Having established Manka's as one of the top 50 hotel restaurants in the country, the owners have moved down the road - to the corner of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Star Route One. They've revitalized Hotel Olema and a new restaurant within it: Sir and Star. Its tables groan with the best of West Marin. Guests are invited to enjoy a nibble and sip or a lingering meal of foods and wines from within reach. It will quickly become apparent that the stewards of this elegant old roadhouse so love where they live and live to celebrate all that grows, swims and is crushed within their midst.

Food was very good. I was disappointed to not have real wine glasses. They have clunky chalice type glasses for wine. I would have been very disappointed if I would have brought my own bottle of nice wine. If I come back I will bring my own stems. Wine list is very heavy marin Wines which is nice to see but also means very heavy in Pinot Noir. Loved the sunchoke soup and the focaccia was beautifully baked. We felt like service was rushing us though our courses as the next course arrived within seconds of clearing the plate for the previous course. We felt we had to slow down our eating so as not to feel rushed. Once the dessert was served we were left sitting for almost 15 minutes with no one checking on us. An then they asked. Could we help you with anything else?? Yeah- How about the check?? We may go back again and give them another shot but it was an expensive meal when you feel rushed.

Wonderful as usual. We are locals, have eaten here many times and we always love it. The food and the atmosphere is very artfully done. By far the best dining experience in West Marin.

A magical, delicious experience from start to finish. We spent our last night out in 2017 with Sir and Star, enjoying the perfectly executed atmosphere and multi-course menu. The leek soup, crab dish, and dessert were absolutely incredible, and the champagne selection was great. The light of perfectly positioned candelabras creates a very intimate, slightly theatrical environment - this felt like an extra special, romantic evening.

The place is quite strange, magical, weird even. Lots to look at all around. We were seated quickly through the jungle into the small dining room. The tasting menu was the only option and we had the wine "pairing" as well. The wine wasn't really paired with the food. It just came at random times and we weren't informed on what any of it was. At one point during the meal, it looked like we had about 34 wine glasses on the table, most empty, some not. The music was super strange. I think it was a famous choral Christmas song but sometimes you could barely hear it and at other times during the meal, it was so loud and sounded like someone was screaming in the dining room. All of the diners had to stop talking and most of us were looking up to see where the noise was coming from. You could barely hear yourself think.
My three friends finished their entrees a little before me and the waiter brought all the desserts quickly even though I was still working through my previous course. He then brought the check without asking if we wanted coffee. So, we called him back and had him clear some of the glasses so we could actually see our desserts and then asked for coffee. He brought the coffee quickly and dropped off the check again. After a few minutes, another server came over and asked us if we wouldn't mind leaving the table and reconvening in the parlor. He offered to buy us a glass of port which was nice. Unfortunately after leaving our table, we couldn't find any room in the parlor to sit. Finally, a large group was sat leaving a few seats for us to sit in. My husband was apparently in the way and he was asked to move so at that point, we just left.
Food fantastic. Fox wandering back and forth outside was cool. The wines were so so, the service was off putting and fairly dismal, ambiance was wild. For upwards of $175 per person, I expect more.

The food at Sir and Star delights and it all is locally sourced. The prix fix is wonderful but there is a fair amount of food. The service was excellent and well paced. There were lots of local wines to choose from. Because the dining space is divided into several small rooms, it's a great place for conversation even at busy times.

The pre fixe menu was the only option, no a la carte on the night we went. The food was fresh and local, but pricey at $85 plus tax and tip, not including coffee. Wine pairing was $55, and we opted out. A notable lack of gluten free and vegetarian options. Not a big selection of wine by the glass. Everything was expensive and we were disappointed.

Margaret was in the kitchen; food was awesome. The main servicer was on top of it and paced courses perfectly. The server who delivered our courses was, however, abrupt in his style and technique - almost dropping plates in front of us and just barely clearing our heads when doing so. Started with(add-ons) local liver and lingonberries - wonderful and plenty for three people. Buns and butter - divine - perfectly prepared pastries. Portions for dinner looked small initially but were ideal for the entire evening. Prix fix Menu started with sun choke soup and Brussel sprouts, roasted Smoked cod (was like butta!), Lamb course - large and in charge - again wonderful and plenty of it. Beignets topped off the night - better than any, tender, perfectly fried and served with a caramel egg nog sauce beside - better than New Orleans - really! As usual, Margaret decorated for the holidays with large displays of local cypress and pine, mistletoe, and candles. She does everything to match the season, the festivities, and the offerings by the local farmers. She and her staff really delivered. Wonderful night to celebrate the holidays with friends.

Pretentious. Poor service. At least 2 items listed on wine list not available. Lights out in in bathroom. Excessive plant decorations to the extent of interfering with seating, with washing hands in the women's bathroom, and being over-the-top overall. Prices substantially higher than quoted online. Misleading menu descriptions leading to surprises upon (eventual) food delivery. Obsequious wait staff. Minimal birthday response (one candle on one dessert).
However:
Pretty good food. Emphasis on local (Yea!) Nice ambiance apart from plant decorations.
Overall: I will not return until I hear the problems have been corrected.

Really delicious, innovative organic, farm-fresh dinner. The faux-gras was outstanding and we loved the buffalo gelato at the end of our meal. The décor is bit sparse and eclectic, but the service was good and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

My wife took me to Sir and Star for a belated birthday dinner. What a wonderful experience. The restaurant has such charm and this night there were large tree branches decorating most of the rooms making for a true outdoor but indoor experience. Our tasting menu was very delicious and the service was calm and attentive. We will definitely return when we are in the area. Thank you to Sir and Star for a memorable dinner!

This was a special occasion , well worth it. The food was wonderful, inventive, great effort put in to it. Ambience great, informally elegant but not stuffy. The following I write as feedback to the owners. Our waiter was very snotty, as if he couldn't bear to be doing what he had to do. We weren't sure if it was because we were women or his job felt beneath him. He dropped the silverware quite loudly on the table. We tried to engage him politely, said how much we liked this dish or that, then gave up and enjoyed our evening despite him. The newly wed waiter who didn't serve us was friendly, smiled as he whizzed by. The place was not full, quite empty actually - it was during the week. Later friends of the owners sat next to our table and were very sociable and chatty to us, they were regulars we assume. The two owners came past our table a few times to serve them food and chat to them. Not once did they even deign to look our way and smile or nod. Honestly, it wouldn't have taken much. The place is intimate enough that it feels quite personal, as if you are in their home. We were dropping a lot of money for us - maybe not lots for others. We didn't take it out by leaving a crappy tip - we know making and serving food takes a lot of work at that level. I would go again, but eating out in a great restaurant should always be an experience of pleasure for your paying customers, and it was diminished by this ungraciousness.

Food was amazing, but wine by the glass and beer choices were extremely limited. The only red wine by the glass was a single pinot! Also the service was inconsistent-took awhile to get a waiter over with water/drink orders and then a very long time for the 2nd course. But the food is the star, so we will be back.

Very disappointing, especially after about 20 years at the Olema Inn (Sir and Star predecessor). A few especially bothersome issues:
1. Our Open Table reservation did not mention Prix Fixe on a Saturday evening, so we started off with virtually no choices and an $85/per menu that did not include wine or anything else but water.
2. The ambiance had changed from rustic and beautiful to a gray and cold environment - a grim setting
3. The wine list was fairly long, but only 4 choices for glasses of wine, and only 3 of those even close to reasonable in quality.
4. The servers seemed to be overworked. We waited for about 30 minutes between course 2 and 3, and waited about 20 minutes before course 1.
5. The table for two was strangely designed and elongated so that I had to lean far forward to have a conversation with my wife.
6. The lamb entree was mediocre, chewy with very little actually available meat.
7. The dessert ice cream nearly saved the day - delicious.
I don't think I've ever written a bad review after a huge number of meals reserved via Open Table. I hope that the proprietors will be able to turn things around so that this is again a dinner place to look forward to.

Sir and Star at the Olema has everything you look for in a great restaurant. The inn itself is a beautiful, old structure, the interior design is stunning and original, every dish (this is not my first visit) is carefully thought out and beautifully executed, delicious and surprising. Portions are a fair and appropriate size, seasoning is subtle and refined, I've been many times over the years since it opened under new ownership and have to say that if you haven't visited it since then, and were disappointed with the restaurant in its former iteration, GO AGAIN. You will be thrilled.

Was so sorry when their prior restaurant, Manka, was destroyed, but Sir & Star is a worthy successor. First rate ingredients and preparations, hyper-local, serious food but not taken seriously (whimsical menu descriptions & all). Gorgeous floral arrangements in a cozy, serene dining room. Well done.

I've been to Sir and Star three times, each was a different experience yet the food, service and ambiance are always consistently stellar. The first time, they lost power from a big winter storm and closed the dining rooms, but still accommodated us near the fire place and fully by candlelight. The second time was an impromptu stop for a drink that turned into a full blown multi-course meal. And lastly was for my anniversary where we were treated to nice touches like flowers, champagne and surprises from the kitchen.

Sir and Star easily ranks as my favorite restaurant in Marin.

I have had many good meals at Manka's, Olema Inn and Sir & Star. This meal was very disappointing. Three tiny oysters were bathed in mignonette. The oysters were so small that you couldn't taste the oysters. Keep the mignonette on the side. Soup was tasteless--a small portion but I left half. All I remember is salt and butter. The "Bouillabaisse" was a plate of vegetables bathed in a garlic sauce. Am I the only one who expected some fish with my vegetables? I needed a steak knife to cut the broccoli stalk.

Run by the legendary owners of Manka's down the street in Inverness, CA, Sir and Star takes over as West Marin's "new legend." Outstanding food, creative and thoughtful wine list, and lovely personable service. We celebrated my girlfriend's 50th birthday. It was a perfect night. Felt like we were dining in the 1920's. In the last couple times I visited Sir & Star the service has been on the decline... inattentive, orders/requests forgotten, inconsistent information provided by different servers, insufficient menus provided - had to remind them we were still waiting for menus after 15 minutes, and an overall lack-luster and possibly unhappy affect from the servers. The reason I fell in love with Sir & Star when it first opened, and the reason it was my favorite restaurant within a 300 mile radius, was that you were walking into not just a great restaurant but an experience, a curated , yet wonderfully restrained experience. On my last two visits, it's been the opposite, as if no one cares about the experience the guests are having, or perhaps are even mildly antagonistic about it. I'm sad to say I'm not sure I will return.

We've eaten at Sir & Star many times and had wonderful meals, but this last visit was awkward.
The host made us and another table wait in the always striking yet sterile entry /lobby for 15-20mins (depsite the tables being ready) because they had run out of Menus...
They should have showed us to our tables and we would have been happy to order a drink, while menus were "recovered".
They had run out of Sparkling water, which is odd.
The wine by the glass was exceptionally limited, so my husband had to order an entire bottle to himself (luckily was allowed to take the left-over 1/2 bottle with him.
The staff was perfectly nice but the inconsistency with the menu stretched past the charming quirkiness we've always loved about the place.
We wouldn't come back for a dinner for 2 again... maybe with a group...

My favorite restaurant! It is always a pleasure and well worth the (2 hour) drive to enjoy the Sunday supper tasting menu. Such a treat! The leek soup was so delicious, and the gnocchi with mussels and mushroom crepe were out of this world!
Thank you Sir + Star for being our much loved destination restaurant.

We had dinner on a Saturday evening, which we found had only a fixed menu ... since we made our reservation on Open Table we were unaware of it ... so it became a very special evening & worth it! The food was delicious! If there was one downside to the evening, it was the time between courses ... at one point it was more than 40 mins. Fortunately we were with family visiting from out of the country, so we had much to talk about ... if we had been imbibing more maybe the time wouldn't have been as noticeable. We will definitely return for another meal because what we did have was superb!!

This is a unique place with great food and creative flair but want to point out that the online menu is not representative of what might be available on a specific day. While it indicates creative use of local ingredients, for people with health issues who need to review menus in advance it did not seem clear that the actual menu is created each day and may not have the items you see online.

Sir and Star is, hands down, the best restaurant in Marin County. In a county drowning in pedestrian Italian restaurants and flabby attempts at less common cuisines, no one comes close to the quality, creativity, outstanding sourcing, unique wine selections, and exemplary service of Sir and Star. Be aware: it is pricey. But the value is high, worth every dime. The ambiance is modest; the restaurant's priorities favor your eyes, nose, and taste buds, not your need to be wrapped in drekorator chic.

Tryi it. And if you like it, try Madcap (Chef Ron Siegel) in San Anselmo. These two spots stand head and shoulders above the others in Marin.
