Great fixed price, three course menu. We started out with very good signature cocktails and ended up with an excellent baked Alaska dessert. Very good wine menu and great service on the selection of wines that went with the meal.
The food is outstanding, as all of Chef Michael's food always is. The ambiance is comfortable and evokes fine dining, but without being stodgy. The staff is attentive without being overbearing, and well trained. There are really no negatives.
We chose to have dinner at Silencieux to host our friends for a special dinner. We were not disappointed. The space at Silencieux is small and intimate, perfect for a dinner to visit with friends. The service was attentive. There were many choices for each course on the prix fix menu: I chose the smoked salmon appetizer, lamb rack for my entree and the berry pavlova for dessert. Portions were ample and presentations meticulous and beautiful. What I especially enjoyed were the sauces - complex, yet not heavy. A very special evening enjoyed by all.
Above all, the food is great. Across my party, we ordered most of the items on their menu for that day, and without exception everything tasted excellent. The chef came and personally greeted each of us, which was a great touch as well. The only downer would be the wait staff, unfortunately they were not knowledgeable enough about the menu. When one of my party asked for the flavor profile of a dish that offered a choice between Grand Marnier and Praline, over several repeated queries the waiter could not describe the flavor and would only keep repeating the names. Afterwards, when I asked what the nightly selection of cheeses were, I was told that it's "5 cheeses from our cellar", when I repeated the question, he called over a friend and between the 2 of them, all I managed to get was "some cow cheese, some sheep cheese". Overall it didn't detract too much from the food, which was excellent, but I can't help but feel that the wait staff didn't quite do their menu justice.
He food was wonderful! There were 4 of us and we had 4 different 1st and 2nd courses. Nicely presented plates and very tasty food. The service was ok, but not great. They forgot to pour wine for one of us even though it was the person that tasted the wine. They didn’t remember who ordered which dish (this didn’t bother us much since we were sharing), but I expect better. Despite the name, the room was noisier than we would have liked. Regardless, the food was worth going back for another visit.
Having been a fan of Michael’s, and reading diner and critic reviews, we wanted to try and be open minded to our experience. First, the noise level was good. Not as loud as some reviewers stated and not so quiet to make it uncomfortable to talk for fear everyone would hear your conversation. The music was a little bland, Tony Bennett type of vibe, but it didn’t hinder the lively energy of the room. People were dressed smartly and comfortably. Michael made a point of greeting each customer table-side, which is a classy touch he’s kept from his previous restaurant.
The amuse bouche was a yummy, warm, cheesy puff. The bread course was tasty with three different salt selections, butter and two crispy crusted types of bread. Unfortunately, we couldn’t understand our server’s description of the bread because of his accent and mumbling. Our waiter had to keep going back to the kitchen for basic answers to our questions about the menu. He didn’t instill confidence he cared much about the food or that he would remember answers to the questions for the next customer. Having said that, the staff was professional, the restaurant was well staffed and the timing of the courses were on point. We never felt rushed and staff was attentive. Our main courses were above par and the soufflé was one of the best I’ve ever had. The amount of food served was generous, which made it hard to hold back... we left full!
Overall, the chef is outshining the staff but hopefully with time and experience both front and back of house will be in sync and then watch out!
You should definitely give it a try... we will be back!
Excellent job of turning a very good (but underused) restaurant into three separate dining areas, with totally different vibes. Silencieux is most like Restaurant Michael used to be; three-course prix-fixe menu featuring many of the standards (foie gras, lobster ravioli, smoked salmon appetizers, Dover Sole, filet of beef, lamb, duck entrees, souffles, tarts, pastries for dessert). Service was excellent; space was very quiet, despite a loud crowd at adjoining Aboyer; atmosphere/dress is business casual. My husband enjoyed his lobster ravioli and I loved my very ample portion of smoked salmon. The filet of beef was reportedly good (though it was a bit rare for 'medium') and I loved the Dover Sole (though it was a bit too salty). Praline souffle was outstanding. We love this restaurant because the food is reliably good, they feature menu items I would not cook at home or find at other nearby establishments, it's not impossible to get a reservation a few days in advance, prices are reasonable, parking is easy and it's in the northern suburbs. We have had it with the traffic traveling downtown - it's just not worth the hassle! If you've not tried Silencieux, George Trois or Aboyer, I highly recommend you do so...I think we need to support our suburban restaurateurs!
End of summer dinner before kids return. Throughly enjoyable dinner. Loved the course options, quiet space and excellent service.
It was our Wedding Anniversary. There was another couple celebrating their’s as well. The food is excellent classic French. Great Dover Sole. Fabulous foil gras. Perfect Grand Marnier soufflé. Quiet but white tablecloths would upgrade the whole experience.

food was very good. even the bread service was quite remarkable. only disappointment was the noise level; i thought it would be a bit quieter. the hard ceiling and floor rendered the restaurant quite noisy, which is not what we were looking for.
also, for the price, i would have liked a white tablecloth.
Wonderful meals, wonderful service but not romantic and certainly not “silencieux!” We liked the old Michael restaurant better! But our anniversary was recognized appropriately. The foie gras appetizer was incredible, and the quail entree unique with a spicy sausage stuffing. My wife absolutely loved her lobster ravioli and rack of lamb, and our soufflés were fantastic. Go with proper expectations.
We’ve been visiting Restaurant Michael for several years and were always very pleased. Hostess could not find our reservation. Manager walked over and immediately found and seated us. My wife joked they’ve increased the price and taken away the table cloth. The room was chilly and loud elevator music was playing and even with the room half full when we arrived conversation was challenged. Then they filled the 4top next to us . The waiter could not fit between the tables, and all I could hear was the gentleman telling everyone st his table, the staff and wine steward how complex the wine was he brought. Someone must have said something about the temperature as Michael rushed over to adjust the thermostat.
My dinner (beef) was excellent, wife’s fish and sauce were good but was barely warm.
Service was good, but didn’t seem up to Michael standards. I was probably put off because staff didn’t fit between tables and either had to reach over me or slide between our table and the wall. Ask for a table and not booth.
Because of many fond memories we will try again
Have been a fan of Chef Michael since we discovered Restaurant Michael about 5 years ago. I was saddened when he decided to close Michael and open two new restaurants in it's place. I should not have worried, Silencieux is lovely and the food is delicious. Michael always comes out and talks to the guests which makes the experience much more personal. Have also dined at Aboyer when it first opened. Food was outstanding, service a little off but I believe that has changed and now running more smoothly. I look forward to many more dinners at both establishments. George Trois is on my list in the near future.
Silencioux is touted as a quiet restaurant. The noise from the next room was infernal and it seeped thru the constantly open door in between to allow service staff to come and go. In addition very music was piped into he room at such such a level that we had to request they lower the volume which they did. Service was slow which we wouldn’t have minded if the place was quiet as advertised.
One of our guests had a mushroom allergy and let the staff know. Somehow she ended up w mushrooms on her plate which were quickly noticed and removed by the staff but it shouldn’t have happened to begin with
The service was not up to the standards of fine dining that the restaurant is going for. We had to ask several times for our water glasses to be refilled- while paying for the sparking water service. Additionally, our table was not cleared shortly after each course so our empty dishes and crumbs from our courses sat in front of us for quite a long time. The bread service was great with hot piping bread, great butter and several different salts to try with the bread and butter. The Dover Sole entree was very good as was the soufflé dessert but hubby’s steak was not cooked to the temperature he requested- asked for medium rare and it was much too close to medium.
It was very cold in the space. A/C was blowing on our table. It seems like the want to be all things, but I’m not sure the kitchen is ready for that, because our service definitely lagged. However the food wad good and I would return...possibly after they have gooten the bugs out.
Beautiful presentation on all courses. Also wine selection had some reasonably priced good wines. Hopefully will become a destination restaurant like Le Francais.
First time back since the change, and they are headed in the right direction. Selection of food and wine very solid, and service was nicely done. The room has little personality and needs some refinements.
There was a snafu with our reservation, but once they sorted it out, they were very open that they had erred and that we could not get a table for 30 minutes or so. They invited us to sit at the bar and that they would comp us drinks and apps until our table was ready and we accepted. They could not have been nicer, and while it took a little more than 30 minutes, we were pleased with our treatment. The food was very good. We had lamb and beef as entrees. The perigord sauce on the beef was great. The sauce on the lamb was intense, but slightly oversalted for my taste. I've had a fois gras appetizer from Chef Michael before, and while it was a beautiful presentation and the accompaniments were solid, the slice of fois gras was not as melt in your mouth good as I've had elsewhere. I think I just like it seared a touch more. The coconut ice cream was some of the best I've had. All in all, a very nice evening and I'd recommend it highly.
The food was as excellent as the beautiful presentation. Michael has definitely made the most of his remodel of his previous space into three separate restaurants and dining experiences.I could certainly hear the conversation of my dining companions but it’s a small space with nothing to absorb sounds so it was noisier than I would have liked. Our server was “learning the ropes” under the supposed tutelage of the experienced waiter who paid her far too little attention. She was pleasant, in fact delightful, but the service wasn’t again what one would have expected in such a fine dining establishment. I was disappointed that no notice was taken of the anniversary we were celebrating as I had specified that we would be their for my companions’ special anniversary when I made the reservation. The table settings and dinnerware are absolutely beautiful. To start and end the meal Michael has kept his delicious cheese puffs and dark chocolate truffles. The olive bread is scrumptious and is accompanied by unsalted butter and three very different salts. The cheese plate was wonderful. All in all it was a good experience in a fine dining establishment. Next time we want to try Aboyet.
It’s so nice what Chef Michael has done with the restaurants. 3 concepts under 1 roof. The food is outstanding, the wine list is accessible with great takes from some successful vineyards. Yet not name brands. A creative but traditional cocktail menu. We will go back many times to all 3 restaurants.
The food was great...but they are still learning. There were four of us. The server never knew who had ordered which item. At this price level I expect the correct selection served without having to direct them.
One person got the cheese course. The server could not tell hm what all the cheeses were when they were served.
We weren’t offered tea or coffee til the table was cleared and we were ready to leave. Well after we finished dessert.
No listing of Scotches or Bourbons.
The food was great! My lamb chops were cooked perfectly, everyone else also cleaned their plates. It’s a little louder that “silent”, but definitely conversation friendly.
I have faith they will master the service issues. I’ll definitely be back...but I may give it a little time!
Silencieux is the new Michael.....the same highly creative delicious food, excellent wines and attentive service. Michael has thoughtfully created three distinct restaurants with three different price points. This is the one that is in our "sweet spot" for special occasion dining.
Beautiful preparation, knowledgeable wait staff, great selection of apps, main, and dessert.
I went here with my husband on my 40th because I didn’t want to drive all the way into the city....but I kind of regret this decision. The food was actually super sub par for the reviews I’ve read. I understand it is no Alinea or Acadia in the city....but come on. Almost everything We ordered (2 app, 2 entrees, 2desserts) were alllllll so underwhelming. I really did like the duck confit...but that’s about it. Lobster ravioli was super salty, escargot was actually very nasty, filet was dry and had very discouraging scent to it, duo berries were too sweet, and souffle smelled weird. My husband’s duck was flavorful & tasty so he switched with me mid-dinner since it was my birthday....but even he couldn’t finish the steak.
I don’t know what the other reviewers had for dinner but either they had a different chef, completely different order, or they don’t know good food. Although I liked how quiet and private the hall was, it was tiny, with 3 drunk men talking so loud I could hear their whole convo 3 tables over. Not a good crowd, and mediocre food at best. What a disappointment.
We were here for the first time just before they closed for renovation. The new decor and menu were both excellent; everyone at my table were delighted with everything they ordered. Room was quiet, we could hear ourselves talk, the service was perfectly timed. We will return.
We love the new concept at Silenceaux. We have been a fan of the old Michaels as well as George Trois. This fills a niche - not as expensive as George Trois, more upscale than Michaels. The new larger room is better for the younger crowd (we “boomers” can’t sustain. A restaurant any more - it has to appeal to the younger crowd. Get over it!)
Once again the North Shore has an upscale, semi-classical French restaurant for special occasions. This "new" place has all of the polished service and stellar food of Michael's previous version, but now there is a quieter, more intimate experience for people who want a leisurely and conversation-friendly fine dining dinner. The 3-course fixed price menu offered good selections using seasonal ingredients and was a more than reasonable price point given the quality of ingredients and preparation. The cocktail and wine lists were lovely, and the addition of some very thoughtful mocktails was a real bonus for our teetotaling dinner companions.
We could not wait to visit the newly opened Silencieux and we were not disappointed. The experience was very similar to Restaurant Michael and we were delighted. The service was excellent, the Prix Fixe menu was surprisingly generous and our meals were perfect, as always. We started with both the Foie Gras and the caviar service. For our main course I ordered the Filet of Beef and my husband had the Roast Rack of Lamb. Wonderful! We ended our meal with a selection of cheeses and port, then coffee. One of our favorite ways to spend a Saturday night. Our next reservation with the restaurant group is brunch at Aboyer on Father’s Day. Can’t wait!
Michael closed, and the space it occupied is now Silencieux and Aboyer. Silencieux is about 8 tables in the partitioned-off E third of the restaurant space. It's the quiet space separate from the noisier and more casual Aboyer bar & tables.
The food is pure Michael: well executed, French, classical. Ditto the service, gentle and competent. Menu is a 3 course prix-fixe with interesting choices. The problem, and the reason for four rather than five stars is the somewhat odd feeling of the space. There's quite an echo from the bare painted walls, all a dark color unrelieved by drapery or pictures. It feels new (which of course it is) and also unfinished; a little like a medical waiting room without the magazines. I'm sure the team there will sort out the vibe as the restaurant settles down.
The space aside, our meal was excellent and we will certainly return.
Silencieux and Aboyer have my highest recommendation
On entering the newly redesigned Michaels, we were met with a deafening noise level in the bistro/bar area. Had we made reservations there we would have left. Tile floors, bare walls and a glass wall separating the bistro from Silencieux make it an echo chamber. A friend we saw there said he was hoarse from shouting to his wife. 20-somethings who dine downtown might love the din; mature patrons will not. Silencieux is a small dining room with six tables closed off from the bistro. It has the same tile floor and bare walls. Thin curtains over the windows reduce the noise level somewhat. The four-tops were each seated with two people each so it was not too loud. It would have been if there were four people at each table. The food was typical Michaels: innovative and very good. The $85 set price menu provided a nice variety of dishes. The service was excellent. The small size encouraged some interaction between tables. In sum, very good food but in desperate need of noise reduction.
John, please allow me to get this straight. You had very good, innovative food and variety to choose from with cordial service but because the place did not have the feel of a funeral home, you feel it does not fit your dining needs? I understand completely? Michael
