Shun Lee West
For haute Chinese cuisine, it’s among New York City’s best. Regional offerings include crispy Grand Marnier prawns with honey walnuts (Canton), braised sea bass in hot bean sauce (Hunan) and shredded beef with leeks and hot peppers (Szechwan). Specialties include beggar’s chicken baked in lotus leaves and clay (requires one day’s notice), Hunan tripe, sweetbreads with black mushrooms and of course, Beijing Duck.
A young seasoned duckling slowly roasted until crispy and golden. The delicate skin is first sliced, then the meat is carved seperately. Served with homemade crepes, spring onion brushes and Hoinsin Sauce

My husband commented to me that he felt like he lost a good friend:(
We have been loyal customers for 20 + yrs…
During Covid we were relegated carry out which was very hit or miss however today we went in person. Being a retailer I was quite put off by the torn overhead sign which is a pet peeve for me and I was ready to abort at that point but my husband insisted on forging on-
The café is closed indefinitely, The dead plants outside and the inside empty tables are daunting.
We were greeted by the sole employee we saw who is masked and trying valiantly as far as I could see to care for the two other tables besides us that were there at lunchtime albeit on Monday.
The rose was a generous pour It was nice for $14 and properly chilled. The tea was tepid and weak.
We ordered two spring rolls which were great, Chan do chicken which was fine and Crispy XO prawns which were no resemblance to anything we ordered in the prior 20 years and more like bubba gump in Times Square. Butterflied, Heavily breaded and overly deep-fried.
They no longer serve green tea ice cream.
And the prices went up. Overall a very sad experience.
Excellent, fresh, great service, dependable for many years.
Peking Duck, pancakes, hoisin sauce, cucumbers and green onion, bean sprouts and spicy eggplant. Over and out.
Great food, great dragon sculpture
The Peking Duck is outstanding and reasonnably priced. It is also an experience. Highly recommendedeven if the wait is a bit long, a goodsign anyway!
Enjoyed the updated menu with the fish tacos. However, there could have been more fish offered. It consisted mainly of veggies.
Food not as interesting as on prior visits. Service poor - waiters brought food intended for another table.
Food was great; decor could use dry cleaning
Great food, service above board and the location for the midtown/west side area is great.
Lunch or dinner will work
Nice environment. Disliked the menu. Fits take away but not done in. Ordered starter and it came in seconds. The main course was the worst Chinese Food I ever had.
Will never come back.
Everything was very good except the prices are much too high. Don’t know if I will return.
Great service. Lovely and friendly restaurant. A bit pricey but generous portions.
Soup and dumplings were good but the two main dishes were just mediocre. The chicken in the chicken chow mein and steamed chicken w vegetables seemed like some sort of composite and not pieces of freshly cooked poultry: the first dish was flat and tasteless but the 2nd one was ok because of the spicy sauce. Service was attentive and atmosphere lovely- booth was very quiet. Prices have increased by at least $5 a dish compared to previously but the portions are substantial. Satisfaction may depend on what you order!
Returning customer--- excellent food, value above baord...
I keep returning...
Service was at a snail's pace. The order's were extremely slow out of kitcehn. Staff mostly inattentive. Place could have used a good scrub
One of my all time favorites for many years. Amazing flavors for all palates. Great service and ambiance.
Food and service was excellent.
Note: Clean the Men’s Room!!
One of our tried-and-trues. I’ve been going to Shun Lee West almost since it opened 40 years ago, when it was at the vanguard of fine Chinese dining. It never really moved forward but it’s still a delicious homage to ‘80s-style Szechuan food. The service is impeccable and the period decor still rules. A real UWS treasure! Long live Shun Lee!
Enjoyed our dinner -- Food was excellent as usual.
I can’t comment on the food but I can comment on the service because there was none and we didn’t stay because no one greeted us. The ambulance was very grim and it was dark in there and it was dirty. It was old and it needs to be updated
The food was excellent but I was surprised to have such inattentive service.
Usually Shun Lee has great service. Maybe they were understaffed
We have been going there for many years this was a horrible experience got seated on time and the rest goes down hill got our drinks took an hour to get our food then another hour to get our dinner and then another hour to clean the table ordered more drinks never got them until we were leaving them put them on our bill spoke to the maiterdeb and got nowhere would not recommend this restaurant could not ever reach our waiter when we left there were other people complaining would like something done about this
Soup dumpling were old and sad. Not a good start to a meal to say the least. The place is just tired, the food overpriced for basically delivery quality takeout.
So glad Shun Lee West opened back up. I was worried they’d close for good because of COVID. Their food is delicious and the service was excellent. Can’t wait to go back!
Service was good. Restaurant was quiet. Appetizers were very good
The phenomenons food was only exceeded be there very BEST SERVICE! Thank you, David, for helping us celebrate a very important occasion!
We have been to Shun Lee WEst at least 50 times over the best 30 years. The place was dirty when we walked in the carpets had not been vacuumed and looked dirty.
The food was mediocre not the high quality that we have had in the past.
The server was excellent we knew him from before and had him many times.
Giant shrimp and scallop, orange beef - both superb.
It pains me to say this after being a Shun Lee customer for a good fifty years, but the duck was not even close to the Peking Duck House. It was dry and tasteless. What a disappointment. The rest of the meal was very good. But the duck is the centerpiece of my meal.
Great food!! GreaT service!!
Wonderful Chinese food, beautiful room and excellent service. I have been going to this restaurant for about 30 years, but only when I feel I have the extra money to spend. It's worth it, but it is expensive! (About $100 per person when all is said and done.) Also, there used to be more duck entrees on the menu. (One I remember and liked was duck with walnuts.) Last night I only saw one duck entree on the menu. Would love to see Shun Lee bring the others back. Maybe once they fully ramp up. I wish them luck and hope they can remain in business.
Great food as always. Excellent martini. Excellent service.
We had excellent service. Our water had a great sense of humor and took good care of us. The food was delicious and
We were very comfortable and felt safe.
Great food, and friendly, attentive staff. They will accommodate food allergies and make dishes for you that are "off menu."
Lovely atmosphere for one of our first meals indoors since the before times. Food was great, prices were high, but worth it. Great service.
Not the classic it once was, but it will be again sometime soon.
Shun Lee West never disappoints! We ordered vegetable spring rolls, steamed shrimp dumplings (divine!), scallion pancakes, bean sprouts with scallions and sautéed prawns with vegetables and a very spicy hot sauce. I am always impressed with the quality of their prawns. And the waiters even managed a happy birthday celebration with pineapple and lychee nuts, even though their dessert menu has not returned quite yet. A lovely evening and memorable meal!
Love the vibe and food Lobster in Black Bean Sauce is my fave
Shun Lee always is reliable. Its food is high quality, great ambiance and fine service.
Service attentive. Did not feel rushed to finish one course before next served. Quality of starters and main dishes as good as remembered. Without theatre crowd it was possible to have a conversation at table.
