Having established Manka's as one of the top 50 hotel restaurants in the country, the owners have moved down the road - to the corner of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Star Route One. They've revitalized Hotel Olema and a new restaurant within it: Sir and Star. Its tables groan with the best of West Marin. Guests are invited to enjoy a nibble and sip or a lingering meal of foods and wines from within reach. A hidden gem in West Marin. Always very enjoyable. The chef seems to welcome and enjoy the challenge of the different diet restrictions thrown at them.

Service staff has to get some training.
When we entered the Maitre d' turned her back on us without a greeting and went into the dining room for some reason. After waiting several minutes she came back and then seated us.
Dinner was advertised as a lingering prix fixe meal. We were given a printed menu which our waiter didn'talk about at all. It described the meal and also oysters and faux gras we could begin with additionally. We ordered a split of champagne and we had just gotten that when the waiter appeared with our first course. We said we wanted oysters to begin and he was perplexed about what to do. We got a plate of 5 oysters and there was 2 of us. Thoughtless. How are we to share? We inquired if there was a wine paring. The waiter looked like a deer in the headlights. The courses were served rapidly. My duck was whisked away before I had finished. No lingering dinner here. It was excellent food but the experience wasn't. It's a shame. This was a $400 meal.

We thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary dinner at the Sir and Star. We had the Friday night supper menu - a delicious asparagus soup with a mushroom drizzle, a small fried king cod filet with asparagus, and date cake with buffalo mile ice cream for dessert. My husband had the duck with polenta which was delicious and piping hot. All of the food was locally sourced. I had a skirt steak which was good, but not as exciting (I asked them to tone down the heat in the accompanying sauce, which was probably a factor). Our server was friendly and very knowledgeable about both the food and their wine, much of which is from Marin County. We will definitely return and also recommend it to our friends.

Local sourced produce and meats, super fresh ingredients. Everything was delicious but a tad too salty for both of us, it is just too bad because it detracted from the quality of the ingredients.

I seldom give max stars for a rating, but S as evening closes in, the light in the room softens as striking candelabras and a few incandescents take over; tables are spaced graciously; little in the way of "decor" distracts from the modest, informal feeling. I rattle on about all of this because an important part of any remarkable dining experience is, in fact, the whole experience, not just the meal. So allow yourself to submit to the romantic simplicity of this place and be transported to France or Italy or Sweden ... the choice is yours.

The menu is small and changes frequently. Innovation is the hallmark of the kitchen. There is much creativity with vegetable and protein products of local West Marin purveyors, from land and sea. There are choices among seafood, fowl, and some variety of red meat. Or interesting vegetarian. A few menu items have achieved icon status and are permanent offerings, like a superb appetizer of duck liver pate ("Faux Gras") and beignets for a sweet-ish finish. Preparation and presentation are meticulous. The wine list offers a number of very good Marin County reds or whites that don't often appear on wine lists in other Marin County restaurants.

Service can sometimes be spotty, but servers are knowledgeable, personable, and helpful. The room is typically on the quiet side, which is a blessing in the SF Bay Area where so many restaurants offer you a table on what amounts to SFO's Runway 1A. A pox on them.

Bonus: the late afternoon or early evening (daylight) drive to Olema is a beautiful segue from hectic life.

Our entire experience was wonderful! This was our second time here. We couldn’t wait to return. The food pairings were spot on, yet always with a unique unexpected touch to the dish. We love the atmosphere and ambience, it’s kind of indescribable in a way, you just have to come and see for yourself. I think what tops off Sir and Star is the historical beauty of the old mansion. It puts you in another world. We have very fond memories here and whomever the chef is at Sir and Star she/he ought to be applauded for their talent.
Looking forward to many more visits!!

Food was excellent. Service was less than what we were expecting. We were not asked if we wanted to order wine or other beverage and ended up asking our server. Never asked if we wanted a second glass. Seems unusual for this caliber of restaurant.ay have been an off night for our server.
Food choices were good and we had quail and hanger steak from supper menu. Price was very reasonable for four course meal. Plus dessert.

Beautiful food primarily sourced locally. The faux gras is a beautiful duck mousse paired with the best buttery homemade toast around.

Hidden treasure with an exceptionally creative menu. Like eating in someone's living room, except that the someone is creating innovative items using locally sourced ingredients. Will definitely be returning.

We were asked if there was a special occasion upon making the reservation, and we responded it was our 41st wedding anniversary. It was acknowledged when we arrived at the restaurant, and that was it, so why bother ask? The waiter was able to substitute the fish entre from the a la carte menu to the prix fixe menu which was delicious and he really appreciated it.

A wonderful west Marin destination, Sir and Star is worth the trip! The Saturday prix fix menu was very good, (highlights included the Faux Gras, Asparagus course, Smoked Sablefish, Duck and Buffalo Ice Cream) but I personally prefer the regular a la carte menu. No matter which day you go you will not be disappointed!

Beautiful surroundings in a lovely appointed historic building. Food was delicious and chef accommodated a food allergy with no issue. Nice wine list.

Best place to warm up and wind down after a long Pt Reyes hike. Make time for a glass of local wine by the fire. My favorite restaurant in the Bay Area.

My friend and I went on a weekend evening when they only had a fixed price tasting menu. All of the staff were friendly, helpful, and available. Although the menu was fixed the waiter assured us we could change things if we had a dietary preference. The wine list by the glass was very limited - only two reds.

The portions were modest - not a complaint since it is a tasting menu - and there were a lot of courses so there was plenty to eat. They make an attempt to have locally sourced quality ingredients; vegetables, fish food was well prepared but nothing was a real stand out. It was an enjoyable meal but somehow it seemed too pricey for the quality of the cooking. It is in a tourist area so maybe my perception of price vs quality is off.

Absolutely a wonderful experience! Fabulous, fresh food and beautiful atmosphere inside and out. The staff was kind and fun and we lingered longer than we needed, just not wanting it to end.

We had a 6:30 reservation and didn't see wait staff until 6:50. Drinks didn't come until 7:00. Food service didn't happen until 7:15. We ended up paying the check at 9:30. Wait service was sloooooooow. Food was underwhelming. Maybe they had a really off night.

For its notoriety I was disappointed. I would expect more taste exploration. There was a similarity among all plates, very little variation in texture, sweet, sour, color, hot, cold. I want more excitement for my taste buds. The best dish was the spinach and aspargus with crab sauce. The house desert although good and was the only plate with sweet, sour and warm and was still just beignets.

Sir and Star really hit all the notes the other night. The roasted crab is the best Dungeness I've ever had and their old standard "faux gras" appetizer was yummy as always. The server was authentic and attentive, albeit a little clueless about the wines. Overall a very romantic, special evening.

The Sir and Star is our very favorite place to dine in the US. The food is extraordinary, the rooms are divinely unique, quiet and comfortable, and just about everything is exquisitely made. There is palpable thoughtfulness and love in every bite. We don’t live near it, but go at least once or twice a year for special occasions. Margaret has an extraordinary touch in everything she does! Brava!

Seemed like the waitress was trying to handle too many tables at once. They don’t have a great wine list - we tried twice and both times their recommendations disappointed. They served crab legs that required cracking the shells and everything but no bowls or extra napkins to deal with the mess. Overall, it was not a great meal.

Have been here several times.
Usually loved it. Last time food not as outstanding and service not good. Pleasant but not good.
And in the winter why is it chilly in the restaurant?

Great service in a very special environment. We were there for Christmas time and the decorations were stunning and natural and the food was brilliant.
