Having established Manka's as one of the top 50 hotel restaurants in the country, the owners have moved down the road - to the corner of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Star Route One. They've revitalized Hotel Olema and a new restaurant within it: Sir and Star. Its tables groan with the best of West Marin. Guests are invited to enjoy a nibble and sip or a lingering meal of foods and wines from within reach. It will quickly become apparent that the stewards of this elegant old roadhouse so love where they live and live to celebrate all that grows, swims and is crushed within their midst.

One of the best meals I've had in Marin. We had the steak and duck tonight. Wait staff was friendly. Food was delicious and ambiance was great. Highly recommend.

We loved the waiters. They were friendly, interesting and attentive. All the locally cooked food was delicious with layers of flavor and just the right amount to barely finish the wonderful dessert. I loved the fireplace and hunting lodge feeling. It was definitely worth it.

The Sir and Star is a very nice restaurant. The meals were a little coming out of the kitchen. We didn’t say anything but the waiter noticed and comped is another round of drinks. Great ambience but just plan on taking it slow. They don’t rush you either which is nice

I can only comment to the service, as we were not able to make our reservation.

My wife had a medical emergency that afternoon, and, while I can’t recall their names, the employees I spoke with over phone were exceptional. They were beyond anything I’d expected or experienced, and I can only imagine that the back of house matches the kind pros working the front of house.

I look forward to actually making that date night soon to confirm!

What a gem! We loved the unique cozy decor bringing the outside in with multiple tree branches used. It was a little chilly but expected in a historical building. We were there early in the evening and it was pretty quiet, so some soft music could be a nice addition. The staff was nice and engaging. Most importantly, the food was very good. The menu was unique, a little limiting but sounds like it's changed regularly so worth going back. We really enjoyed the local Marin wines included. Definitely worth the beautiful drive out!

Huge disappointment as we recall the days when Sir and Star was really a worthwhile restaurant to visit. Saddened to mention that now those times are now gone. Wonderful food is replaced with a mediocre output delivered to your table with little regard to its preparation. The interminable delay between courses becomes an absolute test of patience. Maddeningly, the extreme price ($85/person) is not reflected in either the quality of the food offered nor in the insight to be provided by the server. Even the hostess fails to deliver even the briefest welcome as she directs you to your table for the long, long night. If you read these reviews with an aire of cynicism and believe this critical analysis unfair or misplaced, then by all means make your reservation and enjoy your meal. Our only thought, having left the restaurant we used to return again and again, now for the very last time, was to let anyone know who was reading this review to run, don’t walk away from this epicurean charade.

Only complaint was how long it took to get the food on the table between courses. A four hour dinner is too much!

Everything was great! We got the pre-fix menu and on top of that we got the filet mignon wagyu and foie gras. Pre-fix menu included a quail that was moist and not dry. Very surprisingly good! Foie gras was great and luckily not forbidden and the filet mignon was tender and delicious. Dessert was flourless cake of date and the one who made it comes out to tell you that the ingredients are local. It was very sweet of her. The cake was not super sweet and included salted caramel. Absolutely delightful! My fiancée and I will definitely come back.

We come from South West England, and the Sir and Star is my favorite restaurant in the US. It was our third visit (preceded by a visit to Manka's) and we hope to return as often as possible
Thanks to Daniel and Margaret and their friendly, informed and charming staff.

From our online review of the menu to dessert, we had a wonderful experience at Sir and Star. Very creative menu, with wonderful fresh, local, seasonal ingredients, beautifully presented and served. The space is very comfortable and exotically appointed. Service was outstanding--I can't wait to return!

love love love this place.

BUT. it's too bad opentable doesn't say this upfront - fri and sat nights are a prix-fixe menu. (or maybe it does, but not upfront enough.) i read this years ago on the S&S website but forgot, so i showed up with my party of three and the menu stared back at me, with a prix-fixe menu and large number next to a dollar sign. to top it all off, the waitstaff said, oh, by the way, there's a typo in the menu, it's not $65 per person, it's $85!

there was another typo - faux gras was labeled $20 on the menu but $15 on the bill.

it was totally worth it - food was great and we all left feeling full, and plus they gave a little dessert treat since there was a birthday at the table. BUT - just be aware that fri and sat nights will be pricey and not a la carte.

A nice prix fixe menu on Friday night with local foods. Decor was interesting with crispy trees jutting everywhere and we needed to walk around them to sit at our table. Very interesting food, small plates but very delicious. A restaurant a bit full of itself but good. Service took forever. We "dined" but I think we were in the mood to get in and out in less than 3 hours for the two of us.

Overall, good food in a nice setting. (Intermittently noisy child upset the ambience for about an hour, but wait staff were responsive and tried to help.) Fixed price tasting menu good but rather expensive for both quality and quantity. Appreciated the alternative selection for one of the dishes. Service overall was fine.

We spent the weekend in Pt Reyes/Inverness area, and made this our first dining choice on Friday evening. Parking lot is small, but plenty of room across the street. We were seated promptly upon arrival, and hostess showed awareness of a food allergy noted in my Open Table profile. Food highlights were the Faux Gras (comes with crostini & coarse sea salt), salmon (excellently prepared!), quail, and the beignet & icecream dessert. Given the price, a cup of coffee or tea should have been included. The pace at which meals were served could have been a little higher, as we spent a solid 2-1/2 hours at our table. Menu and wine list font could be slightly larger and thus easier to read in the dimly (yet romantically) lit room. Courteous service and knowledgeable wine recommendations.

Saturday night price fixe should have been easy, but, timing was off and the staff was quick to just say it was busy. Food brought out in the wrong sequence and then we realized they missed a course altogether. It was a birthday celebration that I mentioned several times yet no candle when dessert came. I’d been before and loved everything which is why I made this arrangement. For over $800 as a local I would go back to madcap. Better all around.

I had eaten here before with my husband a while ago and really liked the food so booked a reservation on OpenTable for myself and two friends while we were staying up in Point Reyes for the weekend. Unfortunately, neither the Open Table page for this restaurant, nor the Open Table confirmation is clear that Saturday nights are $85 prix fixe menu only, so I felt really bad when we showed up to find that we were all locked into a multi-course meal. When we brought up the confusion to the hostess - apparently there is an a la carte menu in the bar? - she just looked at me like I'd committed the worst faux pas ever, told me it was VERY CLEAR about the prix fixe (it wasn't - I just double checked here on Open Table), she would most definitely be charging my card should we choose to leave, etc. It was really uncomfortable all around - in the end we stayed because I didn't want to screw the waiter (who was nice) out of a Saturday night table and we were already there, but we all ended up having a much bigger meal than any of us really wanted. As for the food, several of the dishes were very good, although the main course came out absolutely cold for two of us (the other was piping hot, so it seemed like the two beef dishes had been sitting while the kitchen was waiting for the duck) and I kind of feel like they should be more on top of the timing if they are offering a high end experience. To be honest, even that wouldn't have really bothered me enough to write a review - it was the surprise about the prix fixe, and the hostess' response, that made the experience a not-so-great one.

Food was very good. I was disappointed to not have real wine glasses. They have clunky chalice type glasses for wine. I would have been very disappointed if I would have brought my own bottle of nice wine. If I come back I will bring my own stems. Wine list is very heavy marin Wines which is nice to see but also means very heavy in Pinot Noir. Loved the sunchoke soup and the focaccia was beautifully baked. We felt like service was rushing us though our courses as the next course arrived within seconds of clearing the plate for the previous course. We felt we had to slow down our eating so as not to feel rushed. Once the dessert was served we were left sitting for almost 15 minutes with no one checking on us. An then they asked. Could we help you with anything else?? Yeah- How about the check?? We may go back again and give them another shot but it was an expensive meal when you feel rushed.

A magical, delicious experience from start to finish. We spent our last night out in 2017 with Sir and Star, enjoying the perfectly executed atmosphere and multi-course menu. The leek soup, crab dish, and dessert were absolutely incredible, and the champagne selection was great. The light of perfectly positioned candelabras creates a very intimate, slightly theatrical environment - this felt like an extra special, romantic evening.

The place is quite strange, magical, weird even. Lots to look at all around. We were seated quickly through the jungle into the small dining room. The tasting menu was the only option and we had the wine "pairing" as well. The wine wasn't really paired with the food. It just came at random times and we weren't informed on what any of it was. At one point during the meal, it looked like we had about 34 wine glasses on the table, most empty, some not. The music was super strange. I think it was a famous choral Christmas song but sometimes you could barely hear it and at other times during the meal, it was so loud and sounded like someone was screaming in the dining room. All of the diners had to stop talking and most of us were looking up to see where the noise was coming from. You could barely hear yourself think.
My three friends finished their entrees a little before me and the waiter brought all the desserts quickly even though I was still working through my previous course. He then brought the check without asking if we wanted coffee. So, we called him back and had him clear some of the glasses so we could actually see our desserts and then asked for coffee. He brought the coffee quickly and dropped off the check again. After a few minutes, another server came over and asked us if we wouldn't mind leaving the table and reconvening in the parlor. He offered to buy us a glass of port which was nice. Unfortunately after leaving our table, we couldn't find any room in the parlor to sit. Finally, a large group was sat leaving a few seats for us to sit in. My husband was apparently in the way and he was asked to move so at that point, we just left.
Food fantastic. Fox wandering back and forth outside was cool. The wines were so so, the service was off putting and fairly dismal, ambiance was wild. For upwards of $175 per person, I expect more.

The food at Sir and Star delights and it all is locally sourced. The prix fix is wonderful but there is a fair amount of food. The service was excellent and well paced. There were lots of local wines to choose from. Because the dining space is divided into several small rooms, it's a great place for conversation even at busy times.

The pre fixe menu was the only option, no a la carte on the night we went. The food was fresh and local, but pricey at $85 plus tax and tip, not including coffee. Wine pairing was $55, and we opted out. A notable lack of gluten free and vegetarian options. Not a big selection of wine by the glass. Everything was expensive and we were disappointed.

Margaret was in the kitchen; food was awesome. The main servicer was on top of it and paced courses perfectly. The server who delivered our courses was, however, abrupt in his style and technique - almost dropping plates in front of us and just barely clearing our heads when doing so. Started with(add-ons) local liver and lingonberries - wonderful and plenty for three people. Buns and butter - divine - perfectly prepared pastries. Portions for dinner looked small initially but were ideal for the entire evening. Prix fix Menu started with sun choke soup and Brussel sprouts, roasted Smoked cod (was like butta!), Lamb course - large and in charge - again wonderful and plenty of it. Beignets topped off the night - better than any, tender, perfectly fried and served with a caramel egg nog sauce beside - better than New Orleans - really! As usual, Margaret decorated for the holidays with large displays of local cypress and pine, mistletoe, and candles. She does everything to match the season, the festivities, and the offerings by the local farmers. She and her staff really delivered. Wonderful night to celebrate the holidays with friends.

Pretentious. Poor service. At least 2 items listed on wine list not available. Lights out in in bathroom. Excessive plant decorations to the extent of interfering with seating, with washing hands in the women's bathroom, and being over-the-top overall. Prices substantially higher than quoted online. Misleading menu descriptions leading to surprises upon (eventual) food delivery. Obsequious wait staff. Minimal birthday response (one candle on one dessert).
However:
Pretty good food. Emphasis on local (Yea!) Nice ambiance apart from plant decorations.
Overall: I will not return until I hear the problems have been corrected.
