Great food and atmosphere!!
I held out on a visit to Skippa until an important milestone came around and my husband's birthday was just the right one. He's tough to impress, holds everything (especially food) to a high standard, and does not like a fuss for this birthday. Also, side note, we will be travelling to Japan in a few months, where he says he's looking more forward to the food than anything else (big statement from an architect). So it was with that in mind that I booked Skippa- an unassuming, small culinary tour de force, in an equally unassuming stretch of Harbord Street. Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated along a table by the window which was fashioned from a cross cut of a huge tree trunk- a marvel indeed and an instant inspiration for a conversation. The menu featured a Chef's table option called Trust Skippa- which at $120 per person was a hard to pass up given that it included $47 worth of sushi along with pre and post courses that sounded scrumptious. Each course was presented with the details of the dish, the source from the super friendly, proud and knowledgable staff, and was followed by another meticulously lated item that beat the last one in execution and flavour. We were so ecstatic that we ordered a bottle of wine more than halfway through our meal. And the dessert was just the thoughtful, beautifully executed end to a beautiful journey. The atmosphere was casual and unpretentious with everyone clearly respecting food and the art of making it. It will be hard to beat this experience in Toronto. I'm looking forward to treating myself for my birthday in a couple of months...as unoriginal as the idea may be at this point!
Great service. Exciting food, with the quality and love shining through. Really nice!
This is one of the most special places in Toronto or elsewhere. The food is impeccably prepared, with precise attention to the smallest details. The staff is warm, genuine and extremely attentive. It’s a place that leaves one feeling nourished, both in gustatory and emotional terms. Each gesture, presentation of food and drink, and interpersonal interaction is so thoughtful, loving and nuanced.
I can not recommend this place more highly! If you interested in people who pour their heart, soul and creative spirit into their craft, this is the place to be.
I will come here again and again. It leaves one feeling more expansive and realizing what a true love of one’s work can do to make everyone feel welcome and deeply valued. That’s more than just about food— but the food is also divine and surpasses many Michelin star restaurants I have been to across the globe. This place deserves such a standing in the coming years!
Between learning about here all the fish and products used comes from and the added history of other items it made for an awesome experience. I recommend the Omakase as it says on the menu Trust Skippa
Awesome tasting menu with lots of variety.
An incomprable sushi experience. Anyone who appreciates sushi and the true dining experience that surrounds it; there is no comparison.
I've never been to a restaurant where the service staff has been so attentive. To the point where they kept changing from chop sticks to cutlery depending on the food being served. Our waiter was the best and it was only upon paying did we find out we were his first table ever. Cudos to him. Best of all was the taste and freshness of the food was beyond compare. A restaurant I would certainly recommend to others.
Amazing food and impeccable service but know that if you do (my recommendation) the chef’s preset menu be prepared to spend 2.5 hours at least on dinner. It was okay to alter my night’s schedule but I didn’t know to expect that much time to be spent there.
We all think the soy sauce is too sweet, overpowering the taste of fish. Also ginger is too strong to eat between sushi, it takes long time for the taste of the ginger to go away before trying another sushi. These two items ruined the beautiful sushi.
3 things tasted way too strong than it should be: soy sauce, ginger and edible flowers. A little bit of adjustment on these items and it could be a lot better perhaps.
Servers were friendly and accommodating.
A really wonderful place for dinner. I’ve enjoyed every visit, so much.
My girlfriend and I got engaged and I decided to book a dinner at Skippa to celebrate. The staff went above and beyond to make our night feel absolutely special. The food was fantastic, as good as we remember eating in the best places in Japan, and the sake was delicious. Thank-you so much Skippa, we'll never forget your generous hospitality!! Truly one of the best dining experiences we've ever had.
Second time going for our anniversary. Service is great. Chef and staff acknowledged our celebration with sparklers and a Polaroid with dessert. Love how the veggies are focused on local Ontario grown produce and sushi sourced from Japan. I am so happy that their grilled maitake mushrooms are still on the menu. So good! This time around the highlights for me were the oysters from New Zealand topped with Ontario strawberries and the melt-in-your-mouth rosy seabass (aka mutsu) from Fukuoka. Thank you Chef Ian and team!
Just the most yummy food!! So fresh and flavourful
Although generally what we ate was good, there was very little for the cost. Extremely limited menu
Staff was amazing, friendly, attentive....everything we wanted, including incredible omakase menu option.
Great little place. Just make a reservation. The food is great and the fish is fantastic. Flown in from Japan and you can certainly tell its top tier product! Not an inexpensive place by any means but the price you pay is worth it.
Had only the sushi preset for $50. Not a traditional sushi expert but I was disappointed. From the east coast so know my seafood. Not sure if all of the sushi was fresh. My dining mate loved her à la carte choices
Absolutely love the food. So flavourful. And fabulous service
Flawlessly incredible in both food and service. Skippa sets the bar for contemporary Japanese cuisine. Trust Skippa - always!
Best restaurant in Toronto
Chef Ian is AMAZING what an experience!
AMAZING FOOD! THE SERVICE WAS IMPECCABLE :)
I REALLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!
Always magnificent! We are never disappointed when we dine at Skippa, and actually the seems to be getting even better each time.
Get the "trust Skippa" omakase! It's absolutely outstanding.
the "trust skipper" tasting menu is excellent. Don't expect straight traditional Japanese food. The dishes leading up to the sushi course are Japanese inspired fusion. Even each piece of bite sized sushi has a little twist to the flavour. Quality of the ingredients is beyond reproach. The setting is casual, and the service is excellent. Pricey has others have mentioned, but we have had equally expensive meals in town that were not nearly as good as this.
The food is absolutely sublime, with the attention to detail devoted towards the ingredients and plating being especially memorable. But the quality of service - while passable - has yet to reach the standard expected of a $120 tasting menu.
Awesome food - tasting menu was epic! Great service too.
On recommendations from a couple of friends, came to visit and ordered Trust Skippa. Was underwhelmed by the food-- tastes weren't particularly unique/aromatic/pleasing, ingredients not particularly fresh. They like to emphasize where the ingredients come from (some domestic, mostly international,) but the value is lost since distance of travel does not equal quality.
My sister who had been to Skippa previously mentioned that a prior menu was better, so maybe I just got unlucky with this menu.
Service, however was attentive enough. Someone in my party made one request (allergy, avoid adding specific ingredient to any of her dishes,) which was forgotten on the first course... But one of the chefs brought a new serving, apologized, and the remainder of the courses were served observing her request. Tea was always topped, each course explained upon service.
We had the Omakase. Overall the experience was fantastic from start to finish. Thank you very much!
The sushi only looks like authentic edomae style sushi, but taste is no match to other authentic sushi restaurants. For the price being set at such level, the sushi should be a lot better. Only has the look but not the taste, it is easy to have the look, but hard to be the same inside too.
This was our second visit and it continues to be one of the absolute best meals in Toronto.
Ian and Kati take care of each customer to the fullest, we did the the "Trust Skippa" and were not disappointed. The amount of dishes was generous and was a full experience as they described the plates. While I wish we were able to sit at the high top I'm sure I'll be back and request seating there.
The fish was top quality but the chef lacked knife skills. The fish wasn’t cut properly and the nigiri rice didn’t hold together. It crumbles as soon as you pick up the nigiri. The sushi rice WAS NOT prepared by an expertly. With Sushi, quality ingredients need to be matched with quality knife skills or it’s pointless. It’s like eating A5 Kobe beef well done in the microwave. The service was good but not great. The sake was great but pricey and the room is very lacklustre. The chef should focus more on the cut, cure and rice instead of guiding us through the sushi eating process like we’re school kids who’ve never eaten good sushi...
Not worth the price at all. I picked the trust skippa option which was 130 per person, included about 10-12 bite size meals which includes 6 sushi and 1 handroll.
I expected the sushi fish to be of better quality for the price. I also expected a higher quantity of Sushi given the price - 6 is just not worth it whereas other Sushi Omakase serve around 15 different kinds of sushi for the same price and tastes better and quality is better as well. The rest of the courses served were okay but not worth the price - specially considering the vegetarian courses. The food is also not enough so dont be surprised to leave the restaurant with not a full stomach even after paying 450 for two people!
We were seated at the far left of bar which is really close to the stove and temperature was uncomfortably high and we became all sweaty.
There is only one sushi chef, so you really have to wait for the food because one person is basically serving the whole restaurant.
Server's service was exceptional and she helped us find an awesome Sake to go with our meal.
Overall, will not return as I can get better and a higher quantity and variety of sushi for the same price at Kaji or Saku.
It’s exceptionally expensive and there’s a good chance you’ll still be hungry after. The sushi IS delicious but it’s worth snacking beforehand
We have been in the restaurant business for over 40 years. We dine out everywhere we go. Skippa tasting menu ranks in the top 5 meals we have ever eaten. Ever. Go there and sit at the sushi bar and brace yourself for an ethereal experience.
Amazing service and food! Will definitely be back!
