Conveniently located across from Lincoln Center and a startling revelation in shiny black lacquer, Shun Lee exudes Asian chic with grand authority.
For haute Chinese cuisine, it’s among New York City’s best. Regional offerings include crispy Grand Marnier prawns with honey walnuts (Canton), braised sea bass in hot bean sauce (Hunan) and shredded beef with leeks and hot peppers (Szechwan). Specialties include beggar’s chicken baked in lotus leaves and clay (requires one day’s notice), Hunan tripe, sweetbreads with black mushrooms and of course, Beijing Duck.

We used to enjoy the walk-around dim sum carts and the piping hot dishes from them. Last night was a disappointment. No carts, so we ordered appetizers that came all att once while we were eating soup. Of course they were cool when we ate them. The barbecued ribs were perfectly cooked--but without flavor. Perhaps it was because there were only four of us in the restaurant--but it was a sad come-down.

Shun Lee West continues to be a spectacular restaurant. The food is always great and inventive. They have added a few new items to their classic menu — try the new Beijing Duck Egg Rolls, a brilliant re-consideration of traditional egg rolls. And the service is always great.

This is a great restuarant for large groups. The service was quick and the food delicious! There is something for everyone. The food is a bit pricey though.

My wife and I had off from work and went to movies followed by lunch at Shun Lee West

We both love dim sum.

We have been there before, but not since before COVID

It was great to be back!

They have seafood and vegetarian dim dum (and meat, although we don’t eat meat)

The dim sum are large, tasty and come quickly.

Highly recommended

The people at reception were late in seating us despite obvious disabilities, and were quite rude! It was very busy but that is no excuse for poor service and long delays. Cocktails were not good at all. However, the Beijing Duck was excellent!

This used to be a great Chinese restaurant in NYC. Went here for the first time in years. The restaurant still looks nice and was seated promptly. Everyone friendly. However, the service from that point was poor; couldn't find waiter when needed. The only person was a busboy continuously filling water glasses!

The food was inconsistent. Egg rolls greasy and tasteless. The main courses were OK. The shrimp dish was pretty good.

As usual, the bill was high! That's ok for an excellent experience, but for a mediocre meal, unacceptable. I won't be back.

I used to really like this restaurant. Unfortunately, post-pandemic it is not very good at all. The service — never a strong point — has gotten down right rude. The food is extremely mediocre. The dumplings used to be terrific; now, the dough is thick and chewy, as opposed to light and thin. The Beijing Duck, was disappointing as well and they no longer give you the legs. The only decent dish was the pork fried rice. The restaurant used to be a favorite, but unfortunately I’m sad to say this will be my last visit.

Based on reviews I knew what to expect. I would say it was slightly lower than expectations. I’ve heard plenty of reviews saying this place was once so great but has a run down feeling to it, and it’s true. Unfortunately my partner was not aware of these reviews and got very excited at the charming interior as we were seated, this set him up for disappointment as the food was nothing to write home about, and the service was lacking. The food I had expected to be middle of the road, wasn’t as bad as some take out Chinese places but definitely for from amazing as the better Chinese restaurants in the city. The service however was worse than expected. We sat at around 5:40 and I noticed immediately the plates and glasses were very visibly dirty. When our waiter finally came I let him know and he got us new glasses, and assured us the plates were just show plates. I still shouldn’t be able to swipe my finger over the show plates to create an art piece.
We weren’t able to get our orders in till 6. Most of our food came out in a timely manner but one dish had not arrived and it was already 6:30. By 6:40 we really needed to head out. We had very obviously stacked all of our dishes at the end of our booth and had been eyeing the waiters for about 10min, my partner had to get up to hunt down our water for the check and to take off the last dish that didn’t arrive. There were only 2 waiters for quite a large half of the room so I’m not sure if they were understaffed or one of them was still being trained as it looked like they were both helping the same table many times.
Over all I picked this place out of convenience as it’s right next to Lincoln center, and for the cuisine. If I’m ever looking for those two criteria again I might return but I don’t think I could ever drag my partner back here.

The food is vastly overpriced. The chicken was rubbery and not very tasty. There was not enough sauce for the rice. The service was rushed and inattentive. Not worth it. Not going back.

Dirty, tired, food was equal to basic Chinese take out. This was once an elegant and delicious experience. Something changed during the pandemic. They have kept it expensive but we were very disappointed. I hope they can bring it back to its previous reputation.

Shun Lee West is one of my favorite haunts of the upper west side. I was so excited to have it open again. Last night I was there and pleased to order my favorite appetizers: cold sesame noodles & fried vegetable dumplings. To my surprise the noodles were unpalatable. Completely inedible! The dumplings were not much better: soggy, rubbery, rancid. I could not be more disappointed. I cancelled the entre and left. $45 for the appetizers. I'm still in mourning. Perhaps this restaurant is not fully staffed in the kitchen or dining room, but service was abominable last night. A Sunday night, we had a 7 pm reservation and were seated quickly. Water, tea and a beer arrived quickly, but we waited about 70 minutes for scallion pancakes, soup and fried noodles to appear. The entrees then arrived before the soup was finished.

I was happy for the restaurant that it was filled, but not about the service. At this time, be sure to allow plenty of time if you go.

Disappointed with the service we received. The waiter rushed to take our order and discouraged us from our original choices because it would take too long. We had not indicated that we had a time constraint. Turns out we waited quite a while (compared with service at nearby tables) and neither our appetizers nor main dishes was hot when they reached our table. As a result, the quality of the food was not up to expectations.

Service was slack, food forgettable and sold at more than twice the price than at any reasonably good Chinese restaurant. One pays for the spacious setting and Lincoln Center location--and also for the brown rice served in absurdly small portions!
