress as she considerably raised her voice to wait on us and others in the main dining room. We had 3 apps., 1 main and a side so this should have been a good representation of the capabilities of the chef/kitchen. The scallop app. was ok but nothing to write home. The fresh rolls were the best part of the meal. The garlic chive dumplings were good but the sauce it was served with tasted like plain salty soy sauce poured over a dollop of siracha. Next up was the Cod and bok choy. The Cod was once again Ok for the cook (a bit dry) and the toppings were too salty where the bok choy was the 2nd best part of our meal. Bottom line is I have leftovers in my fridge that I will probably not eat.
