We'd been in Japan for a week and had already had some outstanding dining experiences, but this topped them all. Booked it for a friend's birthday, based on its TripAdvisor standing and couldn't have been a better choice. The staff were outrageously nice and friendly, and the food is outstanding. They give you a little bit of history, without being in an way tacky. Absolutely recommend in Kyoto, but make sure you book - like most in Japan it's not big, and was full on a Thursday night.

My fiance and I went to Shishin for my birthday as it was recommended by a friend. It was an awesome dinner with an incredibly friendly staff that provided excellent service. The food was some of the best we had during our stay in Japan and we really appreciated the time the owner took with us to explain some of their philosophy as a restaurant, as well as, discuss some of the history behind Samurai. I would recommend this place to everyone!

Nice decor and decent food. OK for tourists too shy to venture into authentic local joints. Quite pricey.

The ethos that this place has is amazing. It was our first meal in Kyoto and we had to grab a taxi on a rainy night. The warm, cosy interior offered great respite. Both the hospitality and the food surpassed my expectations.

For an interesting Samurai themed dinner, look no further than Shishin. Located a short walk away from the nearest station, we found it easy to locate with Apple Maps. :) the owner was warm and kind enough to share his interesting anecdotes with us and even allowed us the chance up close with samurai armor and shuriken. The food is amazing value and was delicious but definitely not out shining the service at the restaurant. Thank you for the wonderful dinner!

Although there was one set of samurai armor and some recipes that reportedly dated to samurai times, we expected more samurai ambience. The food was good but not really special. Although online comments indicated the prices would be relatively inexpensive, we thought the prices were high for what we received, in comparison to other restaurants with similar quality/quantity food we visited in Japan.

My husband and I were in Kyoto while travelling around Japan on our honeymoon and I had read about Shishin Samurai Restaurant on Tripadvisor so I booked through opentable and messaged asking if it would be possible for my husband to be able to try on some of the samurai items when there as it is an interest of his. We arrived, were greeted by a very nice gentleman in samurai attire who showed us to our table in a traditional Japanese style room with a samurai theme. My husband had a sake and a beer and I had 2 honey plum wines (which were amazing). My husband had the samurai burger which he couldn't finish, it was so big and he said delicious and I had the beef and vegetable stew which I also couldn't finish but was also amazing and I would recommend also!! We had been given two appetizers before our food which were lovely and after the meal the samurai let my husband try on a samurai jacket and hat and hold a samurai sword while I took a few photographs, my husband was so chuffed. He also brought out a dessert with 2 candles for us to blow out as a celebration of our marriage which was an incredibly lovely touch. He had told us some samurai facts during the meal also and to be honest in all this was the best dining experience we had while in Japan and it cost less than £50. I cannot recommend this place enough. If we are back in Kyoto, we will be booking to go! Thanks so much Shishin, from Vera & Graham :)

This restaurant not only serves great food but is a traditional Japanese, cultural experience. The owner speaks great English and is all about making your dining at his restaurant memorable. The ambiance is all Samurai - and very much a historical learning encounter. Highly recommend!
