Silver - Cathedral Commons
We weren't sure what to expect after reading many reviews: some positive, some not. We were there for an early dinner before an event at the Washington National Cathedral. Both the hostess and our server were not only cheerful and pleasant, but very efficient and helpful. My spouse had the under 600 calorie scallops dinner and was surprised by how generous and well-prepared it was. I expressed interested in the fish taco warm bowl until I saw that the fish was fried. Our server said I could have the Mahi Mahi grilled instead of fried for a small additional charge. It was delicious: warm brown rice, fresh grilled fish, avocado, salsa, veggies, etc. All in all, we enjoyed satisfying, healthy meals at a very reasonable price.
We enjoyed a fish entree and the chicken lemon dish; both were delicious. Even though we arrived at the change of shift, the service was smooth and attentive. We've been to this restaurant twice now and will definitely return for more meals. It has a friendly neighborhood vibe.
Very bad service. 3 different servers, none of whom took ownership of our table. Then the restaurant had the nerve to mark us as no shows on open table. This after poor service we didn’t complain about and $100 spent and being on time for our reservation. A very poor showing for Silver. We will think twice about returning.
Dependably good, but could be lots better. Omelet with smoked salmon was ok, but not too flavorful and a little skimpy. Service was decent and friendly, but no longer waits than necessary to order and get check. Despite making a reservation, I was again seated near the waitstaff station, which is noisy and unappealing to look at. Better experience when sitting in one of the booths upfront.
Love how you've transformed the notion of "diner." Food was pretty good although my oatmeal was not hot. Menu is interesting and fun. Will come again.
Enjoyed a comfort dish of fried chicken, Mac and cheese, and garlic green beans, sitting in one of the comfortable booths. Our server was very attentive without bring overly so. Silver is a neighborhood restaurant for me; I’m glad we have it.
Good spot for family dining. However, if you’re not into kids and dogs sharing your dining space, this may not be the place for you. Overall, the food and service is great. We were visiting a friend in D.C. and we liked our dinner so much (try the shrimp and grits) we went back the next morning for brunch!
We've been to this restaurant many times and enjoyed it. Last time there, my hamburger was undercooked. When I brought it to the attention of the waitress, she brought over the manager right away, who was very apologetic. They served me a completely new dish, properly cooked, and the manager offered to pay for it. Very responsive and responsible service. And the burger was excellent.
The place is very good for lunch. The service was quick and helpful, the food chices were explained in a helpful way.
Enjoyed the experience
We were in town for an event, had time for breakfast on Sunday and found Silver. The food was fantastic and the service was very good. I highly recommend the Chorizo and Bison Hash Huevos Rancheros and the Oreo Boozy Milk Shake! To die for! The pineapple right side up pancakes were great too!
I booked a Rez very shortly before arriving and then arrived early enough for the proceeding time slot. The hostess refused to seat us despite open tables and my knowledge that I could have booked earlier- moments before.
She gave some explanation regarding technology but I think it’s a problem when managing tech gets in the way of providing service.
I’d been meaning to go to silver for a while but won’t be back.
The atmosphere was great and the food was decent. The service was great. We were disappointed about the Market Fish and Chips. There was very little fish for the price we paid, and it definitely was not worth the price.
Appetizer came out before our drinks, one of our dinners was placed incorrectly by the server. I received my food 20 minutes before my fiancé because of their mistake. The servers are nice and offered us free dessert, but we wanted to go out to eat and enjoy ourselves and just left feeling frustrated.
This restaurant offered a nice selection. I got the scallops and they were wonderful. Nice roomy booths and pleasant surroundings. I would highly recommend this place.
The miso salmon salad is terrific. The management is also so thoughtful - last time, an order of bacon was forgotten, and they gave us a voucher for a free entree. This time, they let us redeem that voucher even though it was past the expiration date. They really value their customers!
Worst service in 10 years
Our server was friendly and attentive, and three of the four of us found the food to be good. It took a long time for the food to arrive, though, and the restaurant was too noisy for us to talk without shouting.
Good good. The service is a bit slow. Had to ask for our drinks twice. The server blamed the bar. Not a great answer. Just apologize for the wait and bring the drinks. I think the server just forgot to pick them up from the bar.
The food and service were excellent. The end booth was a little tight.
We sat outside on a Sunday morning. It was lively and social and very pleasant. Felt like the place to have brunch!
We had a great dinner with good service at a reasonable price. Get the Apple Beignets, a la mode of course! Wonderful place to go after a concert at the National Cathedral.
We went for dinner after a performance at the National Cathedral. Even though we were a little late for our reservation, we were seated immediately. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The waitress was very pleasant, took our order and then someone else brought our drinks and dinners. That was problem, it wasn't clear who to flag down for another drink. Eventually the original waitress brought us another round. I wish restaurants would get away from this team service idea and go back to one server per table.
The Mahi Mahi Roasted Corn + Avocado Gluten-Free dish was amazing and will bring me back to this restaurant. Good location.
Silver is great for brunch. Skip non-brunch items. Quality and taste at dinner (multiple visits) disappoints. Brunch they do very well!
Very good for a quiet lunch -- we wanted to visit, and I asked for a quiet spot/booth when I made the reservation... they paid attention and made it happen!! good menu, good service ... all perfect!
Host did not bother to complete Open Table process, so I went down as a no show. Service was erratic. Steak Frites was medium well, not medium rare.
Nice breakfast place, love the juices and service is always good.
Silver has a great and unique menu with plenty of choices. The bison huevos rancheros were great, and we loved the brussel sprout side dish.
Our waitress was wonderful. The food was good, elevated diner fair. Our celebration was fun and light hearted for a birthday! Thank you.
The last few times we have eaten here, they seem perhaps understaffed...? Food can take forever to come out and it can take a long time to get the attention of a server. Food quality, when it arrives, remains high.
Food was excellent. Service can be a bit spotty but overall a very pleasant experience for a neighborhood restaurant.
I really want to love this place since it looks great and is so close to my house, but the food and service really uneven. The coffee is great, and the bison huevos rancheros are sublime, but everything else I have tried is just fair ( and at these prices the food needs to be better than that). Meatloaf, pot pie, pancakes, steak and eggs, hamburgers, fries, all I have ordered and all just fair. The bad news is that they don’t have much competition in this genre in the neighborhood, so they probably won’t improve.
Service was extremely slow. Outside of the waiter taking our order, he never came back to the table. Wasn’t that busy so not sure the reason for the slow service. Food was ok but everything was lukewarm.
Good neighborhood dining.
We had to ask twice for the drinks we ordered, it the server was pleasant. Great scallops, perfectly cooked
Had to wait a long time for a server.
Had to beg to have water refilled. Food adequate; ambiance fine. Service slow and indifferent.
This is a great extension of the Silver Diner brand into a more upscale concept. Thoughtful servers, they seem well trained and attentive. The menu was clear and simple, and the food was delicious. Seating outside along Wisconsin Avenue was comfortable and enjoyable.
Good service good food as is always the case. Had a vegetarian in our group and was happy with choices and
Service was extremely fast, from checking in, to the food, to getting the check.
Sorry to say ... the food is great but the service is just not there. Second time that we've experienced slow/poor service.
