Sixth Gear - Cask & Kitchen
Sixth Gear opened in January 2016 and is located on the East Side of South Boston on the corner of L Street and Fourth. Since then, Sixth Gear has been serving both classic comfort food dishes and new ventures into modern American style cooking.
Sixth Gear's interior, reflects a Neo-Victorian style theme (think London mid 1800's - early 1900's) with a modern steampunk style twist. The restaurant offers the choice to observe passers-by in an open window setting or seats at the bar in front of your favorite sports team.

Waited 2 hours for food 🥘
the food was ok, not great. my friend's breakfast burger came out raw. fun atmosphere with hip hop brunch. overall disappointment.
Came here with my girls' part of our girls' weekend. They have a 90s hip hop brunch every 1st Sunday of the month and found that to be a bit disappointing as it was just 90s tunes playing with no other themes adding to it (like hiphop themed drinks/food, outfits etc.). If they do ramp that up it would definitely be another star!. Other than that the service was great, albeit our food did take some time to come out, BUT when it did WOW WOW WOW so good! My Good Morning Pizza was so big that I had to take some with me even AFTER I shared with BOTH of my girls (they kindly provided a plastic bag for me to make a portable cooler- to keep it refrigerated until I got to a fridge- with the ice from the ice bucket that held our champagne for our mimosas, which were great too!) . The food I sampled off their plates, the S'mores French Toast and the Chicken and Waffle Sandwich were also heavenly! And the bill was not bad at all for ordering our food plus splitting a table mimosa (which came out to be about 2 mimosas per person for 3 people) - a little less than $30 per person. Overall if you could just be a little patient for the food , it's a great place to come and eat and drink while bopping to some 90s hiphop jams :)
Terrible food. Everything was frozen, or very bland in taste. Management was downright rude. I would not recommend this place at all.
Service was great ! Super attentive & friendly with everyone
Very good food, relatively friendly if not super timely and attentive service. Not sure about the “reservations necessary” maxim as it didn’t seem to be super busy—maybe to appear in demand? Would go again as the ambiance was a lot of fun and the food pretty good.
We had friendly service but the food was not good. We ordered 2 Cubans and fish tacos - the Cubans were not tasty and the meat was chewy and the fish tacos were too spicy.
Had an excellent Valentines dinner date! Recommend the steak. They were juicy and cooked perfectly. Also recommend coming here for brunch! The chicken and waffle sandwich is the absolute bomb!!
While the place looks very nice, and the service is good (even though there was barely anyone there), unfortunately the food isn't up to par. I keep trying this place in hopes it will be better, but just not a fan. The prices are reasonable, however.
The goal was to eat somewhere that had a calm and relaxed atmosphere on a Thursday night. Sixth gear was perfect for that on that evening
Where do I even begin! From the décor (lighting fixtures, glassware, bathroom) to the ambiance, this hidden South Boston gem was everything we expected and more. The food is amazing and the waiters were super friendly. We attended the 90s hip hop brunch and it was a wonderful event enjoyed by all. Will definitely be going back sooner rather than later :)
Had dinner here last week. You can actually carry on a conversation without yelling! The wait staff was quite pleasant. The selections on the menu go from appetizers to dessert. There are quite a few appetizers to choose from. Then the choices run from ample salads to full meals including tacos, burgers, pizza, steak which was the most expensive dish coming in at $22. Anyone would find something to their liking on this menu. The fried fish dinner was cooked to perfection and not all greasy. The cole slaw was delicious. The wine list was impressive for a neighborhood restaurant. I also saw a creative cocktail list. Our waitress checked in with us several times without being intrusive. I'll definitely be going back. And the steam punk decor is very whimsical!
Nice place. Comfy setting. Good food. Decent prices.
